0:03In the vast endless forest, another
0:05ordinary day had begun for Grasshopper,
0:08who loved nothing more than lazing
0:10around and singing. Do me foul
0:16la. I'll sleep through it all. Hold that
0:21dough.
0:23Nice. It works. My belly is full. I'm
0:26feeling fine. Let the workers [music]
0:29work while I reclim.
0:32[laughter]
0:34[screaming]
0:35>> Enough already. Shut it. Do I really
0:38have to wake up to that awful voice of
0:40yours every single day? Go screech on
0:42another branch.
0:44>> You know, if you understood even the
0:46tiniest bit about art, you wouldn't be
0:47so grumpy all the time.
0:50>> My head's going to explode.
0:52>> In case you didn't know, this is called
0:55an outdoor concert.
1:01Off goes the grasshopper hopping through
1:03the forest. [music] The forest. Through
1:06the for. Ah.
1:11Oh, it's the ants. Here they come again.
1:17Work, work, work. What do you guys even
1:19get out of it?
1:21>> Ah, this is so hard.
1:23>> What's all this? Are you migrating this
1:26time? No.
1:27>> Are we heading into an ice age or
1:29something? [laughter]
1:31>> No.
1:32>> Why put yourself through all that? Who
1:34carries a load that heavy? Look at them.
1:37They're building muscles at their age
1:39instead of playing ball. [laughter]
1:41Or is there some kind of disaster on the
1:44way? Is something terrible going to
1:45happen?
1:46>> There's no disaster. We're carrying all
1:48this because we're trying to stay alive.
1:51I need patience.
1:53>> Patience, [music] of course. No one has
1:55patience like you ants. You're already
1:58bent double at such a young age.
2:01>> We're gathering food so we won't go
2:03hungry during the winter. Is that a good
2:06enough answer for you? Happy now?
2:08>> Oh, come on. Live a little. Let's see
2:12how long until winter.
2:14Whoa. We've got ages.
2:19>> Winter will be here before you know it.
2:22Don't listen to him. [music]
2:24Eat, drink, sleep. His whole life is
2:28completely empty.
2:32Eat, drink, sleep. Your life's on
2:35repeat. That's an amazing song lyric. Do
2:38you realize that? Written by the poet
2:42Ant.
2:43>> We need to find you a stage name.
2:45Anthony Rhyme. Clap clap clap. Perfect.
2:49Maybe there's an artist hidden somewhere
2:51deep inside you. You could be lazing
2:54around all day enjoying the sunshine
2:56with songs [music] and poems and instead
2:59look what you're putting yourselves
3:01through.
3:01>> The artist inside me says, "What are you
3:04going to do when the sun disappears and
3:06the weather [music] turns cold?" Huh?
3:10>> We'll have fun just like we always do.
3:13How else are you supposed to live?
3:16>> You just keep waving those arms. When
3:19winter comes, you'll have nothing but
3:21rocks to eat. Let me tell you something.
3:22You should worry about things when the
3:24time comes. Carpedium. That's all I'm
3:27saying. Otherwise, you'll never get to
3:30enjoy life.
3:32>> Give me a hand with this.
3:34>> Huh? What?
3:35>> This one. Come on. Hate me.
3:38>> Well, I'm an artist, you know. I need my
3:40hands. What if that seed damages them or
3:42something?
3:44>> All right. All right. Lucky you. I'll
3:47grab the other end. It's only a seed.
3:50How can you not carry it? What did you
3:52build all those muscles for?
3:53Unbelievable.
3:56>> Oh, thanks. Thanks a lot.
4:02>> Do me. Eat, drink, sleep. La,
4:08a life on repeat.
4:11>> Oh, I can't take it anymore. Fo, please
4:15go sing somewhere else. You're giving me
4:18a headache.
4:20This forest has no appreciation for the
4:22arts. I'm taking my violin and moving to
4:25another forest. You'll miss my voice
4:27when I'm gone.
4:29>> Oh, if
4:32>> they have no appreciation for me.
4:37Is this any way to treat a brilliant
4:39artist like me?
4:49Oh no.
4:54[screaming]
5:00Phew. What just happened? Where did that
5:02chicken come from all of a sudden?
