1:59Is it necessary to know the Shroud of Turin to have faith? Is it essential to know
2:06the scientific studies to have faith? Did you know that the technique that
2:11created the image on this cloth surpasses NASA technology and that of the 21st century?
2:18We will return.
2:24According to Catholic theology, science is not strictly necessary to believe, but
2:30when science is used honestly, it will lead us to the thresholds of faith. There are
2:36mysteries in the Catholic faith that cannot be explained by science. However,
2:42the physical world and our cosmos are based on countless mysteries that are still unsolved.
2:56The oldest and most complete text that recounts the existence of the Shroud
3:00of Turin is found in the Gospel of John. Simon Peter also came, following him
3:06, and went into the tomb. He saw the linen cloths lying there, and the face cloth that had been
3:11wrapped around Jesus' head, not lying with the linen cloths but rolled up in a separate place.
3:17Then the other disciple, who had arrived first, also went in, and saw and believed.
3:23[Music] The itinerary of The Shroud has been very well recorded in history; countless
3:36documents, testimonies, analyses of pollen, dust particles, and
3:42other substances contained within it, as well as archaeological investigations, prove its authenticity. [Music]
4:02From Jerusalem, its place of origin, guarded by the first Christians,
4:06it is known that it arrived in the city where, in the second century, at the express wish of
4:12King Charles, who was ill with leprosy, it was miraculously cured upon touching the Holy Shroud
4:19during the restoration of the Hagia Sophia in the year 525.
4:26The linen appears recorded with the name Acheropita, meaning not made by human hands, Mandiyu, or Sheet,
4:32or Tetra Diploma, because it is folded in four folds. In public records
4:38[Music]
5:06After the victory of the Byzantine armies over the Arab Sultanate of Des, the
5:14Holy Shroud was solemnly transferred to the city of Constantinople, where
5:18it remained in the hands of the Byzantine Emperor, who allowed the Holy Shroud to be
5:23displayed every Friday of the month. Faithful in the church of the same imperial palace [Music]
5:34on the occasion of the fourth crusade and the consequent sack of the
5:37city in Byzantine or where Roche, a Burgundian knight, steals the apron and takes it to Europe,
5:43specifically to his castle of Besançon, where it is presumed to have suffered a first fire [Music]
5:50[Music]
6:31Over the years, the Holy Shroud will appear in the collegiate church of Lyre
6:37and in France as the property of the dukes in Desert Night. History tells us
6:42that Jean de Bordeaux, widow of Gottfried de Charney and its former owner
6:47, after his death, fell into a very difficult economic situation, which moved her to
6:53publicly exhibit the cloth and charge the attendees in order to subsist [Music].
7:03Unfortunately, Charney, who when she became a widow entered into a
7:09difficult economic situation, had the idea of exhibiting the Holy Shroud, charging for
7:16it, and this enraged the Bishop of Uribe, which resulted in
7:23the Holy Shroud having to be taken out of that city and later taken to Sanders and
7:33restored by the The Poor Clares would be the Dukes of Savoy who finally bought the
7:39sacred cloth from Margaret Mary Alacoque after the bandola to the city of Turin, where it remained until the
7:45present day. In this city, the Shroud of Turin would remain under the custody of the Cardinal of Turin
7:52but would continue to be the property of the Savoy family until 1983 when Umberto II, King
8:00of Italy in exile, died and bequeathed it in his will to the Catholic Church.
8:04[Music]
8:28And what is the Shroud of Turin? We are looking at the burial cloth that covered the body
8:35of Jesus Christ and that was placed with him in the tomb after the Descent from the Cross.
8:42And many may wonder why the Bible did not elaborate more on this aspect. [Music]
9:00We must place ourselves in the historical context. Jewish law strictly prohibited
9:06any contact with objects that had touched a corpse. Jesus had been executed
9:12by the Roman authorities because of the instigations of the Pharisees and had to be
9:18Buried by law in a single burial cloth according to the customs of the time [Music]
9:28those who witnessed the burial and subsequent events hid the cloth
9:33and did not speak of it so as not to contravene the laws of mourning that forbade touching it [Music]
9:44the information we have about the fabric of the Shroud of Turin is that it is pure linen that has
9:51been woven on a loom that worked cotton, which in Europe was not worked
9:58with cotton at that time, therefore it is a fabric that comes from the Middle East [Music]
10:09it is described as having a three-by-four weave or sapon weave and in this way,
10:17thanks to the electron microscope, it has been possible to see all the internal characteristics of the fabric
10:24in detail [Music] the gospels relate that a rich man, Joseph of Arimathea, was in the proportion
10:41of several types of marks found on the Shroud of Turin: burns from fires,
10:46the imprint of a man seen from the front and back, bloodstains that coincide
10:51with the biblical narratives of the torture and crucifixion of Jesus' wounds caused
10:57by blows, nails, a crown of thorns, watermarks, and a visible stain on his side.
