0:10Ability!

0:11Motivation!

0:13Attitude!

0:14In order to be a successful student,

0:16you must have all three.

0:18Lou Holtz, former American football player and coach,

0:21once said that,

0:22“ABILITY is what you’re capable of doing,

0:25MOTIVATION determines what you do,

0:27and ATTITUDE determines how well you do it.”

0:29Your PASS Instructors and Ambassadors

0:32couldn’t agree more with this statement.

0:34Let’s look at each one of these traits and how they apply to you.

0:38ABILITY!

0:39If ability is what you are capable of doing,

0:42then obviously you are capable of completing college work

0:45because you have been accepted to Austin Peay State University.

0:49This means you have met the standards to be admitted into school

0:52and we feel you have what it takes to be a successful student.

0:56We wouldn’t accept you into our school if we didn’t think you could engage in classes,

1:00make good grades, and go on to graduate with a degree.

1:04Here are six critical abilities that are essential for student success:

1:09Think analytically,

1:11express ideas through writing,

1:13exchange ideas effectively through oral communication,

1:17innovate,

1:18work independently and with a group,

1:20and accept and act on criticism.

1:23This doesn’t mean you have to be a super hero!

1:26We all have strengths and weaknesses.

1:28For example, some abilities make completing tasks feel almost effortless.

1:33They vary with everyone,

1:35but abilities can be developed and improved over time.

1:39If you don’t have a natural ability for math,

1:41you can always work hard and develop your skills,

1:44or at least improve on what you already know about math.

1:47Knowing your academic ability is important.

1:50If you recognize areas for improvement in your abilities,

1:53you have help here at Austin Peay.

1:56We offer peer-tutoring at the Academic Support Center

1:59and writing assistance at the Writing Center,

2:02and we have the PASS class designed to teach you important skills to be a successful student.

2:07MOTIVATION!

2:09…it’s why you do it!

2:10This is the internal drive that helps you carry out your abilities.

2:14Motivation consists of goals,

2:16beliefs, perceptions and expectations that give you energy and direction.

2:22“We must each generate motivation within ourselves; no one can give us motivation.

2:28You can teach yourself to succeed through motivation by employing five tools:

2:33Making small gains!

2:35In order to stay motivated, it is important to focus on your strengths and stay positive.

2:40Setting small, achievable goals will benefit you in the long run.

2:45Instead of focusing on getting an “A” in the class,

2:48set several goals throughout the semester that will help you earn the grade you want.

2:52For example, one of your goals the first week of class might be to attend class each day.

2:57Another goal might be to turn in the work on time.

3:01Setting the goals and achieving them each week will help you stay motivated and positive.

3:07Visualization!

3:08Instead of dwelling on the difficulty of a task, think of all the positive outcomes of completing a task well.

3:14If you focus your thoughts on achieving a positive outcome, you are more likely to see that result.

3:20Flexibility!

3:22Don’t panic if something doesn’t work out exactly as you planned.

3:25These are goals you set yourself, so you have the ability to adjust them.

3:29It may take some trial and error to figure out what you can accomplish in a day or a week,

3:34and that’s perfectly normal.

3:36Being flexible will reduce your stress and make you more motivated.

3:40Refusing to quit!

3:42If you’re struggling to complete a task,

3:44break it up into smaller pieces that are easier to manage.

3:48That way, you will no longer feel overwhelmed.

3:50If you quit, you guarantee that you will not succeed.

3:54Taking responsibility!

3:56If you didn’t get a good grade,

3:58look at your study or research habits and how you can improve them in the future.

4:02If you did get a good grade,

4:04give yourself the credit.

4:05You deserve it!

4:08ATTITUDE!

4:09It’s how you feel and how you approach a task.

4:12It is the way you view the world around you and choose to see it,

4:16either positively or negatively.

4:19To the degree that you can maintain a positive attitude about yourself,

4:23others, and the circumstances you find yourself in,

4:26you will see yourself achieving greater and greater things.

4:30Believing that you can do something is just as important as your ability to do it.

4:35A study by Dr. Charles Snyder concluded that

4:38“the level of hope among first-year college students

4:42was a better predictor of academic success than grades or test scores.”

4:47“There is a direct relationship between hope and success.”

4:50A positive attitude is the only way to yield positive results.

4:55Ability, Motivation, and Attitude are all essential to success.

5:00Here are some questions you can ask yourself:

5:03Ability:

5:05What could you achieve if you just took your skills to the next level beyond where they are right now?

5:10How would improving your skills improve your success?

5:14Motivation:

5:15What motivates you?

5:17What could you do to find a higher level of motivation?

5:20What would happen if you became super motivated for the next period of your life?

5:25What great things would happen?

5:27Attitude:

5:28Are you more of an optimist or a pessimist?

5:31What about when things go wrong?

5:33What if you just chose to have an incredible attitude?

5:37What would be the ramifications?

5:40Booker T. Washington said,

5:42"The world cares very little about what a man or woman knows;

5:45it is what a man or woman is able to do that counts."

5:50This is so true.

5:52People will judge you on what you accomplish, not what you know or what you talk about.

5:57In fact, if you know a lot or talk a lot but do not accomplish anything, people will wonder what happened.

6:04So the question is whether or not you will take the actions necessary to deliver on your potential.

6:11To do so, you will need to focus in on the three legs of the stool of success:

6:15Your ability, your motivation, and your attitude.

6:19Take some time this week to give serious thought to these three areas.

6:23Your success depends on it!