5:07>> What's the big deal? You almost became
5:09someone's lunch because you're so slow.
5:13>> Thank you.
5:16Come on, get inside. The queen is
5:18calling for you. [music]
5:22>> As the hot summer days rolled on, the
5:25ants kept working up a sweat, carrying
5:28[music] food back to their nest every
5:30single day.
5:33Eventually, the autumn days, when the
5:36leaves turned yellow and the air grew
5:38colder, came and went as well.
5:43Then at last, the bitter winter came
5:46knocking at their door.
5:49>> It's so cold.
5:52Nobody out there is going hungry, right?
5:55>> Not if they had any sense.
5:58>> The bears gathered food for themselves,
6:00too, right? The smart bears did. Bears
6:05sleep through the whole winter anyway.
6:10Meanwhile, the grasshopper hadn't had a
6:12single bite to eat in days
6:17because all those fresh plants and tasty
6:20roots were now buried beneath the snow.
6:25Man, it's freezing. My hands are so
6:28cold. Let me play my violin for a bit
6:30and warm myself up.
6:37S
6:39do. No. No. I can't play the violin or
6:43sing with these frozen hands.
6:46I'm starving. My stomach is completely
6:49empty.
6:53And I'm all out of grape juice.
6:57If only it were summer right now.
7:09>> [music]
7:12>> If I don't find some food soon, I'm
7:14going to freeze in this terrible winter.
7:17A few grapes. Even a tiny piece of
7:19walnut would be more than enough. I
7:22can't go to the ants. They definitely
7:24[music] slam the door in my face.
7:28The crows. They must have something
7:30stashed away somewhere.
7:35>> [gasps and sighs]
7:36>> Wow, I'm really out of shape.
7:38>> 90 hazelnuts,
7:4140 walnuts,
7:4350 dried figs.
7:46>> Oo,
7:47that'll last us all winter, right,
7:50sister?
7:51>> Of course it will. More than enough.
7:54Hey, make sure you hide it well. We
7:56don't want anyone stealing it. Anyone
7:59tries to steal it, I'll peck him.
8:04>> Hi guys.
8:06>> What happened? Doi,
8:07>> your antenna drooping from hunger?
8:10>> Yeah, I guess so. Um, I'm kind of
8:13hungry. Could I maybe have one or two
8:16hazelnuts?
8:17>> No way. We've barely got enough for
8:19ourselves.
8:22>> Okay. Okay. Just one hazelnut. One teeny
8:25tiny little one. Give me one of the
8:27small ones right there. That one. You
8:29know that one.
8:37>> Don't you animals have any heart?
8:39Whatever happened to animal decency?
8:42>> Be glad your eyes are still where they
8:44belong. Now quiet. Oh, Peckham, I swear.
8:49Shoo. Shoo.
8:51>> Just look at me. I come to your door
8:53starving and you turn me away like that.
8:56Some big brothers you are and they call
8:59crows wise.
9:00>> You drove us crazy all summer and now
9:03you won't leave us alone in winter
9:05either. You should have saved up WHEN
9:07YOU HAD THE CHANCE.
9:08>> I hope no one ever has to depend on you.
9:11Shame on you.
9:15What did he just say to me? He can't
9:17even carry a tune. He can't call a
9:20single note in key. And now he's giving
9:22me a music lesson.
9:26Oh, my favorite rabbit. What are you up
9:28to?
9:29>> What do you want?
9:30>> Come on. Do you really think I'm that
9:32kind of guy?
9:33>> Yeah.
9:33>> You know how much I like you.
9:35>> I don't know.
9:36>> I mean, I know how much you love
9:38carrots.
9:39>> Yeah, I do.
9:41>> And I'm sure you've got plenty of them
9:43back at your burrow.
9:44>> Get to the point.
9:46>> Come on, just give me a little. Look at
9:48me. I'm starving. Before you ask me for
9:51[music] carrots, maybe remember how you
9:53used to make fun of me.
9:55>> What? That's a total lie. What did I
9:58say?
9:59>> You said you work this hard and you're
10:01still chubby. Well, these carrots are
10:04barely enough for this chubby bunny. Go
10:06knock on someone else's door.
