0:08hey everyone we're going to go through
0:10some information regarding honors
0:11advising and your options for honors as
0:13a new student please let us know if you
0:16have any questions after you review this
0:18information there's additional
0:20information you can look at on our
0:22website and at the end of this video you
0:24will need to complete a form that
0:25confirms that you watch the video also
0:28on that form you will be able to list if
0:30you are bringing in any AP credit
0:32Governor's School or IB credit this
0:34information lets you know what to expect
0:36and with the honors requirements and
0:38your options to participate in honors
0:41First It's always important to remember
0:43that priority registration early
0:46registration with honors is not
0:47automatic you must attend one of these
0:50workshops or watch one of these videos
0:52every semester and then we'll review
0:54your progress in honors and your GPA to
0:57make sure that you're eligible you have
0:59to stay on track for honors to get
1:01qualified for early registration so even
1:04though right now you can only be taking
1:06maybe one or two classes at some point
1:08you will need to be pursuing the final
1:11honors minor um to continue to be
1:14approved but this is a good chance at
1:16least for your first couple of years to
1:18get early registration with honors check
1:20out our courses and see if that's
1:22something you want to pursue later on
1:25also to remain honors eligible you must
1:27have a 325 GPA here at MTSU if you go
1:31below that you might be able to have a
1:33probation semester depending on your
1:36overall status but to continue on with
1:39honors remember you need to have that
1:41GPA there's many ways you can
1:43participate in honors you don't have to
1:45commit to completing a full honors minor
1:47or graduating with honors first you can
1:50take honors courses randomly as they fit
1:52within your schedule each semester if
1:54you complete at least 15 hours of those
1:56honors courses you can earn a
1:59certificate which is something nice you
2:00can add to your resume or to different
2:04um areas on applications where they're
2:06asking for achievements or
2:08certifications that you've received if
2:11you want to do more with honors and
2:12complete a thesis we have two minor
2:14options the first is the full honors
2:16graduation requirements which requires
2:1923 hours of honors and the second is for
2:22students who maybe are starting with us
2:24a little bit later or who have
2:26transferred in and don't have previous
2:27honors courses and that's the Hors
2:30associate minor which requires only 11
2:32hours of honors but it still does
2:34include the thesis we don't add an
2:37honors minor to your record until you
2:39enroll in one of the uh courses which
2:42are typically found in your junior or
2:44Senior
2:45Year we're changing our overall
2:47requirements from 29 hours down to 23
2:51and the differences you'll see is that
2:53there's 15 hours of any level honors
2:55coursework so any level means 1,000
2:58through 4,000 and that can can include
3:00contracts study abroad uh research hours
3:03internships so we have a lot of
3:05different ways to fulfill those hours if
3:07you can't find honors coursework and
3:10then an additional eight hours of upper
3:12division honors coursework that's broken
3:14down into those specific requirements
3:17there that you see on the screen so one
3:19hour honors lecture series three hours
3:21to fulfill the interdisciplinary seminar
3:23which you have a few options of how to
3:25do that and then the four hours that
3:27make up the honors thesis it's important
3:30to remember that thesis does take two
3:31semesters to complete and so typically
3:34you're going to start that towards the
3:35end of your junior year or beginning of
3:37your senior year and then finish it in
3:40the following semester honors
3:41interdisciplinary seminar is one of the
3:43upper division requirements there are a
3:45few ways to fulfill this requirement one
3:48you can take the actual honors
3:50interdisciplinary seminar course this is
3:52a special topics course that's offered
3:54every semester and each semester the
3:56topic changes so you'll just need to
3:58reach out to us to see what topic and
4:00subject matter will be for that next
4:02semester you may also in the summer
4:05participate in the Institute of
4:06Leadership Excellence which is a one
4:08week summer course um that many of our
4:10students have enjoyed in the past and
4:12that will also automatically fulfill the
4:15interdisciplinary seminar
4:17requirement um you may also be able to
4:19enroll in an honor section of a 3,000 or
