0:01hi ambitious professionals I'm tinga
0:02beros career strategist speaker and
0:04coach and I guide people like you to
0:07your version of professional success
0:09Financial stability and personal
0:11fulfillment if you're watching this
0:12video that means you've already got a
0:14great start to that by joining the
0:16Carpenters pre-apprentice program in
0:18today's video I'm going to give you a
0:20crash course in resume writing and why
0:23keeping up with your resume throughout
0:24the carpentry career will give you a
0:26competitive advantage on the screen
0:28you're looking at two different resume
0:30templates that you can use as a starting
0:32point or you can create your own let me
0:34go ahead and zoom in so we can focus on
0:39one resume at a
0:42time so um on Microsoft Word there is a
0:47ribbon up here where you can modify the
0:49document so you can see you can insert
0:55things you can play with the design the
0:58layout all sorts of different things so
1:01let's start right here in layouts you
1:02can change the margin right now I have
1:05the margins in
1:06moderate um but you could also change it
1:10to normal or um or a custom it is
1:15important to have a lot of white space
1:17on a resume because you do want to be
1:19able to briefly skim the resume so that
1:22way you can either the hiring manager
1:25can determine if you have the skills
1:26they want or not so I really like
1:28moderate because that will give you a
1:31good foundation to altering your resume
1:34as you go along throughout your career
1:36so one thing that is really really
1:40important is to have your contact
1:43information so up at the top you always
1:45want to put your contact information I
1:47know that sounds obvious but you will
1:49not believe out of the thousands and
1:52thousands of resumés that I have
1:54reviewed how many people forget to put
1:56their contact information so lots of
1:59ways to do that you can have your first
2:01and last name um centered or flushed to
2:04the left I don't recommend it being
2:07flushed to the right so if you go back
2:09to the ribbon and push home right here
2:12in this paragraph you can change the
2:14alignment by clicking on these things so
2:19um according to ey tracking studies
2:21people
2:22read um in the EF format from left to
2:26right in um American culture so that
2:29means when someone 's reading they're
2:30going to start at the top and work their
2:32way over to the right and down and to
2:35the right and down and as they get
2:37further down the page if it's someone
2:40who reads in the E format they'll go all
2:42the way over but if it's somebody who
2:43reads in the F format they're going to
2:45stop at the bottom um without even
2:48looking to the right so that's why you
2:50want to have the most important
2:51information at the very top of your
2:53resume and the less important
2:55information down at the bottom of your
2:56resume so the most important information
2:59is is going to be how can they reach you
3:01if you want to get an interview which is
3:03the goal of your resume then you want to
3:07have your contact information so if you
3:10have an easy first name first and last
3:13name you may decide to um keep it the
3:18font like this or you may decide that
3:22you want to sorry I'm pull my screen up
3:25let
3:27me I'm working on multiple monitor so I
3:30want to make sure you can see this
3:32clearly so let me zoom in more you can
3:34actually come up here into the font and
3:37change the case to all
3:39uppercase if you have an easy to read
3:42name but if you have a um a complicated
3:46name you may not want to have all
3:47uppercase because then it looks pretty
3:50busy if it's all uppercase now if you
3:53have a very common name you also may
3:55want to add a middle initial just kind
3:57of depends on what your situation is
3:59always want to put your phone number for
4:02those of you who change your phone
4:03numbers often if you're serious about
4:05having a career you want to stop that so
4:08whatever the reason it is that you
4:09change your number often you want to try
4:12to stick with the same number because
4:14somebody's going to get your resume and
4:16then try to reach you and then you're
4:17not going to be able to be reached same
4:19thing with email address you want to
4:21give an email address that they can
4:23actually find you at um so if you don't
4:26check your email address often then
4:29maybe create one that you will actually
4:32check or if you know that you're going
4:34to be losing an email address don't use
4:36that email address so maybe if right now
4:38you have an email address from a school
4:41or through a job don't use that one use
4:43your personal email that you'll actually
4:45use but make sure that email address is
4:47professional and then you want to have
4:49your contact information on here so you
4:51know the
4:52carpentry um Union is in Elk Grove well
4:56a lot of you at this program are from
4:58the Chicagoland area
5:00so um you want to make sure that you
5:03have your address on here your ZIP code
5:04on here although it's important for you
5:06to have your driver's license and have a
5:08car for transportation so you can get to
5:10and from your apprenticeship program um
5:13public transportation is an option and
5:16um and then in regards to Future jobs
5:20down the road it is important for
5:22employers to know okay well how far are
5:24you because being on time is important
