1:33I was in New York I was shooting the
1:34crow crowded
1:36room and I was having a really hard time
1:38with the job just because of how taxing
1:40it was and I decided to delete my
1:43Instagram because I just felt like I was
1:45so addicted to this kind of false
1:47version of my life that it was just
1:49taking over I would be on set working
1:51I'd come and sit in my chair and just
1:53scroll scroll scroll scroll scroll and
1:54it was it was becoming a problem I was
1:57just obsessed with it and I was obsessed
1:59to find out what people were saying and
2:01how people what they thought about me so
2:04I decided to make an announcement and
2:06say that I'm taking a break from social
2:08media and the thing that really upset me
2:10is the Press ran with that and they
2:12tried to make out that I was having this
2:15mental breakdown and what upset me was
2:18if I was having a mental breakdown
2:20that's not for you to report
2:22[Music]
2:25on all right now let's break down the
2:27clip and learn all the advanced
2:29vocabulary in pronunciation with Tom
2:31Holland I was in New York I was shooting
2:33the crown crowded room in this context
2:36shooting means filming the crowded room
2:39we should mention here is a
2:41psychological Thriller TV series where
2:43Tom is the protagonist so he says he was
2:46having a hard time filming it meaning he
2:48was struggling it was a difficult moment
2:50for him that's a nice casual location
2:53you can use too theyes say it all the
2:55time check this out our family doesn't
2:58run from things miles
3:01yeah I
3:05know what's that about he's having a
3:07hard time Jeff and I was having a really
3:10hard time with the job just because of
3:12how taxing it was the emotional that's
3:14also what he meant by saying it was
3:16taxing it was difficult exhausting and
3:19drained his energy in Tom's case playing
3:22this intense role in this series was
3:25emotionally taxing I decided to delete
3:27my Instagram because I just felt like I
3:29was so addicted to this kind of false
3:32version of my life that it was just
3:33taking over when something takes over it
3:36takes control Tom means Instagram was
3:39taking control of his life of his
3:41thoughts and actions and it was hard to
3:42focus on his job see how he describes
3:45what he would do I would be on set
3:46working I'd come and sit in my chair and
3:48just scroll scroll scroll scroll scroll
3:50and it was this action is called
3:52scrolling it's a common expression
3:54nowadays but you should know this
3:55particular use of the verb to scroll
3:58already existed before smartphone since
4:00we also scroll on a computer using a
4:02mouse another expression that people use
4:05these days to refer to this specific
4:07negative experience of scroll scroll
4:10scroll when you're using Instagram or
4:12Tik Tok is Doom scrolling I was just
4:15obsessed with it and I was obsessed to
4:17find out what people were saying and how
4:18people what they thought about me did
4:20you notice how Tom pronounces the words
4:22that end with a t- sound let's give a
4:24listen to this part again but more
4:25slowly and I was obsessed to find out
4:29what people were saying all these words
4:31were pronounced with a stop T out what
4:36thought about natives often do this now
4:40to do a stop T sound you simply prepare
4:43to make a t- sound but then you stop the
4:45flow of air and make a short pause now
4:48try to repeat after me out what
4:53about now what else can we find here
4:56that's more advanced pronunciation well
4:58these phrases have some connected speech
5:00in them that's when natives cut link and
5:03morph fors together when they speak the
5:06word obsessed ends with a T sound
5:08obsessed and because the next word
5:11starts with a T they morph obsessed not
5:15obsessed to but obsessed to and a D from
5:19find gets linked to the vowel sound from
5:21the next word find out now let's try to
5:25repeat after a time and I was obsessed
5:27to find out what people were saying and
5:29I was obsessed to find out what people
5:32were
5:37saying and say like I'm taking a break
5:39from social media because I feel like my
5:40mental health will benefit from it and
5:43the thing that really upset me is the
5:44Press ran with that and they tried to
5:47make out that I was having this mental
5:49breakdown to run with something is a
5:52collocation that means to take an idea
5:53and develop it further without
5:55hesitation it can be used in both
5:58negative and positive context text for
6:01example a more positive situation could
6:03be she had a great idea for the project
6:05and the team ran with it meaning they
6:08developed and expanded on the idea in
6:10this case Tom is saying that the press