4:214,000 level course um that you aren't
4:24already using for the previous 15 hours
4:28um and then we can use it in this
4:29category and if there's no other honors
4:32sections we always can look at an honors
4:34contract finally many students complete
4:37this requirement by using an upper
4:39division study AB broad course an
4:41internship or a research course if you
4:44are going to go with one of those
4:46options there is a special form that
4:47you'll need to fill out for us honors
4:50contracts are always an option if you
4:51run out of honors hours um and want to
4:54turn one of your regular courses into an
4:56honors course we do have a few rules
4:59that go along with honors contracts one
5:01there's a form you need to fill out and
5:03have approved by a deadline each
5:04semester so if you're looking at it for
5:06this fall the deadline is September 30th
5:10but to receive honors credit for a
5:11non-honors course um either if it's
5:14upper division or lower division we need
5:17to look to see if one it's always
5:19offered as honors so if it's a 1,000 or
5:212,000 level course and we always offer
5:25it as an honors course you're not going
5:26to be able to complete an honors
5:28contract in it so an example is you
5:30can't take a regular section of English
5:322020 and turn it into an honors contract
5:36because we always have English 2020
5:38courses um there are several 2,000
5:41courses out there though that we don't
5:43have honor sections of and so you may
5:45find a 2,000 level and that's not a
5:47problem three and 4,000 level we also
5:50can usually be pretty generous
5:52especially if you're taking the course
5:53in a semester where that honors option
5:56is not typically um available so for for
5:59instance say you take genetics through
6:01biology in the spring semester we only
6:04offer it as honors in the fall so in the
6:06spring it's not as big of a deal to
6:08approve it as a contract um you will
6:10need special approval to get a 1,000
6:13level course approved they are typically
6:15not approved but under special
6:17circumstances we will review it and then
6:19we will not allow more than two
6:21contracts unless you have special
6:23approval to be counted towards the 23
6:25hours total that you need for honors
6:27graduation
6:30one of the benefits of completing an
6:32honors minor is doing the honors thesis
6:35and there's a lot of good reasons to do
6:37an honors thesis it helps you prepare
6:39for graduate school if that's your next
6:41option many graduate programs require a
6:43thesis and this gives you a more
6:46supported um experience to kind of learn
6:48what goes into a thesis and doing
6:50independent research before you are out
6:53on your own in grad school or if you're
6:56not going straight to grad school you
6:57can use it as a chance to build a
6:59professional portfolio it does set you
7:01apart from other undergraduates because
7:03with the exception of physics no other
7:05MTSU student is required to do a thesis
7:08it allows you to have some faculty
7:10mentorship and develop closer
7:12relationships with your faculty and
7:13learn more about your discipline and
7:15potentially get good letters of
7:17recommendation and contacts for the
7:19future and then it's really a chance for
7:22you to dig into something you're truly
7:24passionate about there is another video
7:26that goes more into the thesis and what
7:28to expect and how to get ready for it
7:31that's on our website listed there on
7:32the screen I encourage you that if
7:35you're a sophomore or Junior that you go
7:37ahead and also watch that video um so
7:40you can learn a little bit more about
7:41thesis also you can talk come and talk
7:44to one of us in the honors advising
7:46office and we can go into it in more
7:48detail as
7:49well we have scholarships every year for
7:52continuing student um these are one-year
7:55scholarships that range from $3 to
7:57$1,500 you can stack these with other
8:00scholarships that you're receiving um so
8:02we recommend that you look at our
8:04scholarships portion of our website each
8:06year and fill out an application if you
8:09don't get it one year don't be
8:10discouraged apply again usually as you
8:13continue on with the program you become
8:15more competitive um and juniors and
8:18seniors have often better chances
8:20especially to get those higher um valued
8:24scholarships we have a variety of other
8:27opportunities that aren't necessarily
8:28specific honors um but they do tie into
8:32our program very nicely so one we do
8:34have honor study abroad program and so
8:37you'll be on the lookout for more