11:05We know that for a long time, the Shroud was folded into 48 parts for preservation, and
11:13also into four parts to show the faces, hence the name tetra
11:19and blonde. And so it was preserved throughout history. This is one of the
11:24reasons why I liked it, in all those folds that have marked the apparition.
11:33And we can ask ourselves, can it be proven that this linen is from the first century? Is it
11:39possible to know if the man on this cloth is Jesus Christ? Are there purely
11:44natural causes that explain the origin of this double image? Did you know what answers
11:50eminent scientists in the fields of palynology, medicine,
11:56biochemistry, and nuclear physics have given to these questions, and that the same cutting-edge techniques used
12:01by NASA with 21st-century technology have been employed for their scientific assessment? Let's analyze these
12:09rigorous studies to find a scientific verdict on the Shroud of Turin. [Music]
12:28Turin 1898
12:32[Music]
12:38The first photograph taken of the Shroud of Turin was taken by the Italian lawyer
12:43Secondo Pia. While developing the captured image, he obtained the negative and was astonished to find
12:51that the final photographic result was actually an optical positive.
13:01His trembling hands could not believe what he was seeing.
13:06He was realizing that he was the first man in history to behold the true
13:13face of Jesus Christ. [Music] This discovery was the great beginning that led to a whole
13:21series of subsequent scientific studies, unprecedented in history, on the Holy Shroud.
13:28Scientists saw in this extraordinary event
13:32something transcendental, something unheard of that science has not yet been able to explain.
13:36[Music]
13:43Thanks to the discoveries made by the photographer Secondo Pia in 1898
13:54, and the discovery of the negative image, great interest arose among scientists to
14:01study this cloth rigorously. But the discovery of the figure of a human being
14:09also sparked interest in medical studies, and that is what we will now discuss. [Music] Now we will study
14:16the extraordinary discoveries obtained from the cloth with
14:27anatomical and pathological precision, carried out by a surgeon, Dr. Pierre Barber.
14:39Dr. Barber analyzed every detail of the Shroud, and always from a
14:44scientific point of view, there was no doubt that it was a man whose image revealed that he had suffered
14:50the Roman ritual of crucifixion and been tortured with extreme cruelty. His face was disfigured
14:56by contusions and bruises, his right eye swollen and almost closed, his nose deviated
15:02by broken cartilage, wounds all over his body, incisions, abrasions on the skin, puncture wounds, and a
15:09swollen abdomen as a sign of death. Everything pointed to the brutal martyrdom suffered by
15:17Jesus of Nazareth, who died of asphyxiation as the main cause of crucifixion. [Music]
15:31The great merit of Dr. Pierre Barber of the Sorbonne in Paris in carrying out the
15:37medical studies and comparing the anatomy of this man who appears on the cloth with that of several others.
15:48contemporary corpses to verify that it is evidently a human being and not
15:58just a painting, and not only that it is a human being but that it is actually a photograph
16:07and a human body, a mysterious photograph that has no explanation and that perfectly matches
16:14all the parts of the anatomy that have been juxtaposed to canvases [Music]
16:25x-ray images of skulls and also of hands and feet.
16:34He will come to the conclusion that this cloth and the human form that appears in it give
16:43sufficient proof that it is a crucified person, that he has been flogged, that he has been tortured,
16:51also two things that are not normal in Roman law because either a
17:00person was crucified or flogged, but they were not punished twice for the same crime. Therefore, in this
17:07specific case, we have no historical doubt that it is the person of Jesus Christ because
17:14he is the only historical figure we know of who has been crucified and unjustly flogged
17:22at the same time. Dr. Pierre Barbet, among his discoveries, is the part of the head
17:31where we see the long hair perfectly defined in The broad forehead, the well-defined ones, one
17:43of them with a rather deep wound, mustache and beard, bloodstains all over
17:51the hair and those running down the forehead indicating the presence of a sharp object that
17:59was in his head, which was evidently the crown of thorns. He will also discover
18:05how we have the chest, which is full of sores, a well-formed chest, as he says, athletic,
18:14with wounds wide open that are relating to the existence of the skinny Roman. Subsequently, we have
18:24here the water stain, and further down we have the part of the abdomen swollen from asphyxiation, since
18:32the crucified man has his whole body hanging over his arms and hands, which causes
18:42the chest to contract, producing asphyxiation, and that will therefore be left marked. But he will not be
18:53able to study the arms because they have been lost due to the fire, which we see here in these
18:58parts with the patches that had been repaired. But he will be able to study the forearms, in which
19:07there is an irregular flow of blood because these parts were touching the wood during the
19:15crucifixion, and since the crucified man was By continuously pushing the bone upwards, the blood that
19:23touches the wood will move in a zigzag pattern up and down. That is the logical, natural explanation
19:32for this phenomenon. We also see that Dr. Diego Alves perfectly observes the pooling that
19:40comes from the opening made in the right side, which is the blood separating from
19:49the plasma. That is why we see a whitish pooling in its bordering or peripheral areas,
19:58which is what the Apostle Saint John described as seeing blood and water flow out. This same
20:09anatomical doctor will find the difference between the blood identified in the wounds
20:18throughout the body and also that which is in this part of the side, which is the pooling caused
20:28by the lance that pierced the right side. Later, more modern studies regarding
20:36the blood will corroborate this difference because the blood identified
20:43in the wounds came from a body that was still alive. And how can this be proven?