10:08>> But come on, sis. That's not fair.
10:11>> Go on, Shoo. Shoo.
10:14>> Nobody in this forest has any empathy.
10:18You wouldn't abandon me too, would you?
10:21My precious violin. Even if I could chew
10:25you up, I'd never eat you. I could never
10:28do that to you. Grasshopper starving.
10:31[music and singing]
10:32Diddly dumb. Not a crumb to Huh? Just
10:37what I needed.
10:40Uncle Badger, open up. I'm freezing out
10:43here.
10:45>> Yeah. What do you want? My deepest
10:47respects, uncle. Uh, sorry to bother
10:50you, but I've got a little problem. This
10:53problem?
10:55>> Yeah. Yeah, I heard you. What am I
10:57supposed to do about it?
10:59>> I was just [music] thinking maybe you
11:00had a bite or two to spare.
11:02>> Nip.
11:02>> Not even a raisin.
11:06>> Nip.
11:06>> Not even a peanut.
11:08>> Nip.
11:14Okay. Okay. Don't hit me.
11:16>> Boy, you really don't take a hint, DO
11:19YOU?
11:19>> THEN WHY ARE YOU LYING? You've got a
11:21whole bunch of raisins hanging around
11:23your neck. Just give me one. Would it
11:25kill you?
11:26>> You drive me crazy. I couldn't sleep in
11:30my own den all summer because of all
11:32your racket. Now quit bothering me and
11:36go find somewhere to hide from the cold.
11:39But if you've got something to pay me
11:42with, maybe I could find you a little
11:46something. Got anything valuable?
11:49>> Something valuable? Nope. Nothing. I
11:52swear.
11:52>> Oh, you do. I can see something in your
11:57hands.
11:57>> Uh, my violin. Oh, this old thing isn't
12:01good enough for you. It's ancient.
12:04Practically falling apart.
12:06>> Give me that. Let me see. I can use the
12:09strings. I'll burn the rest. In exchange
12:13for this,
12:15I'll give you the crumbs left inside
12:17[music] this hazelnut shell.
12:19>> What?
12:20>> Take it or leave it. That's how I do
12:23business.
12:24>> Wait, can I at least stay here for one
12:27night?
12:28>> Sweetheart, lodging isn't free.
12:31>> How much?
12:32>> One violin.
12:35>> [laughter]
12:36>> Oh, just shut the door already.
12:40That whole Badger family is stingy.
12:42Every last one of them.
12:45I'd never give you to them.
12:49Ouch.
12:53Am I seeing things? The buffet came
12:55right to me.
12:59Hey, what you got there? Yeah, those
13:02those
13:04>> [music]
13:05>> Whoa. What do you think you're doing?
13:10Stay back. Stay back. It's all ice here.
13:14One good whack and crack. The ice breaks
13:19and splash in. You go.
13:23>> Now watch this.
13:25Whoa.
13:27>> Stay away from me. No way. I'm sharing.
13:31Not a chance. I worked hard for all
13:34this.
13:35>> Wait, don't run away. Why is this so
13:37slippery? Just one blackberry. Come on,
13:40just one.
13:42>> No way.
13:44>> Little Martin, little Martin, could you
13:47spare an apple?
13:49>> No, you can't. No, you can't. All of
13:54this is mine.
13:56Ha,
13:57>> I've got this now. I'm skating.
14:02Ouch.
14:04>> Zero points for figure skating.
14:07[laughter]
14:09Sweet dreams.
14:12I just need one bite.
14:18>> Grasshopper had knocked on almost every
14:21door in the forest, but every time the
14:25door was shut right in his face. Now he
14:28had only one option left. Actually, I
14:32could ask that ant for some food. I did
14:34help them before. Wait a second.
14:43>> A few days later, Grasshopper had grown
14:46so weak from hunger and the bone
14:49chilling cold that he could barely walk
14:52anymore.
14:54So much for my pride. I'm going to the
14:57ants.
15:02Hello. Could you please open the door?
15:06>> Who is it?
15:09>> Re.
15:11>> Oh no, he fainted. Who are you talking
15:14to? Who needs help?