8:38information about honors and if that's
8:40something you're interested in you can
8:42go to those information sessions you may
8:44also look at any other study abroad
8:46program you can use study abroad credits
8:49towards your honors requirements and if
8:51you're active in honors you can qualify
8:53for Honor
8:54scholarships we also have scholarships
8:57that can help you get a passport if you
8:58don't have one or if it's time to renew
9:00one um we have an office called the
9:03undergraduate Fellowship office that can
9:04help you look at National fellowships
9:06and scholarships and I encourage you to
9:08reach out to Laura Clipper to get more
9:10information on that and look through
9:12some of the videos and website
9:13information she has there Eureka is a
9:16chance to get money to help pay um for
9:19your experience with research it's
9:21sponsored through the undergraduate
9:23research center and so you can come and
9:25talk with us um either before or while
9:27you're doing your thesis if want to look
9:29at how to get involved in research on
9:31campus and have the opportunity to get
9:34paid for doing so collage is an literary
9:37and arts magazine that we sponsor
9:39through the Honors College you can
9:41either um submit materials to be
9:43included in the magazine or work as part
9:46of the staff scansa is our Journal of
9:49student research and you can also submit
9:52um papers to that with the hopes of
9:54being published um or you can work on
9:57staff for that journal as well we have
9:59honors ambassadors who sponsor events
10:02and gets togethers about once a month
10:04every semester um we encourage you to
10:06keep an eye out for those events come
10:08get to know your fellow honors students
10:10and have that kind of community building
10:12or if you want to participate in become
10:14an honors Ambassador for next year talk
10:17with us more about that process and
10:19finally Institute of Leadership
10:21Excellence as mentioned before is an
10:23option for honors credit it's a good
10:25onewe summer class and it also provides
10:28you a certificate that you completed a
10:30leadership course which sometimes is
10:32very nice to add to those resumés we
10:34have information on all of this and a
10:36lot more on our general honors website
10:39and I encourage you to look at that um
10:41throughout the
10:43semesters so this is a short video just
10:45to kind of give you a quick glance of
10:47what is required for honors and how to
10:49participate and stay active we encourage
10:52you to meet with your major advisor so
10:55whoever is your major advisor not honors
10:57advisor to make sure that you're staying
11:00on track for what you need for your
11:01degree after you meet with them if you
11:04have additional questions about honors
11:06you can also come and see us but you're
11:08not required to see us again before
11:10registration starts we do advise that
11:13you don't wait until the last minute to
11:14schedule your advising appointments go
11:17ahead and start scheduling those and and
11:19that way you don't get stuck waiting for
11:21a long time if your advisor's schedule
11:23fills up keep an eye on Pipeline for any
11:26holds that might prevent you from
11:27registering you get a parking ticket or
11:30owe a fine at the library or things like
11:32that you may not be able to register and
11:34it may take a little bit for that to
11:36clear once registration opens so make
11:38sure that all of those things are taken
11:40care of if you get approved through the
11:42honors process which we'll do once we
11:44review your materials then you will be
11:46able to register either at 10: a.m. at
11:49junior or senior or 11:00 a. for
11:52freshman and sophomores at that point
11:54registration opens and from that point
11:57forward you can go ahead and try to grab
11:59grab your classes you'll get an email
12:01from us to confirm that you have been
12:03approved or if you have any questions
12:05please reach out to your honors
12:09advisor the final step to be reviewed
12:11for early registration with honors is to
12:13complete the form found through these
12:15links either use the QR code or the tiny
12:18URL to fill out the honors early
12:21registration approval form if this is
12:24your first time attending an honors
12:25advising Workshop or watching the video
12:28please mark that you have not attended a
12:30workshop before and that will open up
12:32additional questions so we can review if
12:34you have honors credit for AP Governor
12:36school or IB credit if the form is not
12:39working for you please send us an email
12:41to let us know and we can help you
12:43resolve that issue