5:26and I don't mean showing up on time I
5:28mean actually being able to to get there
5:30early get set up for work um and not be
5:33costing your employer money now although
5:37a lot of companies um and the union
5:40probably you know you don't really need
5:42a LinkedIn URL if right now if I Google
5:46your name and Tik Tock comes up or an
5:51inappropriate um Twitter comes up or
5:55Instagram or whatever it may be that is
5:57less than professional I would encourage
6:00you to create a LinkedIn profile so when
6:02somebody instead of somebody having to
6:04Google you they can click right here on
6:06your LinkedIn URL and go directly to a
6:10professional social media site where you
6:13can be highlighting your Prof
6:15professional side to you versus your
6:18personal side to you so if you don't
6:20have a LinkedIn right now that's okay
6:22but I do encourage you to make one so
6:24that way when someone is doing research
6:26on you you are controlling where they do
6:28the research at in an ideal situation
6:32now um if your goal is to get into the
6:36Carpenters apprenticeship program you
6:38can put right here Carpenters Apprentice
6:40or you can put seeking um Carpenters
6:43Apprentice program or what whatever it
6:45may be but you want to make it clear
6:48what it is that you're looking to do so
6:50an easy way to do that is by putting the
6:52job title right there now immediately
6:55after the job title you can either put
6:57keywords or you can put a tagline or you
7:00can even have two to three
7:03sentences on why it is that you're
7:06looking um to get into the job that you
7:08h u are looking to get into or you know
7:12what makes you better than the next
7:14candidate or whatever that you think
7:17that the employer is going to want to
7:19know about you remember um the goal of a
7:22resume is to get an interview and the
7:25interviewer doesn't care what you want
7:27the interviewer cares what you have to
7:29offer so um that's why I recommend doing
7:33something like this versus having an
7:35objective statement because objective
7:37statements are about what you want
7:39versus what you can do for the employer
7:40and at the end of the day the employer
7:42cares are you going to make them money
7:45or not can you do what they need or can
7:49you not so having a brief something like
7:53this up here um is a great way to keep
7:56the reader interested the average person
7:58looks at a resume me for 7.4 seconds so
8:02you have on average about 6 seconds to
8:05impress the person or not whether they
8:07want to take a look at you or not so you
8:09want to immediately show your value
8:11that's why having some bullet points at
8:13the top make it um is an easy way to
8:17make you appealing so you got your
8:20pre-apprentice certificate you've got
8:22your green awareness um certification
8:24you got your um OSHA 30 C uh
8:27certification so you can have
8:29certifications right up at the top or
8:31you could even have a very brief
8:34statement on what you've done so say you
8:37go through the Carpenters Apprentice
8:38program and now you're looking to become
8:40a journeyman so you would want to change
8:42this job title up here you might change
8:45this tagline right here and you might in
8:48add in examples of previous work some of
8:50your accomplishments so right now um at
8:54at in your pre-apprentice program your
8:56accomplishments are getting your
8:57certifications but once you start
8:59getting some work experience underneath
9:01your belt your accomplishments will be
9:03geared towards what you've done in your
9:06career now another easy way to quickly
9:09show you have the experience that
9:11they're looking for is having a core
9:13competencies or a skills um section now
9:18in trades it's not as important to have
9:22um applicant tracking
9:24system compatible resumés but basically
9:28in in in other Industries there's
9:31software called ATS applicant tracking
9:33systems that scans rumes for left and
9:35right looking for keywords and phrases
9:37to then rank the resume and upload your
9:40resume into the organization's um
9:43database now depending on you know where
9:47you end up working your resume may need
9:49to be ATS compatible so instead of um
9:54using a table because atss can't read
9:57tables all you have to do is type words
10:00and then use the space bar so type type
10:02type space space space and then Center
10:05it yourself on the next resume I'm going
10:07to show you a different example on how
10:09to do this but this is one way and you
10:11can swap these out let's say you know
10:14you're going for a solar panel job then
10:17maybe you need then maybe you would
10:18delete Drilling and Framing and put in
10:20something about solar um panels so all
10:23of these things you're going to swap out
10:26and change depending on what job it is
10:29that you're looking to get hired for so
10:31I added a couple of things right so when
10:33you're going into the Carpenters
10:34Apprentice program you you know they're
10:37there because you completed the
10:39pre-apprentice certificate you're going
10:40to have some car uh General carpentry
10:42knowledge you have you know the safety
10:45because you have that OSHA 30 you ha um
10:47you're going to have to pass a working
10:49math test so having that on your resume
10:52just makes sense and some other things
10:54that you're going to be learning in your