20:50By the large amount of bilirubin, which is the body's reaction to an attack
20:59and its attempt to close the wound. The wounds are consistent with exsanguination; however,
21:06the blood on the right side is already identifiable as
21:15decomposing blood, that is, postmortem blood, since the red blood cells are separating from the plasma.
21:24Later, we also see in the hands that the phalanges
21:31of the fingers are perfectly delineated, and how the nail pierces the metacarpal bone at the wrist,
21:41precisely where it was placed. According to Dr. Pierre Barbet, proof of this is that by piercing this
21:48part of the metacarpal, it will sever those nerves. The thumb will always contract; therefore,
21:54it is irrefutable proof that the nail pierced precisely in this area. He discovered
22:04that by piercing this area and severing the median nerve, there is such intense pain that it can cause...
22:14paroxysm, and precisely when the forearms are hitting against the wood of the cross
22:23and pushing upwards continuously to avoid suffocation, it will produce an even
22:31more intense pain in these parts of the wrist. It could produce the paroxysm, and
22:40a normal person could not withstand it, since he dies hours later when
22:46he wants to, the moment he gives that great cry of which Sanjuán speaks. He has also studied the
22:54part of the legs to see the correspondence with human anatomy, and we also see that they are
23:02bare and full of wounds up to the tips of the feet. We thus confirm how the
23:11prophecy of Isaiah is fulfilled, 750 years before Jesus Christ: from the top of his head to the tips of
23:19his toes there will not be a single part, Shannon. And we also have, even on the feet, the
23:27pooling of blood indicating exactly where the nails have pierced both feet
23:35. [Music]
23:52From the dorsal part of the image of the man of the shroud, the doctor is going to discover that there is a
24:03very prominent bloodstain that runs from one end of the waist to the other, and He needs
24:11to find a logical explanation for this phenomenon. Evidently, it could only have happened when
24:17this cloth is covering his body and a large amount of blood
24:27and plasma is gushing from his open side, which logically pools at the back of the waist. This is what
24:35Dr. Pierre Barbet will call the rubric. To discover the parts of
24:42the Shroud's authenticity, there are between 90 and 120 wounds caused by flagellation all over the body.
24:52What is the origin of these wounds, which appear across a large part of the body and
24:57are found in pairs? This is the only instrument of torture that can explain
25:02such wounds: the flagpole. The flagpole is a
25:10Roman instrument of torture consisting of a wooden pole with leather straps whose ends terminate
25:15in lead balls. Its purpose is not to take life but to torture and bleed the
25:22prisoner. The balls pierce the flesh superficially, tearing away a piece of
25:27tissue, thus causing bleeding and producing painful abrasions and cuts. Its
25:34direct action is brutal to the point that Roman law It forbade its use against its citizens.
25:42I offer my back to those who beat me and my cheeks to those who kissed my beard. [Music]
25:48[Music]
26:07And what physical explanation exists to explain this greater intensity where the blows on the
26:12right are greater than those on the left at an atomic level that Dr. Pierre is going to discover on the cloth?
26:21It is the detail of the blows that we see continuously repeated with parallel balls
26:30in groups of three, in a total of six per blow, because they are clearly from three leather straps and each
26:43strap with two lead balls. That lead ball is intended to embed itself or pierce the skin
26:51and tear off a superficial piece of skin. And we see how the first ball that impacts hits harder,
27:01therefore it is more marked. However, we observe in some parts that
27:11the ball on the right side is more strongly impacted than the one on the left, and that order is reversed.
27:17The only explanation for this phenomenon is that there was a flagrant on each side who was
27:27hitting the body, and that means that there were two men who were flagellating simultaneously.
