0:09hi guys it's nick welcome or welcome

0:10back to my channel so recently i did a

0:13video on interior design styles as well

0:15as mixing interior design styles and you

0:17guys seem to really really love both of

0:19those videos but what i thought i would

0:20do

0:22is really start to take the different

0:23design styles and kind of drill down

0:25into sort of a buyer's guide that i

0:27think is going to be really practical

0:28for you if you really love the

0:30particular style so in this video i'm

0:32going to be talking about scandinavian

0:33design and how you can decorate

0:35scandinavian in your own home now i'm

0:37going to go through what scandinavian

0:39design is i'm going to give you some

0:40tips on how you can achieve this look in

0:43your own home i'm going to go over where

0:45you can buy scandinavian goods some of

0:47my favorite retailers for buying those

0:48products as well as who the scandinavian

0:51style is for what are the benefits who

0:53is it not for because it's not for

0:54everybody and yeah that's it so let's

0:57get started so what is scandinavian

0:58design well scandinavian design really

1:00started in kind of the 1930s but really

1:02started to take off here in north

1:03america in kind of the mid-century

1:06and it is a design style built around

1:09creating kind of a really cozy and warm

1:11space because in the scandinavian

1:13countries much like where i live in

1:15canada uh winters can be really long uh

1:17they can be really cold they can be

1:19really dark it tends to like get dark

1:21here around 4 p.m so you want to really

1:23maximize the warmth that you can get in

1:24the space and you really want to create

1:26something really cozy and warm that's

1:27going to feel comfortable throughout the

1:29whole winter months so some of the

1:31benefits of scandinavian design are that

1:34it creates a really beautiful warm and

1:36comfortable space

1:37it tends to be really light and airy

1:39it's kind of really great for cool

1:41climates it tends to stick to a really

1:43neutral color palette which we'll touch

1:45on in a minute um and i think that makes

1:47it quite easy for people to mix i mean

1:50you kind of want to make sure that the

1:51tones are sort of working together but i

1:52do find a lot of people find that if

1:54you're sticking to the whites the creams

1:56and the neutrals uh it tends to be

1:58easier than trying to mix really bold

2:00colors that you might see in different

2:02design styles and also a characteristic

2:04of scandinavian design is it tends to be

2:06really simple kind of clean modern

2:08furniture and one of the benefits of

2:10that is it tends to be really easy to

2:12find uh it tends to be quite affordable

2:15and it tends to be

2:16kind of common in a lot of modern retail

2:19stores right now so it tends to be a

2:21really fairly easy design style to put

2:23together okay so who is scandinavian

2:25design not for so i would say it is not

2:28for people that really love color so

2:30like if you are

2:31really eager to put some really bold

2:33cool graphics or different colors or

2:35whatever into your space the

2:37scandinavian design style is probably

2:38not going to work for you you might be

2:40better off with something like a

2:42mid-century modern style if you still

2:43prefer that really modern clean

2:45aesthetic but you just really want those

2:46big big pops of color it's not the

2:48scandinavian design doesn't have any

2:50color in it uh tess tends to really

2:52favor a warm neutral color palette and

2:54so if you really love color it might not

2:55be for you also if you're a person that

2:58really loves like a dark moody space if

3:01you're really looking for something

3:02that's just like really dark and kind of

3:03sexy and whatever it might not be for

3:06you i find that scandinavian tends to be

3:07on the light and airy again we're trying

3:09to maximize the light and that's coming

3:12in so if you're in love with kind of a

3:13really dark moody sexy space uh

3:16scandinavian might not be for you also

3:18if you really love like traditional

3:19design elements if you love to see

3:21um say like furniture pieces with a lot

3:24of ornamentation a lot of detailed work

3:27scandinavian is probably not going to be

3:28for you it typically favors really clean

3:30simple furniture so if you're someone

3:32that prefers more of a traditional style

3:34i have some friends and family that just

3:36really love that design style

3:37scandinavian might not be for you

3:39because it might look a little plain and

3:40maybe a little bit boring it just might

3:41not be your taste so if you prefer that

3:43sort of traditional style i wouldn't

3:44recommend scandinavian okay so let's go

3:46over some tips on how i think you can

3:48achieve this look so first of all my

3:51first tip is to really maximize the

3:53light that comes into the space so you

3:55want to keep those windows open you