10:55tray I added but you may want to swap
10:58some of these out based on what you feel
10:59was the most important things that you
11:01got out of your
11:02trade so then coming down on a resume
11:06traditionally is um your experience
11:08section now you may have never had a job
11:12in carpentry but what you did at Paul
11:15Simon um you can put as relevant
11:17experience and then you can put your
11:19like work experience down here as
11:21additional experience
11:23so let's go ahead and um look at your
11:28relev experience so pre uh Carpenters
11:32pre-apprentice
11:33so that so you did this at Paul Simon
11:37this was your job title you are a
11:39Carpenters pre-apprentice student and
11:41then a couple of bullet points so um
11:45human beings are hardwired
11:47to uh relate to stories so you want your
11:51resume to flow in a story format this is
11:55what you're looking for this is who you
11:57are this is what you have to offer these
12:00are some of the skills that you have um
12:02to back up these certifications and this
12:05is your relevant experience so same
12:08thing when you get down to these bullet
12:09points you want to do it in a similar
12:12format now there's the star method the
12:15SAR method the car method the tar meth
12:18there's so many different methods on how
12:19to do these bullet points but basically
12:21this is the thing have the first bullet
12:23point B what you did what was your scope
12:25what was your responsibility what were
12:27you doing so you successfully completed
12:29the Chicago Regional Council of
12:31Carpenters pre-apprentice program you
12:33received eight months of Hands-On
12:34training now maybe for you was 12 months
12:36maybe for you you know it was nine
12:38months whatever it may be this is just a
12:40template that you can alter based on
12:43your experience but so this is what you
12:45did now if you go into The Apprentice
12:48program then you're going to say that
12:49you successfully completed you know
12:51their Apprentice program and you
12:53received four years of um Hands-On you
12:57know Hands-On training and uh classroom
13:00education and then so for the
13:02pre-apprentice you utilize power tools
13:05and completed projects around Center and
13:07then you can list the types of tools you
13:09you used and learned how to use you are
13:12going to be doing different projects on
13:14Center so say what type of project you
13:16did and then give details on the project
13:18that you worked on so maybe you framed
13:22the guard shack maybe you completed
13:26repairs um to drywall in the dorms maybe
13:31you worked on the roofing project based
13:34on what you worked on you're going to
13:35have um however many bullet points you
13:38need I don't recommend having more than
13:39seven bullet points in any experience
13:42section but add some examples of how you
13:45did it
13:46because facts are great but when you can
13:50tell a story about that fact it's more
13:52meaningful so you can say you assisted
13:56you know with the job course Welcome
13:58Center project so um or maybe you did
14:03the guard shack or whatever type of
14:05project it was when you explain your
14:07part in the project you did the framing
14:09you did the demolition you did the
14:11whatever it may be that that that that
14:16that additional details of your piece of
14:18the project backs up that you have those
14:21skills you're saying that you got so
14:24with relevant
14:26experience when you uh um you know get
14:30into your Apprentice program that's when
14:34you might call of
14:36this um you know professional experience
14:39or something else but right now re
14:41relevant experience is fine but in the
14:43future you may note that you might want
14:45to change this to professional
14:46experience but right now this is a
14:48pretty decent spot for your
14:51resume but you also if you've ever held
14:53a job before you want to have that
14:55additional experience maybe you worked
14:57at McDonald's and it has has nothing to
14:59do with carpentry but think about the
15:01things that you did while you were at
15:03McDonald's and how that could be related
15:06what transferable skills did you learn
15:08at
15:09McDonald's um that can be transferred
15:12over to the union carpentry program so
15:18maybe you maintain and sanitized
15:20equipment per safety and health
15:22requirements well you know safety is
15:24really important in carpentry so adding
15:26something about safety I mean every job
15:28safety is important so regardless of
15:31where you worked safety is probably one
15:33of them um monitored and tracked the
15:37order schedule andhere to quality
15:39standards so maybe you're the one back
15:40there that makes you know the burgers or
15:42maybe you're the one back there that
15:44does the fry station whatever it may be
15:47you have to um stay on schedule and you
15:51have to have a certain quality to your
15:53work and that's the same thing in
15:55carpentry so finding ways to make your
15:58bullet points for um your previous
16:01experience like your additional
16:02experience the stuff that's not related
16:04to carpentry to try to find a way to
16:06make it related to carpentry is an art
16:09if that's something that you're
16:10struggling with then I will absolutely
16:13help you figure out how to word that but
16:16that's something that you want to get
16:17into the habit of figuring out how do
16:20you say I used to do this and it and I