27:38This detail is also important to consider when thinking about what a supposed It would have been impossible for a painter of the
27:46thirteenth or fourteenth century to have thought of it
27:52with the sole purpose of deceiving us in such a supposed painting. [Music]
28:18The surprises in Dr. Barbet's investigations did not end there. The image also revealed
28:25very deep wounds on the left shoulder, linear and parallel,
28:31descending from the top. From the appearance of these wounds, it could be concluded that a very
28:38heavy weight caused them, to the point that parts of the bone could be seen. And what could have been the
28:45cause? The fact that we discover deep, hard wounds in the
28:55flesh on his left shoulder shows that this man was carrying a very heavy crossbeam on that shoulder. If
29:05it had been a horizontal beam across both shoulders, he would never have left this mark.
29:12The imprint left in this way against the shoulder, Dr. Piero, therefore,
29:21also discovered this detail of the very deep wound on the left shoulder. [Music]
29:32Another quite conclusive part is that the chemical studies that analyzed the
29:39perforation of the feet and hands found traces of
29:44iron oxide only in those places precisely where it is said that he was nailed to the cross.
29:50Another detail that is impossible for any painter to imagine in order to deceive us, what
29:57we can see that was really the work of Dr. Piano Bardet is, first,
30:03to prove that it is a human being, not a simple painting, because he demonstrates that it is
30:11impossible for a painter to make those details of the wrist perforation, the phalanges that
30:18appear from the hands, the contracted shears that appear on the hand that has been perforated,
30:24also on his wrist, those types of blood that have sprung out, which are three different ones, on the skull,
30:32the crown of thorns, which we know was pierced by a vein, a capillary, or
30:40arteries, and also to see that this anatomy coincides perfectly with
30:47current human skeletons. These are compelling proofs that a painter from the Middle Ages... More than anything, I
30:54mean, I couldn't possibly think of all those anatomical details in such a perfect way,
31:04and an academic from the Sorbonne in Paris, an agnostic who evidently didn't have faith, upon seeing
31:13all the scientific studies that had been done on the Shroud of Turin, he wasn't
31:19so convinced that the man on the cloth was Jesus Christ that he was absolutely certain
31:27that this man was the Jesus Christ of history, and that's why he received so many attacks and
31:33was even removed from his position for having stated so categorically the
31:40certainty that it was Jesus Christ the man we were studying. [Music]
32:21Some have considered the Shroud of Turin a possible fraud, but with science in
32:26hand, we can ask ourselves how an artist from the early centuries of Christianity or
32:33the Middle Ages could imagine an image negative whose effect could only have been discovered
32:38with 19th-century technology. Until the 4th century, the figure of Jesus Christ was represented
32:47in other forms, such as the Good Shepherd, a typically Roman image: short hair,
32:53shaved face, youthful appearance, Roman tunic, and carrying a sheep in his hands.
32:59[Music] Before From the fourth century onwards, Jesus Christ was always depicted as the Good Shepherd,
33:13with the appearance of a short-haired, clean-shaven Roman, carrying a sheep on his shoulders. But from
33:22the conversion of Constantine in 313 AD, we discover that the iconography of Jesus Christ
33:31changes radically. We see a Jesus Christ with long hair, a mustache, and a
33:39beard—a typical Jew. This shows that when Christianity ceased to be persecuted, artists
33:49began to draw inspiration from what they saw in the face on the Shroud of Turin. This explains the strong
33:58coincidence in the iconography from the fourth century onwards in facial features.
34:06According to current Orthodox Jewish rabbis, the style of the beard and hair, with the lock
34:12of hair falling down his back, undoubtedly corresponds to a first-century Jew. [Music]
34:32Lofton, author Walter Weiss, Machiavellian.
34:36[Music] In October 1978, 40 non-Catholic American scientists, some of
34:50them affiliated with NASA, volunteered, assuming all expenses,
34:55to subject the Shroud of Turin to scientific study. In rigorous use with the most advanced cutting-edge technology
35:01of the moment, we can reach a verdict on its falsity or authenticity.
35:09But before beginning to scientifically study this cloth, we can ask ourselves: is it technically
35:15possible that the Shroud of Turin, made of pure linen, is preserved today in such good condition?
35:22Technically, it is possible, observing these images of the mummy Margaret, which dates back to approximately
35:311350 BC, to which linen bands were placed—exactly
35:38the same material as the Shroud of Turin. Therefore, the Shroud of Turin itself
35:44is not a miracle as a fabric, but rather the image that is an extraordinary fact.
35:53What intimate secrets does the holy syndrome hide? What has science discovered?
36:00What happened to the man of the Shroud of Turin? This is about the historical Jesus Christ.