3:57don't want really big thick kind of

3:59heavy curtains weighing it down you want

4:00to go for something really light maybe

4:01in a cotton or maybe even bare not

4:04having any curtains at all because again

4:05you're really trying to maximize that

4:07light again these are countries where it

4:09gets dark at four o'clock i don't know

4:11maybe even further north it gets dark

4:12even earlier they might only get a few

4:14hours of sunshine a day you can't

4:16exactly close off the light that you're

4:17getting when you're in these spaces

4:19right so uh you really want to create

4:21that really open

4:22space and so you want to maximize those

4:24windows as much as possible also you

4:26really want to work with artificial

4:27light as well so different light sources

4:29coming from different corners of the

4:31room is just going to really sort of

4:32create that warm space because you

4:34really want to maximize the light that's

4:35in the home so the second tip i have for

4:37you is to use a really light neutral

4:40color palette in the home and the reason

4:42for this again is because we're

4:43maximizing the light that comes into the

4:45space so if you think about what light

4:47bounces off of it bounces off of really

4:50light especially white sort of furniture

4:52pieces and things like that right so it

4:54bounces off that white elements to

4:56basically kind of light up the room this

4:58makes sense right if you have like an

5:00inner room in your home if you paint it

5:02white it's going to feel bigger it's

5:04going to feel lighter than if you paint

5:05like a really dark navy or a dark black

5:08and that's not to say you don't see any

5:09black and scandinavian design you do

5:10because you do see a lot of blacks and

5:12grays that really anchor the space but

5:14you're going to want to see like a lot

5:15of light wood flooring and a lot of

5:17white on the walls and white and cream

5:19furniture so really just think of white

5:21cream taupe it's a really sort of

5:23natural off-whites

5:25even into the beige and kind of those

5:27creamy beiges is what's really going to

5:29work for you in this palette third tip

5:31is to really look at

5:33minimal simple clean furniture so again

5:37not a lot of ornamentation here we're

5:39dealing with really clean simple lines

5:41and that really came in through sort of

5:42the modern design movement that we saw

5:44in the mid 20th century and that is true

5:46for scandinavian design

5:47so you're going to want to see just kind

5:49of really simple shapes really just

5:50clean and modern rather than things that

5:52have a lot of detail work you're looking

5:55for things just really clean and simple

5:57so fourth tip i have for you is to

5:59really layer in these different natural

6:01elements that you see so a lot of

6:03scandinavian design is about bringing

6:04things from the outdoors from nature

6:06into the home so seeing things like uh

6:09wool and cotton and rattan and just like

6:13really warm kind of natural substances

6:15that you see in nature and bringing them

6:17into the home so again so one of the

6:18things that's a real hallmark of

6:20scandinavian design is you actually

6:21don't see a whole lot of carpet which is

6:23kind of interesting because carpet can

6:24feel really warm and cozy but generally

6:27in scandinavian design so you see a lot

6:29of really light neutral wood flooring in

6:31scandinavian design

6:33but if you are going to maybe warm up

6:34the space with more rugs you can

6:36absolutely do that just bring in kind of

6:38really warm natural elements again

6:40sticking with that neutral color palette

6:42tip number five is to use plants in the

6:44home again we're talking about bringing

6:45the outdoors in and so scandinavian

6:47design is a lot about that harmonizing

6:50between the interior and the outside

6:51world and so by bringing plants into the

6:53space you're adding life you're adding a

6:55little bit of color and it just really

6:57works beautifully to bring in those kind

6:58of that greenery uh into a space that is

7:01mostly a really light neutral palette

7:04overall looks really beautiful and

7:05really elegant and just creates that

7:07really warm cozy space tip number six is

7:10going to be that if you are going to use

7:12color um stick to really colors that are

7:15really light in tone so this could be

7:18like blues and pinks and greens but just

7:20really try to stick to lighter colors so

7:22again if you've seen my color palette

7:24video you know all about the color

7:25theory so by using like those really

7:27pale colors uh you're able to kind of

7:29stick to that color palette while adding

7:31a little bit of color here and there

7:33again it's not the scandinavians are

7:35afraid of color i know i'm going to get

7:36some scandinavian in the comment section

7:38they're going to say like we're not

7:38afraid of color i'm not saying you are