15:16>> Grasshopper.
15:18>> Bring them inside [music] at once. We
15:20should never turn away someone who comes
15:22to our door asking for help.
15:26So, the queen ant and the other ants
15:29opened the door. There they found
15:31Grasshopper lying unconscious in the
15:34snow, overcome by hunger and the
15:37freezing cold.
15:38>> Where am I? Am I dead?
15:40>> Your Majesty, he's awake. He's awake.
15:43>> Oh, you guys are actually having fun in
15:47here.
15:48Thank you so much, [music] your majesty.
15:50You saved my life. I can't thank you
15:53enough. Eat up, grasshopper. You've
15:56gotten so thin.
16:01>> Only those who work hard can stay here,
16:04Grasshopper.
16:06Here.
16:07>> So, I guess that's my cue to hit the
16:10road.
16:10>> Then play for us.
16:26That was really unfair to you.
16:28>> Well, at least you realize it now.
16:30>> Yeah, I realize that now. You were
16:32trying to warn me about days like these,
16:34but I didn't take you seriously.
16:36>> I would have loved to spend the whole
16:38summer having fun, too. Of course.
16:40[laughter]
16:40But if you hadn't been lazing around,
16:43you wouldn't have been there to save me
16:44from the hen.
16:46>> Well, when you put it that way,
16:48>> I'm kidding.
16:49>> I really am sorry. These past few days
16:52have been one disaster after another.
16:54>> Don't be so hard on yourself. I think
16:57you've learned your lesson.
16:58>> Of course I did. I might even write a
17:00song for you. I've already got a few
17:02ideas.
17:03>> Please make it instrumental.
17:06>> And why is that? Don't tell me you don't
17:08like my voice.
17:10La. [crying]
17:12>> Can we do something else?
17:13>> Want to go raid Badger's house?
17:15>> What did that poor old guy ever do to
17:18you? A few weeks later, it was time for
17:21the lazy grasshopper to leave.
17:25>> Thank you, every single one of you.
17:28>> And next winter, maybe we'll come stay
17:30with you. [laughter]
17:33>> Well, sure. Of course. I'll get my place
17:36ready and have you all over sometime. I
17:39should probably get going now. By the
17:42way, isn't Aunt coming to say goodbye?
17:44Just then, a thunderous crack rang out
17:47through the entire forest.
17:49>> Oh no. No. Run. Everybody get inside.
17:54>> Wa. What's going on?
17:56>> A huge a really huge chip of ice. It
18:01It's coming this way.
18:11Lock the doors.
18:15Nobody run. Ant, get out of the way.
18:18>> Grasshopper, what are you doing? Run.
18:20>> These legs aren't just for rescuing you.
18:23And here's my farewell song for you. Ha.
18:32>> We're safe. [cheering]
18:33Yay. Away. Bravo. You're amazing.
18:39>> No, it can't be.
18:42Grasshopper.
18:45>> What? You thought you were finally rid
18:47of my songs? Not a chance. I've still
18:49got a whole lot more songs to write.
18:52[laughter]
18:57>> Here you go, superstar.
18:59>> What's this?
19:00>> Just a little gift.
19:03[laughter]
19:04>> I actually like the songs you write.
19:07>> Thank you. It was getting hard to
19:09remember all my songs. Now I can write
19:11them down.
19:12>> And don't you dare get lazy, okay? Write
19:15every single one of those songs.
19:17>> I've learned my lesson, Mr. [music]
19:19Anthony Rhyme. But you guys better
19:22remember to have some fun once in a
19:23while.
19:29>> Come back soon.
19:32From that day on, Grasshopper [music]
19:34used not only his songs, but also the
19:38strength in his legs to help his
19:40friends. [laughter]
19:41Because if hard work is one of life's
19:44rules, then helping one another is the
19:47sweetest song of the heart. Off goes the
19:50grasshopper. Hopping through the forest.
19:53The forest. Through the forest. Hop
19:56along, grasshopper. Jump along,
19:58grasshopper. My silly little
20:00grasshopper. Bitty bitty bitty bitty
20:02grasshopper.
20:06[laughter]