36:11The discoveries of the
36:15renowned Swiss scientist and criminologist Max Greig, who worked for the
36:21Swiss police in detecting criminals through pollen trapped in the clothing of
36:26suspects, had a great scientific impact. This eminent doctor traveled to Palestine, Lebanon, Turkey, Syria, and Europe.
36:37Max Greig, a Swiss scientist, spent four years conducting his studies,
36:45collecting all the pollen he found on the cloth. During those four years, he
36:53traveled to the Middle East, specifically to Jerusalem, to the areas that were actively involved in the Holocaust,
37:01such as Syria, and later to Turkey, where it is now located, in Istanbul, which was
37:10Constantinople, where the Shroud of Turin was kept. In this way, he was able to trace the entire journey of the
37:19Shroud of Turin, which history tells us about in geographical terms. In his research
37:25on the cloth, he discovered up to 31 species of pollen. Pollen is from different countries, regions, and eras.
37:35In these images, we observe several types of pollen with their scientific names, found
37:41on the Holy Shroud and viewed under a microscope with thousands of magnifications.
37:47The doctor concluded his studies with this resounding statement: "I am certain that this linen has
37:54been exposed to the open air in Palestine." Among these elements,
38:01some deformed and whitish shapes were also found, some of a very solid appearance. Having
38:07analyzed them chemically, it was demonstrated that they were undoubtedly the elements used
38:12to embalm the body of Jesus Christ, as the Holy Scriptures tell us.
38:19When electron microscopes are placed on the finest filaments
38:25of the cloth, it is categorically confirmed that this man of this cloth was buried
38:34according to Jewish rituals in which incense was generally exposed to him. [Music]
38:57[
38:58Music]
39:09Years after this surprising discovery, a Jewish botanist, Avinoam Danning, a member of
39:16the prestigious Hebrew University of Jerusalem, found on the Holy Shroud the imprint of several
39:21endemic plants and The discovery of the cig or phil, a
39:29zoom dome, or the gum of the fort tower, which only exist in Palestine, was another key to authenticating the Shroud of Turin, as
39:35these plants, among others, are only found as endemic species in areas very close to Jerusalem.
39:43The botanist Avinoam, an Israeli woman, corroborated Dr. Maxwell's studies
39:51with his own research, finding endemic or psychic plants within the
40:00cloth that belong only to the surroundings of the city of Jerusalem. You will observe
40:08these plants that only bloom at Passover time, that is, at the time that
40:15coincides with the crucifixion. He has already verified the existence of pollen. It is about
40:23the origin of the time of Holy Week. Avinoam has therefore already shown that
40:32these discoveries also coincide, thus confirming the previous findings. [Music]
41:15In their 120 hours of work on the Shroud, the START team detected other
41:21differentiated particles in the linen, some of them reddish in color once viewed under a
41:27microscope. With thousands of magnifications, they observed that it was not paint pigments
41:32but human blood, present in crystallized particles as a
41:38result of a solidification process. This surprising finding completely ruled out the possibility
41:45that the image printed on the canvas had been the work of a supposed painter or artist.
41:50[Music]
41:58They were able to verify this by subjecting some threads of the canvas to a process called microspectrophotometry
42:04. Through this procedure, when ultraviolet light strikes the blood,
42:10specifically the fine threads, it becomes fluorescent, revealing that it is
42:16human blood. This fact is revealed in all parts of the canvas where the
42:23blood component was present, unlike the edges of the stain, which were analyzed as blood plasma.
42:30Thanks to advances in modern technology, we can see here this program
42:37that will apply a microdensitometer, which is used for photographing planets.
42:46And also star systems where we'll see that the image will be computerized,
42:55or digitized, and thus the colors are converted into numbers. We'll request information
43:05from that system and program to give us the natural colors of the fire, which it made orange-yellow,
43:15and we see it perfectly reflected in the parts that have been damaged by the fires.
43:27We'll see that the blood is also perfectly identified as red.
43:34What will surprise scientists the most, and is the biggest discovery of this whole series of
43:44studies on the savanna, is that the entire face and the entire image of the man on the cloth also
43:52appears in the color of fire. That is to say, this is irrefutable proof that the image
44:03of the man on this cloth was not made with paint pigments or chemical mixtures, but
44:13is actually a very light, extremely fine radiation. And that is why Dr. Franklin, Nobel Prize winner
44:24in Physics, will affirm that a flash of 1,300,000 degrees of temperature is needed.
44:32[Music]
44:46Therefore, it is impossible for a supposed painter of the Middle Ages to develop an
44:52image technique that only fluorescent photography... In the 20th century, observing the same image
45:03in the information provided by the computer to see the intensity of the front
45:11and back of the image, we find that it has the same intensity. According to the laws
45:19of physics, the normal thing would be that the part where the body was resting, the back, which was
45:27supporting the entire weight of the body, should have been impacted or recorded much more strongly.