16:23and it relates to what I want to do now
16:26that is going to help you go really far
16:29um in your professional career and then
16:33a lot of times new graduates put their
16:36education at the top but because I
16:40wanted to have this listed as relevant
16:43experience so you can kind of elaborate
16:44on the projects that you did while at
16:46Paul assignment I put your education and
16:49certifications down at the bottom and as
16:51you go along in your career education
16:53and certifications will automatically
16:55default to the bottom of your resume so
16:58Carpenter pre-apprentice you you know
17:00you got that from the Chicago Regional
17:02Council of Carpenters you see I don't
17:03have a date on here um as you progress
17:06in your career dates aren't necessary in
17:10terms of education and C uh
17:13certifications
17:15um they can either date them or you know
17:19then they can make it look like you have
17:20no experience so I just left dates off
17:23to kind of help you set you up for
17:25success for your resume as you move
17:27forward since if you complete this
17:29pre-apprentice program that
17:31automatically grandfathers You Into The
17:33Apprentice program so you got your green
17:36awareness certification your OSHA you
17:39should be doing OSHA
17:4130 um and say you got your high school
17:43equivalency from pen Foster maybe it was
17:45your GED maybe it was your high school
17:48diploma maybe if you didn't get your
17:50high school diploma from Penn State you
17:52want to um pen pen Foster you want to
17:54put where you got that high school
17:55diploma from so maybe it was CPS
17:59whatever it may be you want to have that
18:00information there so basically the
18:02format um when you're editing this
18:05document you want to keep the format
18:06consistent so this um is the education
18:11or certification and then the second
18:13part is where you got it from so as long
18:15as you're remaining consistent with
18:17formatting it'll keep the document um
18:20smooth so this is the second example now
18:23you see this one's a little bit
18:25different I've got your contact
18:27information
18:29both to the left and to the right and
18:32the reason why I did this is because
18:34visually I wanted this part right here
18:37to stand out so your name is bolded and
18:40you see it's in significantly larger
18:42font and this font type is actually
18:44different this is called a sandera font
18:48both of these fonts are sand Sera font
18:50that means they don't have the ticks
18:52like Times New Roman that's a um a sand
18:56spot and you have those ticks it's a
18:58more traditional old school font the
19:00reason why um sansera font is
19:04recommended is because they don't have
19:07those ticks which makes it easier to
19:08read on the computer at the end of the
19:11day you what font you choose isn't going
19:14to get you or not get you the job but I
19:16always stick to just a traditional easy
19:19to read font um I always recommend that
19:22you have your name larger than your
19:24other information you can have your
19:26contact information smaller um than
19:29other areas of your resume and this all
19:33of this is is
19:35a
19:37um is a borders and shadings box so when
19:41you if you want to add some color to
19:43your resume you see on this first resume
19:46I just made your name and the job title
19:48dark blue but if you wanted to add um
19:52some color to your resume I would
19:54recommend sticking to Grays or Blues um
19:57in carpentry because the union is a
20:01little stuffier than some other
20:03Industries so all you have to do is go
20:06to the paragraph section
20:08under um borders and
20:13shadings and give it a second okay so
20:17this box pops up so if you want to have
20:19a box around the information a shadow
20:22make it look
20:243D um you have a page border if you
20:27wanted some shading so I did here was um
20:30pick a color and then apply it to the
20:32paragraph so it goes all the way from
20:34left to right so that's how I got that
20:36little box around there exit and the Box
20:40around here all I did for this gray box
20:43was do the same thing except made it
20:45gray so again what job title do you want
20:48now this one I did it a little bit
20:50different this is what your trade
20:51instructor told me when I asked him hey
20:54so kind of explain what you do here and
20:57he said that one one of um the things
21:01that he likes to see in a student is
21:04that there are no problems only
21:05solutions so instead of complaining
21:08about something you're the type of um
21:11student who figures things out so maybe
21:13you add a tagline like that maybe you
21:15come up with a tagline in trade or you
21:18heard your trade instructor say
21:19something that really stood out and
21:21really resonated with you
21:24this type of formatting up here is
21:27called a professional brand
21:29a personal brand what type of
21:32professional are you this is what this
21:36student profession uh professional brand
21:38is there are no problems only solutions
21:41Problem Solver team player safety
21:43conscious eager to learn now these key
21:46words are going to say a lot about who
21:49whoever this person is now I don't think
21:52that you should lie on a resume so if
21:55you're not eager to learn then don't put
21:57that but then really don't be in this
21:59trade and um these are things that every
