0:00welcome to the hard hat training Series
0:01today we will go over the essentials of
0:04concrete and masonry construction
0:06because concrete and masonry
0:08construction pose unique hazards there
0:10are specific standards and regulations
0:11involved with this work
0:14concrete and the technology used along
0:16with it has evolved throughout the
0:18centuries the first recorded instance of
0:21concrete work was in 6500 BC
0:24here was used to make floors housing
0:26structures and Underground cisterns
0:29the use of concrete became more
0:31widespread when the Romans began using
0:33it for the majority of their
0:34Construction
0:35they used a mix of volcanic ash lime and
0:38sea water in their mix they packed the
0:40mix into wooden forms and let it Harden
0:42then used it much like masonry breaks
0:45structures made of Roman concrete are
0:47still standing to this day
0:50today concrete can be found in
0:52everything from sidewalks to roads dams
0:54and the most modern high-rises
0:57it is such a familiar sight it is easy
0:59to forget the hazards associated with
1:01The Versatile material
1:03to illustrate the dangers of concrete
1:05and masonry construction we will want
1:07you to consider the following true story
1:10in the early afternoon on a Monday five
1:13employees were working on the sixth
1:14floor of an apartment building
1:15construction site
1:17workers on the seventh floor of the
1:18building were pouring concrete one of
1:21the employees on the sixth floor was in
1:22charge of checking for leaking concrete
1:24that would indicate the formwork beneath
1:25the wet concrete was failing
1:29as the concrete was poured it became too
1:31heavy and the floor gave way
1:33the formwork collapsed injuring four of
1:35the employees on the sixth floor
1:37they sustained crushing injuries and
1:39caustic Burns which comes from skin
1:40becoming exposed to wet Portland cement
1:44the fifth employee was crushed in the
1:46collapse and died
1:48this horrible accident was caused by
1:50improper Shoring which is a crucial
1:52Concrete Construction process that we
1:54will discuss later in this training as
1:56you can see mistakes in concrete masonry
1:58construction can become truly
2:00catastrophic
2:02there are many different hazards you
2:04were exposed to in concrete and Mason
2:05reconstruction
2:07you may be familiar with OSHA's fatal
2:09four Falls struck by electrocution and
2:12caught in in between
2:14these hazards are all present in
2:15concrete and masonry construction
2:18to give you perspective check out this
2:20graphic for more facts and figures