45:36However, we find that both the front and back have the same intensity,
45:43leading to the conclusion that this man, at the moment he was leaving his image
45:50on the canvas, was weightless, floating in the air. [Applause] [Music]
45:58[Music] To the astonishment of many, cutting-edge 21st-century technology applied to an
46:19ancient linen canvas from the first century reveals hidden secrets that conceal a message
46:24for the new scientific minds of the centuries of science. The V8 is one of these new
46:32instruments of this fascinating new modern technology. The V8 is a spectrophotometer that
46:40digitally generates an unconventional photograph made using ultraviolet rays, capable
46:45of photographing and Reconstructing geographical environments in multiple dimensions with the added ability to
46:52capture images in complete darkness is a system that performs a
46:58multispectral and mathematical analysis of photographic images through the interplay of light and shadow.
47:03The VP8 system is the most advanced program we can use for
47:17reproducing photographic images because it is a multispectral image that is converted to
47:26digital, but with the great advantage that an ultraviolet beam scans the orography
47:35of the site to be photographed, even without light. This device or program,
47:45therefore, is what made the most extraordinary discovery of the Shroud of Turin in terms of its
47:53three-dimensionality, since no other device can discover or read this except the VP8.
48:02When a conventional image is processed with the VP8, it produces a deformed image:
48:09sunken noses, bulging eyes, and various distortions. However,
48:15this does not happen with the image of the Shroud. This image of a Vietnam War soldier, taken by the scientist
48:23Schumacher, was also processed using the VP8 system. Once processed by this three-dimensional
48:35system, we see which These are the results: we observe sunken eyebrows, deformed eyes,
48:44a sunken nose, and a distorted mouth, so the entire face is no longer recognizable and
48:52bears no resemblance to the previous normal image. This proves that this image lacks
49:00the three-dimensionality of the Shroud of Turin and that no other image exists that
49:07possesses this three-dimensionality and multiple dimensions, only detectable by the VP8 system. If we analyze
49:16each thread that forms the image with an electron microscope, we find the astonishing
49:21discovery that the first fibers of each thread are singed one by one with surgical precision
49:27and perfection. In some threads, hard charring appears on the first 3 or 4 fibers.
49:35In some cases, the first four or six threads, and in others, the first five or eight, for example, but the
49:44hard scorch never reached the entire thread, not even halfway through.
49:49These various levels of hard scorch are the rigorous scientific explanation that the
49:55VP8 system detected and provided for the observation of the image's three-dimensionality. [Music]
50:10Thanks to the fact that the threads of the Shroud of Turin have different levels of hard scorch,
50:16the system can
50:25read and discover at what level, at what height, each thread is scorched, and this will
50:35result in a reconstruction of several levels of hard scorch, which
50:42makes it possible to reconstruct it in three dimensions. This characteristic is not possessed by
50:48any painting or engraving in the entire history of humanity. [Music]
51:22According to the words of the scientist
51:28Schumacher himself, who created the VP8 program, there is no image that has these qualities at
51:35all. There is not, nor will there ever be, nor is it known that there is, nor can
51:40an image with all these qualities of different levels of three-dimensionality
51:49be reproduced . To date, The conclusions are unequivocal: no physical mechanism
51:54can produce an image that is simultaneously three-dimensional and highly detailed.
52:02The only possible explanation for the image that appears in the week is a kind of radiation—
52:10that flash of which Dr. Franklin, Nobel laureate in Physics and inventor of
52:19radioactive carbon-14 dating, speaks. Dr. Franklin roughly explains it by saying that
52:30a flash equivalent to 1,300,000 degrees Celsius would be necessary, which would obviously be almost
52:40three times the power of a nuclear bomb. We are talking here about a double miracle, if one
52:48can say so in those terms, since if there had been a heat output equivalent to three
52:55atomic bombs, it would have destroyed all of Jerusalem. The miracle consists precisely in the fact that there was the
53:03flash equivalent to, but not the heat output that would have caused the destruction. Therefore, there is
53:11a separation of cause and effect, and for this reason, it is even more miraculous. The Storm team continued its
53:19surprising discoveries. Once the three-dimensionality of the image was verified,
53:26several no less impactful scientific findings followed. Some, to deny the
53:37extraordinary image of this 'Shroud of Turin,' argue that it was engraved
53:47on the cloth by skin contact, however, with the information we have found,
53:55there are many parts of the body that were not touching the cloth, such as the neck, chin, and
54:01some parts of the chest, for example, and that despite not touching the cloth, they also engraved the
54:07image, which shows that there has been radiation permeating the cloth even at a distance.
