1:30fred

1:31in 1966 the fox family moved to surrey

1:34british columbia

1:35two years later they moved to port

1:38coquitlam

1:39a city a little east of vancouver it was

1:41a great place to grow up the kids picked

1:43blueberries in the summers to earn

1:45spending money but terry

1:46still made time for sports

1:51terry especially loved basketball but he

1:53wasn't great at first for one thing he

1:55was shorter than most of the other

1:57players

1:57but he tried hard and practiced with his

1:59friend doug terry went from being the

2:02worst player on his school's team

2:03in eighth grade eight to one of the best

2:06by grade 10. in grade 12 terry and doug

2:09shared their school's athlete of the

2:11year award

2:12that fox guy sure is small but he's one

2:15of the best on defense

2:17yeah he never gives up good hustle fox

2:20in september 1976 terry started

2:23university

2:24he thought he might like to be a high

2:26school gym teacher of course

2:28terry tried out for the university

2:29basketball team he made it too

2:32there were other players who had more

2:34talent but none worked harder than

2:36terry a few months later

2:39terry felt pain in his right knee he

2:42thought it was from playing too much

2:43basketball and ignored it

2:45but by early march 1977 the pain was

2:48unbearable doctors quickly discovered a

2:51type of cancer called

2:52osteogenic sarcoma in terry's knee

2:56they would have to amputate most of his

2:58leg right away

2:59that would make sure they got all the

3:00cancer cells before they could spread to

3:02other parts of his body

3:04terry cried when he learned the news i'm

3:06so sorry terry

3:08the night before terry's operation his

3:11high school basketball coach dropped by

3:13he brought terry an article about a

3:15runner who'd also lost a leg above the

3:17knee and then gone on to run a marathon

3:20a 42 kilometer long race terry wanted to

3:23prove that losing his leg wouldn't stop

3:25him

3:26but running one marathon wasn't enough

3:29if he can run with one leg

3:30so can i i know you've got the

3:33determination

3:35three weeks after terry's leg was

3:37amputated he tried walking on a

3:39prosthetic

3:40or artificial leg the stump at the end

3:43of his right leg fit into a bucket at

3:44the top of the metal leg

3:46terry found using the new leg really

3:48tough but he kept trying

3:51if i can just make it to that doorway

3:53that's even farther than yesterday

3:55keep it up terry everyone's so brave

3:59what can i do to help meanwhile terry

4:02was taking chemotherapy to destroy any

4:04cancer cell still in his body

4:06the drugs he was given at the cancer

4:08clinic made him feel sick

4:09they also made his hair fall it there

4:12were many other patients at the clinic

4:14some of them were in pain or died terry

4:16wanted to do something for him he

4:18decided to raise money for cancer

4:20research

4:22i see that kid out here every day

4:25as soon as he was strong enough terry

4:27was back playing sports

4:28he was great at wheelchair basketball

4:30then in february 1979 terry began trying

4:34to run

4:35he had to learn to take two steps with

4:37his left leg to give his artificial leg

4:39time to swing forward

4:40at first he could only cover short

4:42distances

4:44terry trained longer and longer

4:46distances

4:47every day soon his left foot and right

4:50stump were covered in blisters and sores

4:53sometimes they'd start bleeding but he

4:55was still thinking about the marathon

4:57runner with one leg

4:59when most runners finish a marathon they

5:02need lots of time after to recover

5:04not terry he was determined to run a

5:06marathon every single day until he made

5:09it all the way across the country

5:13it's eight thousand five hundred thirty

5:15kilometers doug

5:16i think i can run that what all the way

5:19across

5:20canada the canadian cancer

5:24society agreed to support terry's run

5:26terry wrote letters to companies asking

5:28for their help too

5:30the businesses offered him running shoes

5:32money food

5:33even a camper van and my plan is to run

5:36across canada to raise money for cancer

5:39research

5:40i'm not a dreamer but i believe in

5:42miracles i have to

5:44terry asked his friend doug to drive the

5:46van not only did

5:48doug know a lot about running and

5:50dealing with injuries but terry knew he

5:52could depend on him

5:53that would be important in the months

5:55ahead

5:57i still can't believe they gave you a

5:59van it's going to be home sweet home for

6:02a while

6:04on april 12 1980 terry dipped his

6:07artificial leg in the cold gray waters

6:09of the harbor in saint john's

6:11newfoundland

6:12then he climbed the steep gravel hill to