6:12that is magazines newspapers TV news Etc
6:16they took the story which was pretty
6:18straightforward and they changed the
6:20narrative and that's what he means by
6:22this line and they try to make out that
6:25I was having this mental breakdown in
6:28this context to make out refers to
6:30creating a certain impression or to
6:32pretend for example she's trying to make
6:34out that she's Rich so instead of
6:37focusing on the positive reason behind
6:39his decision the Press made it sound
6:41like he was having a mental breakdown a
6:44point where a person gets so stressed
6:46because of their thoughts and emotions
6:48that they collapse they stop functioning
6:50properly like when a machine breaks down
6:53and Tom was upset with the news because
6:55he was actually taking steps to avoid
6:58reaching that point of breakdown
7:00and by the way remember that you can
7:02practice all this vocabulary that you're
7:04seeing today on our own app I highly
7:06recommend you try it it's the best way
7:08for you to never forget all these words
7:10and expressions that you've been
7:11learning with these lessons in fact I
7:13find it even better to watch it from
7:15there from the app because you get a way
7:17more powerful experience just click the
7:19link in the description below to start
7:21now you'll be taken directly to this
7:23lesson over there or you can simply
7:25search for real life English on Google
7:27Play or the App Store and I hope to see
7:29you
7:33there they they took the story in the
7:36wrong direction and they Tred they
7:37painted again this negative light on
7:40Mental Health rather than saying oh he's
7:43doing it it's okay that he's doing it so
7:45we should all feel okay to do it too
7:47they were saying oh look he's not the
7:49perfect happy go-lucky kid you think he
7:51is he's having a nervous breakdown in
7:52New York and I think that that was a
7:54really unfair line of Journalism let's
7:58say yeah yeah yeah absolutely absolutely
8:00it almost sounds like you were actually
8:03preemptively going I'm doing this so
8:06that I don't right go in that direction
8:09totally at least I'm not trying to put
8:10words in your mouth but abely it's
8:12almost like I'm proactively seeing that
8:14I could end up in a position where sure
8:16I might have a breakdown I don't want to
8:17be in that position and so I'm
8:18responsibly saying guys I'm taking a
8:21break in order to protect myself 100%
8:24yeah which makes a lot of sense and
8:25actually is quite admirable again
8:30now before we continue if you are new to
8:32this YouTube channel you should know
8:34that every single week we make new
8:35lessons like this one with your favorite
8:37movies interviews and celebrities to
8:39help you understand fast speaking
8:41natives without getting lost without
8:43missing the jokes and without subtitles
8:45so hit the Subscribe button and the bell
8:47down below if you don't want to miss any
8:49of our new lessons they they took the
8:51story in the wrong direction and they
8:53try they painted again this negative
8:55light on Mental Health to paint
8:57something negatively means describe or
9:00show something in a bad way it's very
9:02similar to try to make out something
9:04about a situation to paint it a certain
9:07way and he goes on to use yet another
9:09similar phrase check it out they they
9:11took the story in the wrong direction
9:13and they try they painted again this
9:16negative light on Mental Health to show
9:18someone in a bad light or negative light
9:21as he says is exactly what he's talking
9:23about and by the way you may also hear
9:25the opposite phrase in a good light they
9:28were saying oh look he's not the perfect
9:31happy go-lucky kid you think he is he's
9:32having a nervous breakdown in New York
9:35and I think that that was a really
9:37unfair line of Journalism if you call
9:40someone happy gol lucky you mean they
9:42are not concerned about the future and
9:44just enjoy life without planning Tom
9:47felt this way or method of doing
9:49journalism or as he says this line of
9:52Journalism was unfair yeah yeah
9:56absolutely absolutely it almost sounds
9:57like you were actually
10:00preemptively going I'm doing this so
10:02that I don't go in that direction if you
10:05act preemptively in a situation you're
10:08thinking ahead and doing something in
10:09advance to avoid problems for example
10:12packing the night before a trip helps
10:14you avoid rushing things in the morning
10:17you're acting preemptively in case
10:19something expected happens you have time
10:21to deal with it in a strategic context
10:24like in the military a preemptive strike
10:26is an attack launched to prevent an
10:28expected attack from the
10:31enemy how old are you Dan How old uh I'm