54:18The hypothesis of physical contact for the formation of the image falls apart. [Music]
54:41In 1980, Francis Filas, a professor of theology at Loyola University
54:47in Chicago, observed in astonishment the image of a coin in one of the eyes of the man on the Shroud.
54:53Filas declared that he could read the inscription on the coin and identified it as a Latvian-Roman coin.
55:01This is one of the greatest and most impactful discoveries regarding the
55:09authenticity of the Shroud of Turin and the date of its origin, since Father
55:17Filas of Loyola University discovered and identified a coin inscribed in the year 30-33 AD, in which
55:29it was minted by Pontius Pilate, and we have it juxtaposed here to the image on the right.
55:37The Holy Shroud of Turin, where we place in its negative, perfectly identifies the staff,
55:49and around it we see the letters, the law of Caixas is born, which means Caesar. There is something extremely
56:04important because it proves that this man is a man from the first century, and more precisely, it
56:13is a man who was executed in the years 30 to 33 AD. Once
56:24these extraordinary scientific discoveries were confirmed, another question arose: can it be stated that
56:32the authenticity of the Shroud of Turin is doubtful in light of carbon-14 dating,
56:39the radioactive carbon-14 method for dating objects invented by
56:47Dr. Frank Liebe, Nobel laureate in physics, is going to apply this method to the Shroud of
56:56Turin, but this application is controversial since there are no guarantees that it can be applied
57:05to a linen that has suffered fires, that has been handled for so many centuries
57:10by candle smoke, by the grease of hands, and also because a piece of fabric was cut
57:18for analysis that was precisely doubtful of belonging to the Shroud.
57:26[Music]
57:35Again, the most advanced science has the floor. [Music]
57:38[Music]
57:51And what does carbon-14 dating consist of? Radioactive carbon-14 is what
58:00we have in the atmosphere, a product of the solar radiation that we are
58:07constantly receiving. These are particles that are constantly bathing us,
58:16so to speak, and when they settle on our bodies, our clothes, on any material being,
58:23then when that amount of carbon is subsequently measured in objects,
58:35it can give a fairly approximate date of the object's age. Normally, carbon-
58:4314 disappears gradually from an object as the years go by, and
58:52also in a completely orderly way that can be quantified, if possible. Once
58:59this calculation is done, then we can know the age of this object.
59:12There may be limits or deficiencies in the carbon-14 dating method.
59:16A Viking horn that was sent to the Tucson laboratory in Arizona for
59:25treatment, whose age was already known, was obviously altered, and
59:33after the adaptation, it turned out to have a date of 2035 AD, that is,
59:41in the future. This clearly shows how an object that has been damaged by
59:48fire or radiation can give a false date. [Music]
1:00:02A scientist, Dimitri Curne Soft, carried out an experiment. The three pieces of
1:00:07cloth cut from the Turing Shroud were measured and weighed with millimeter precision
1:00:12before being sent to three laboratories that performed the carbon-14 test.
1:00:20Dr. Dimitri began in 1994. He possessed a first-century INAH cloth, which he sent in three
1:00:27pieces to three laboratories: Turing, Oxford, and Zurich, requesting carbon-14 dating. The three
1:00:35laboratories responded. unanimously agreed that it was a first-century cloth. The doctor
1:00:40sent the same pieces again, but this time charred, requesting their dating once more. [Music]
1:00:51The conclusive result was that these three charred pieces were treated with an
1:00:56approximation of the 13th or 14th centuries when the cloths were actually from the first century.
1:01:06Faced with this conclusion, the doctor sent them a report informing them
1:01:10that a cloth damaged by fire or any element foreign to its nature
1:01:14gave a false and erroneous dating using the carbon-14 method.
1:01:21According to the scientific consultant of Cardinal Valle, Dr. Gonela denounced that
1:01:30there was a kind of carbon-14 mafia that wanted at all costs to discredit the
1:01:40Shroud of Turin. In fact, before the carbon-14 tests were done,
1:01:47the headlines had already been prepared, such as "the most fake relic in all of history."
1:01:55[Music]
1:02:03Amidst all this international spectacle, it would be the very inventor of the
1:02:08radioactive method, Dr. Franklin and Nobel Prize winner in Physics, who would declare that his method It could not
1:02:14be applied to the Shroud of Turin given the alterations and vicissitudes that affected
1:02:20the cloth over so many centuries. Another important argument for
1:02:27why the Holy Week cloth cannot be subjected to carbon-14 dating
1:02:35is the study done by microbiologist Garza Valdez, who found
1:02:43a layer of bacteria on the cloth and its weave. This would certainly produce a false carbon-14 date.
