Intro

0:00in today's video I'm going to teach you

0:02some common English words that native

0:05speakers use every day but that most of

0:08my students don't actually

0:11know now if you want to expand your

0:14vocabulary and you want to understand

0:17native speakers then watch this video

0:19because the words we're going to learn

0:21today are really going to help you now

0:24the first word I want to talk about is

Commute

0:28commute

0:31commute commute can be a verb it could

0:34also be a

0:36noun a commute is going from home to

0:41school or from home to work we say

0:44that's your

0:46commute it's your trip it's your journey

0:49from home to school or work you can also

0:53use it as a verb you commute I commute

0:58you commute he commute mutes to

1:02work now if you want to use it in a

1:05sentence you could say I commute to work

1:09every Monday that's a verb or he has a

1:13long commute to work that's a

1:18noun somebody who commutes is a

1:23commuter

1:25commuter very common word the next word

1:28on our list is also Al related to

1:32commuting and that's

1:34detour

1:37detour if you take a detour it means you

1:41don't go in the direction or route that

1:45you originally planned but you go around

1:49maybe something is preventing you from

1:51reaching your goal so you have to go a

1:53different way maybe it takes longer for

1:57example on my way to work

2:00there was a construction site on the

2:03road so I had to take a detour and go

2:07another way we say taking a detour so

2:12you can commute to work by car by Train

2:16by bus but you can also commute on foot

2:21and if you're walking we say you are a

2:25pedestrian

Pedestrian

2:27pedestrian a pedestrian is somebody who

2:31walks so you might see a sign that says

2:34pedestrians

2:36only no cars only

2:39pedestrians you're only allowed to walk

2:42in this area obviously we can use the

2:44verb to walk but if you want to be a bit

2:47more specific we can say you are taking

2:50a

2:51stroll now taking a stroll is different

2:54from commuting commuting is going to

Stroll

2:58work going to school you have a clear

3:01purpose you have a clear destination but

3:04taking a stroll means going for a walk

3:07that's normally relaxed or leisurely

3:11you're not going very fast you're

3:13enjoying the park you're enjoying the

3:16scenery the nature you're taking a

3:19stroll you can say you're going for a

3:21stroll you're taking a stroll or you

3:25could actually use it as a verb to

3:28stroll for example strolled in the park

3:31now it sounds a bit more natural to say

3:34you're taking a stroll but you might

3:36also say you're strolling around which

3:40means again you're walking around with

3:43no real destination you're enjoying your

3:46slow leisurely walk your stroll the next

3:50word on our list is the verb to hum to

3:54hum very common word and if you're

3:59taking a stroll or maybe you're in the

4:02shower and you hum it means you sing but

4:06you don't open your mouth you're

4:10humming humming very common word lots of

4:13students don't know this one another

4:17word that I see students not knowing is

4:22frown

4:24frown when we're happy we

4:27smile when we're sad

4:30we

4:32frown happy smile sad

4:37frown now frown can be a verb to frown I

4:42frown you frown he she it

4:45frowns or you can also use it as a noun

4:49for example it's better to have a smile

4:52on your face than it is to have a frown

4:55on your face okay before we continue the

4:58video make sure to leave a like if

4:59you're finding it useful let me know in

5:02the comments if you've heard these words

5:05if you knew what they meant and of

5:20description below if you want to learn

5:22more about how I can help you improve

5:25your English now let's get back into the

5:27lesson and look at the next word on our

5:30list which is actually another

To gaze

5:33verb to

5:35gaze to

5:36gaze when you gaze at something it means

5:40you look at it you look at it with Focus

5:44you pay attention to it you gaze at it

5:48and normally it might be in the distance

5:51for example I gazed at the beautiful

5:55sunset or he gazed at the mountain

6:00in the distance to gaze very common word

6:05I use it quite often you'll hear it all

6:07the time but lots of my students don't

6:10know this one either now I want to teach

6:12you two words and I want to teach you

Blink/wink

6:16the difference between them blink and

6:20wink what's the difference between blink

6:23and wink a lot of students don't know

6:26this but when you blink

6:30you close both your

6:33eyes you're blinking it's what we do

6:37without even thinking it's automatic now

6:40when you

6:41wink you close one

6:44eye you're

6:46winking you're just Closing one eye so

6:49blinking is when you close two eyes and

6:53winking is when you close one eye now

6:57the next word I want to teach you is is

Lethargic

7:01lethargic

7:03lethargic after you've had a long day at

7:06work at school wherever and you feel

7:16energy for example I need a coffee in

7:20the

7:21morning because I feel lethargic when I

7:23wake up

7:26learic lethargic it's a a synonym of

7:31tired you could also say you feel

7:41medication for example some

7:44medication makes you drowsy it makes you

7:48sleepy you could also say

7:51fatigued fatigued means

7:54tired and

7:57exhausted exhausted means very

8:01tired if you've had a long day at work

8:04and you've been working hard you could

8:06say you have been

Diligent

8:09diligent

8:10diligent when somebody is diligent it

8:13means they work hard they do their work

8:18they're very hardworking they have a

8:19good work ethic we say they're

8:23diligent for example she is a diligent

8:27worker she completes everything on time

8:31she's

8:32diligent now when somebody is good at

8:35something we could also say they are

Proficient

8:38proficient at it proficient proficient

8:43for example you can be proficient at a

8:46language like English after you've

8:48watched my videos I'm sure you will be

8:50proficient you could also be proficient

8:53at an

8:54instrument like playing

9:00just means you're good at something

9:02you're

9:03proficient

9:06proficient if you really enjoy doing

9:09something you could say you are keen on

To be keen on something

9:13it you are

9:15Keen when you are Keen to do something

9:17it means you are eager you really want

9:20to do it for example I am Keen to learn

9:26English or I am keen on on cooking it

9:31means I really like cooking I really

9:33like learning English I'm keen on it now

9:37I want to teach you one more word that

9:41lots of my students don't know but

9:43that's common enough and that word is

9:47plausible

Plausible

9:50plausible plausible is just a synonym of

9:55likely when something is plausible it

9:57means there is a good chance

10:00that it will happen it's plausible for

10:04example it's plausible that it will rain

10:08tomorrow it's likely that it will rain

10:12tomorrow we would say it's

10:15plausible I hope you found this lesson

10:18useful as I said before whenever I teach

10:21students in private classes in my club

10:25or in other situations I'm always a bit

10:28surprised at how many students don't

10:31know these words they are quite common

10:35we use them in everyday situations when

10:38we speak English so I really recommend