7:40i'm saying that if you do stick to kind

7:42of lighter paler tones it's going to

7:45serve you better in your really neutral

7:46color palette and tip number seven is

7:49that if you have a fireplace in your

7:50home

7:51i don't but if you do and you're lucky

7:53to have one really use that as a focal

7:55point so again we're talking about how

7:57to create a really cozy warm nice soft

8:00space so speaking of bringing warmth

8:02into the space nothing will quite do

8:04that like a beautiful gorgeous fireplace

8:06so if you have one really show it off

8:09and just sort of make it a focal point

8:11in your space draw attention to it

8:12because that fireplace is going to

8:14really heat the home so it's obviously

8:16very functional uh but it is going to

8:17provide sort of a warm backdrop for your

8:20space it's just going to make it feel

8:21really cozy and warm now if you do not

8:23have a fireplace like me

8:25well you know what what are things that

8:27we can do one of the best things you can

8:28do is to use candles so candles are a

8:31really neat way of just adding that

8:32little touch of kind of fire into your

8:34space without necessarily having you

8:36know like a full fireplace because not

8:37all of us are lucky enough to have one

8:39okay so those are some tips on how you

8:41can get a scandinavian uh design into

8:44your space now let's talk about some of

8:46my favorite retailers that i think do a

8:47really great job with scandinavian now

8:50the first one

8:51you know i'm going to talk about it

8:52they have a their colors are the swedish

8:55flag so let's be honest it's ikea and

8:57ikea is really really great to shop for

9:00scandinavian design for obviously

9:02because it's a scandinavian retailer and

9:03that's kind of what it's known for but

9:05don't assume that everything in ikea is

9:07scandinavian

9:08i would say as a as a scandinavian

9:10design style there's a lot of really

9:13funky and really detailed things at ikea

9:15that probably wouldn't fit so they tend

9:17to try to cater to all audiences but if

9:19you stick to things that are really

9:20simple in form and really modern which

9:22ikea tends to do

9:24and if you're sticking to really light

9:25neutral colors then you'll be fine

9:27there's things like these beautiful

9:28pendants that you see here um i love

9:31these these are kind of in this rattan

9:32makes perfect sense to be here this

9:34beautiful basket uh having this nestled

9:37in the corner of your apartment or in

9:39your home is really going to give it

9:40that beautiful scandinavian look

9:43some of these lighting fixtures really

9:44will work for you there's just lots of

9:46different scandinavian things that you

9:47can do

9:48these rugs from ikea are beautiful and

9:51will really warm up a scandinavian space

9:53so you can see ikea is a really awesome

9:55option and obviously they're really

9:56affordable as well which is why they're

9:58a solid pick for scandinavian design but

10:00it's not just all about ikea if you're

10:02looking to change it up and you want to

10:04do different retailers of course there

10:05are a few and i'm going to give them to

10:07you now article.com is really great so

10:09they tend to stick mostly with modern

10:11design so again things are really clean

10:13and simple so not for you traditional

10:15folks um but they are really great for

10:18mid-century modern a little bit of boho

10:20but also scandinavian as well so they do

10:22a lot of scandinavian pieces that i

10:24think you should check out at

10:25article.com i also recommend checking

10:27out rove concepts which is similar to

10:29article in that it is an online only

10:31retailer they've got some beautiful

10:33pieces that will really work for

10:34scandinavian as well you can also have

10:36some really great finds at target

10:38i've seen some at amazon that i'm going

10:40to show you here

10:41there's some really good ones by the way

10:42anything that i show you here today i'm

10:44going to try to link as much of it i can

10:45in the description if you want to check

10:47it out um but yeah so target uh west elm

10:51is really awesome too they've got really

10:52great pieces it's good it's like i said

10:54at the beginning scandinavian is so

10:56popular like a lot of scandinavian

10:58design elements will fit into lots of

11:01different homes that it tends to be

11:03really really easy to shop for so i

11:05think west elm article rove concepts of

11:07course ikea um

11:10target amazon wayfarer there's just so

11:12many retailers that have really great

11:14pieces i'm going to link to a whole

11:15bunch of stuff in the description for

11:16you to check out so that's it for me for

11:17today guys i'm going to link to my

11:19interior design style video so if you

11:20haven't seen that already you can click

11:22it right here and i hope to see you all

11:24in the next video thanks bye