10:3532 you having some kind of preemptive
10:38midlife crisis oh this mom he rides a
10:41motorbike I'll take you for a ride in it
10:43sometimes you yeah yeah absolutely
10:45absolutely it almost sounds like you
10:46were actually
10:48preemptively going I'm doing this so
10:51that I don't go in that direction
10:54totally at least I'm not trying to put
10:55words in your mouth but absolutely
10:57putting words in one's mouth refers is
10:59saying that someone means one thing when
11:01the person really meant something else
11:04imagine two people having an argument
11:06you could hear something like I didn't
11:08say this don't try to put words in my
11:10mouth in this case J shett is just being
11:13respectful saying he knows Tom didn't
11:15say those words exactly but that that's
11:17what he understands from Tom's story
11:20it's almost like I'm proactively seeing
11:22that I could end up in a position where
11:23sure I might have a breakdown I don't
11:25want to be in that position and so I'm
11:26responsibly saying guys I'm taking a
11:29break
11:29in to protect myself another word we use
11:32to talk about taking action early is
11:36proactively like exercising regularly is
11:39a proactive way to maintain good health
11:41instead of just waiting until you get
11:42sick to go to the doctor it's almost
11:45like I'm proactively seeing that I could
11:47end up in a position where sure I might
11:49have a breakdown I don't want to be in
11:50that position and so I'm responsibly
11:52saying guys I'm taking a break in order
11:54to protect myself to end up means to
11:57eventually find yourself in a c certain
11:59situation often without planning it for
12:02example the movie we wanted to see was
12:04sold out there were no tickets available
12:06so we ended up seeing a different one
12:09all right I know you've been waiting for
12:10this part now we're going to test your
12:12comprehension by watching the entire
12:14clip a final time without subtitles and
12:17I'm going to ask you some quiz questions
12:19let's do
12:22[Music]
12:24this I was in New York I was shooting
12:27the crown crowded room
12:29and I was having a really hard time with
12:31the job just because of how taxing it
12:33was which word describes something that
12:35is physically or mentally difficult and
12:38exhausting shooting tasking
12:50taxing I decided to delete my Instagram
12:53because I just felt like I was so
12:55addicted to this kind of false version
12:57of my life that it was just taking over
12:59I would be on set working I'd come and
13:01sit in my chair and just scroll scroll
13:03scroll scroll scroll and it was it was
13:05becoming a problem I was just obsessed
13:07with it and I was obsessed to find out
13:09what people were saying and how people
13:11what they thought about me so I decided
13:13to make an announcement and say that I'm
13:16taking a break from social media and the
13:18thing that really upset me is the Press
13:19ran with that and they tried to make out
13:22that I was having this mental breakdown
13:25and what upset me was if I was having a
13:28mental breakdown that's not for you to
13:30report on what does the phrase run with
13:32it mean to run as fast as
13:36possible to accept an idea and develop
13:38it further to ignore instructions and do
13:41your own
13:43[Music]
13:50thing and they tried to make out that I
13:53was having this mental breakdown and
13:56what upset me was if I was having a Al
13:59breakdown that's not for you to report
14:01on they they they took the story in the
14:03wrong direction and they try they
14:04painted again this negative light on
14:07Mental Health rather than saying oh he's
14:10doing it it's okay that he's doing it so
14:12we should all feel okay to do it too
14:14they were saying oh look do you remember
14:16the phrase Tom use here meaning to make
14:19someone look bad
14:21[Music]
14:27[Music]
14:30to paint any bed
14:32light yeah yeah absolutely absolutely it
14:35almost sounds like you were actually
14:38preemptively going I'm doing this so
14:41that I don't go in that direction
14:43totally at least I'm not trying to put
14:45words in your mouth but absolutely it's
14:47almost like I'm proactively seeing that
14:49I could end up in a position where sure
14:51I might have a breakdown I don't want to
14:52be in that position and so I'm
14:53responsibly saying guys I'm taking a
14:55break in order to protect myself 100%
14:59which makes a lot of sense and actually
15:00is quite admirable again which of these
15:02actions is an example of a preemptive
15:04one putting on sunscreen when at the
15:07beach fixing a leak in your house
15:11apologizing after hurting someone's
15:19[Music]
15:22feelings all right guys great job now