22:03single employer is going to want to have
22:06about um taking on an
22:08apprentice now same recommendation for
22:11the next section is having those bullet
22:14points you want to make it easy for
22:17somebody to read back in the day they
22:20used to use objective statements I
22:21talked to you about that last example
22:23more recently they use summary
22:25statements but the problem with summary
22:27statements is are when you're trying to
22:29read a a paragraph with like six to
22:32seven sentences people skip right over
22:35it because people don't want to read
22:37they just want to be able to skim and
22:38get the information they need so if you
22:40create bullet points to say what your
22:43accomplishments are it's going to be a
22:45lot easier for the person to get through
22:47your resume and they're going to have a
22:49better experience when looking at your
22:51resume and they have a better first
22:53impression of you so successfully
22:56completed the Carpenters pre-apprentice
22:57program acquired green awareness UBC
23:00certification trained in and past OSHA
23:0330 safety so I elaborated a little bit
23:08more from the first example and that's
23:12okay there's no right or wrong way to um
23:14write a resume there's just
23:15recommendations based on current best
23:17practices and Industry Trends so when
23:21you get down the road in your career
23:23this is where you're going to have
23:24success stories about things that you've
23:25done in your career but right now this
23:27is what you have going on on now in this
23:29first one you see how I've got the
23:32skills section they're all spaced out
23:35well down here you can fit a lot more
23:37skills in if you Bunch them together
23:40except when you Bunch them together it's
23:42a little harder to read but you can kind
23:44of skim through and see you either have
23:47those things or you don't now again
23:49these are things that you're going to
23:50tweak you're going to change these
23:51things as you go along in your career so
23:54right now it's really important that you
23:56have a valid driver's license to get
23:58into the Apprentice program and right
24:00now it's going to be really important
24:01that you have working math but down the
24:03road those types of things are just
24:05going to be expected and you might want
24:07to have um different skills or core
24:11competencies that you want to list to
24:13make sure that you're highlighting that
24:15so the way I got these little square
24:18boxes in is by going to
24:20insert
24:22symbol and then you can pick the symbol
24:24to have that um small um black Square in
24:28between you can also use the line so
24:31above the enter key if you press shift
24:34and that line I forget what this is
24:36called you can also break up words like
24:38that and that's what I did up here to
24:41break apart your email from your
24:44LinkedIn URL now if you don't have a
24:46LinkedIn URL you just delete this and
24:49space your email all the way over um by
24:52by using the space bar on your
24:55keyboard um but that's another option as
24:57well so here relevant experience I did
25:00the same thing breaking up your relevant
25:02experience and your additional
25:03experience on this one um ex and then
25:07have your education down here so instead
25:11of having the certifications listed down
25:14here I just put your certifications up
25:16here without relisting it again but as
25:18you go along in your career you're
25:19definitely going to want to add a
25:21certifications box because when you get
25:23into the apprentic program what's going
25:25to make you stand out between the next
25:27person are those add additional classes
25:29that you can take so when you get into
25:32your program there's going to be some
25:35different things that you can um take so
25:40right now um you know solar power that's
25:45important that that's an additional
25:47class that you can take in the
25:48apprenticeship program uh Timber framing
25:51that's an additional class that you can
25:53take so in addition to saying that
25:57you're in the Apprentice the four-year
25:59apprenticeship program where you have um
26:03you know like the the field work and
26:05then the weeks of school to make you
26:08stand out from the next person is by
26:10taking those additional classes and when
26:12you do you want to add those things onto
26:14your resume so every single time you get
26:16more training you want to add it on to
26:18your core competencies you want to add
26:19it on to your relevant experience you
26:21want to add it in to your education and
26:23certification because every single time
26:25you complete one of those classes you
26:26get a certificate in it saying that
26:28certified in that type of work so two
26:31different ways to create resumés um for
26:37getting into your apprenticeship and
26:40continuing to add information as you go
26:42through your apprenticeship now that
26:45does not mean this is the only way you
26:46can do it you can create your own resume
26:51I just wanted to give you a couple of
26:53templates that you could use as examples
26:56to kind of um you know give you a foot
26:59up when it came to starting to work on
27:02your resume so I hope this video helps
27:05make writing your resume and keeping up
27:08with your resume easy but if it hasn't
27:10set up a one-on-one with me so we can
27:13get your resume and topshape together