1:02:56If we translate into mathematical numbers the 5,000 hours that scientists spend on the
1:03:01Shroud of Turin, the result would be the following: there are 5,000 trillion possibilities that the
1:03:08man on the shroud is Jesus Christ versus one possibility that he is not. [Music]
1:03:31The scientists reached the following conclusions [Music]
1:03:37: that the scorching only affects the most superficial part of the threads.
1:03:44that extremely detailed data was found in the wind
1:03:49that the fires did not affect the image of the Shroud of Turin'
1:03:55that the V8 provided compelling evidence reaffirming
1:04:00the three-dimensionality of the image on the canvas
1:04:07the negative of the image that Secondo Pia will reveal is an optical positive
1:04:15that the image of Holy Week is completely devoid of brushstrokes it is a
1:04:20flash radiation that produced an image and therefore lacks directionality [Music]
1:04:27some art specialists, in order to know
1:04:33to whom such a painting belongs, who the author is, study the directionality of the
1:04:40brushstrokes a lot we, studying the image of the Shroud of Turin,' find absolutely
1:04:47no directionality of brushstrokes the image has been engraved an imprint like
1:04:54a flash of a single blow something that no painter can do neither in this era nor in
1:05:01ancient times much less and that is what is called the absence of directionality in the Shroud of Turin
1:05:13with science in hand we have scientifically proven that the man of the Shroud of
1:05:18Turin is a crucified man who died exactly between the years 30 and 33 AD we have
1:05:27scientifically proven that it is From a cloth that almost certainly comes from the
1:05:32Middle East—Palestine—we have scientifically proven that the man of the Shroud of Turin was tortured,
1:05:40scourged, crowned with thorns, and pierced with nails, and that this corpse, at a certain
1:05:46moment after his death, expelled such a great amount of energy, equivalent to a flash
1:05:53of 1,300,000 degrees Celsius, a phenomenon which proves that this man regained life [Music]
1:06:04because no body, living or dead, can release such a quantity of energy [Music].
1:06:37We have studied the man of the Shroud from a historical, medical, and scientific point of view,
1:06:49but now let us reflect on the most important thing: what is the
1:06:56spiritual message that the man of the cloth of this Shroud of Turin wants to give us?
1:07:04Precisely because he suffered, because of all this torture, because of this suffering, some
1:07:12non-believers, some pagan, toxic, or atheist people will ask us the question:
1:07:20why does God have to redeem and save us with so much suffering? Aren't there more pleasant means
1:07:28to save us? Why does it have to be precisely this torture? The only
1:07:35satisfactory explanation is that the origin The drama of humanity—wars, divisions,
1:07:42hatred, and so much misery—has been an act of pride on the part of man against God.
1:07:51Suffering and all these negative things were not in God's plan; it was man who
1:07:58caused them. And to save us from that act of pride, which I have called original sin,
1:08:03a sacrifice was necessary from a unique divine being capable of erasing our sins and faults.
1:08:12Therefore, this is not negative, just as any father or mother is capable of sacrificing themselves
1:08:20to the point of death to save their children, and that sacrifice of their parents is not considered
1:08:27negative but positive. Similarly, any human being who suffers and disciplines themselves to achieve
1:08:33positive goals will never consider their sacrifices negative. Therefore, this suffering
1:08:41to save us has the purpose of returning the glory that we wanted to steal from God
1:08:48with our pride, always placing ourselves above and above His majesty. Normally, when doctors
1:08:58are going to give us antidotes against a poison, that poison will precisely
1:09:05be manufactured or made with the same poison of the insect or animal that has
1:09:15harmed us. The deepest and most effective antidote to pride is suffering
1:09:23because it humbles us and makes us humble; therefore, it is not negative. This is the reason
1:09:31suffering exists; it is not absurd, therefore it is necessary. And in fact, there are many people
1:09:37who, after having suffered deeply, have confessed and acknowledged that after years of
1:09:44suffering they have become more human, more humble, more positive, and less selfish. That is to say,
1:09:50suffering, when used wisely, makes us better people. This suffering is also
1:09:57reflected in a final message, since we fear suffering; it horrifies us.
1:10:05And we always tend to avoid it, it's normal because of the tendency of human nature. It's reflected
1:10:12in the sense that this image is itself a photographic negative, and when its
1:10:19negative is revealed, then we'll see that the message becomes clear. What we considered
1:10:27negative is positive. The suffering that we fear so much and hear so much about, and
1:10:35consider negative, becomes positive when we offer it, when we know how to guide it,
1:10:42when we know how to frame it intelligently and use it in an intelligent way.
1:10:48Therefore, that is also the great message that this image has: what we considered
1:10:57negative is positive. This image, which is itself a negative, becomes positive once
1:11:05it is analyzed deeply with all the means of current science. [Music]