6:14the road the marathon of hope had

6:16started

6:18do you really believe you can run all

6:20the way across canada

6:21you bet and during the run i'm going to

6:24raise money to help fight cancer

6:28it was so nice to have a hot shower last

6:30night and

6:31sleep in a real bed too

6:35as terry ran across newfoundland people

6:37gave him donations as well as meals and

6:39sometimes even a place to stay overnight

6:42each morning terry and doug got up early

6:44and were on the road around 4 30 a.m

6:47at the end of the day terry carefully

6:49marked where he had stopped with a rock

6:51when he started running again the next

6:53morning terry would touch the marker

6:57i can't see a thing terry ran through

7:00strong winds blazing

7:02sun and even a blizzard but he kept

7:04going

7:05terry ran across nova scotia and prince

7:07edward island

7:08whoa that was close many people still

7:12hadn't heard about the marathon of hope

7:14cars and trucks honked at him and

7:16sometimes even tried to get him off the

7:18road

7:21this van totally stinks it's doug's

7:24armpits

7:25no way it's terry's socks in new

7:28brunswick

7:29terry's brother daryl joined them it was

7:32fun to have more company

7:33where is everyone today in some towns

7:36lots of people gave donations but in

7:39others people still didn't know about

7:40terry's run at all

7:42how is he ever going to reach his goal

7:44of raising one dollar for

7:45every canadian as terry crossed from

7:49quebec into ontario news of the marathon

7:52of hope was spreading

7:53people lined the roads to cheer him on

7:55sometimes waiting

7:57hours they pressed money into terry's

7:59hands and thrust bills at daryl and doug

8:01they even gave donations to his police

8:04escort

8:04on july first terry stood on his

8:07artificial leg and used his left leg to

8:09complete the ceremonial kickoff for a

8:11canadian football league exhibition game

8:13in ottawa

8:14the crowd gave him a standing ovation

8:20this is so great it's finally happening

8:23go

8:23terry look it's him cancer has given me

8:27the courage

8:28and a sense of purpose i've never had

8:30before but you don't have to wait until

8:33you lose a leg to find out what you're

8:35really made of you can start now

8:38the sun was blazing hot when terry ran

8:40up to a huge rally at toronto city hall

8:43on july 11.

8:44during that one day terry raised about a

8:46hundred thousand dollars and got to meet

8:48one of his heroes

8:50hockey star daryl sittler

8:56how's the water greg perfect just like

8:59this whole

9:00day terry's run exhausted him

9:03but he still made time to meet people

9:05along his route kids especially

9:07inspired terry in terrace bay ontario he

9:10met up with 10 year old greg

9:12scott like terry greg loved sports and

9:15had lost a leg to bone cancer

9:17he rode his bike behind terry for almost

9:1910 kilometers and later they had funded

9:21a nearby lake

9:22inspired terry was more determined than

9:25ever to help

9:28terry continued to run through ontario

9:30by september 1st

9:31he was outside thunder bay he got up

9:34early as usual and began his run

9:37but soon terry started to cough he felt

9:39so bad that he had to lie down in the

9:41van

9:42the coughing stopped but terry still

9:44felt a strong pain in his neck and chest

9:47so he did what he always did when he was

9:49hurting he kept running

9:51you can make it don't give up terry i

9:54need to make it to the van

9:55just one more pull

10:00i just can't keep going i need to see a

10:02doctor

10:03oh no i'll go call for help

10:07but terry quickly realized something was

10:09very wrong he had to stop

10:11soon he was on his way to the hospital

10:13terry had been running for 143 days and

10:16had covered

10:175 373 kilometers or nearly two-thirds of

10:21his route across canada

10:23we've got to go home all i can say is

10:25that if there is

10:26any way i can get out there and finish i

10:29will

10:30doctors gave terry the diagnosis he

10:32feared the cancer in his knee had spread

10:34to his lungs

10:35he was too sick to keep running terry's

10:38marathon of hope was over

10:40terry flew back to vancouver and went

10:42directly to the hospital to start

10:44chemotherapy again

10:45he was determined to accept the cancer

10:48as just another phase in his life

10:51you've done a lot of good for people

10:53terry even though i'm not running

10:55anymore we still have to try and find a

10:57cure for cancer

10:58other people should go ahead and try to

11:00do their own thing now

11:02on september 18 1980 terry was made a

11:06companion of the order of canada

11:32raising one dollar for every canadian

11:34came true

11:35but the drugs terry was taking to fight
