0:00Nikola Tesla did not die insane . He
0:01died believing he had discovered
0:03something frightening about reality
0:04itself . Every object has natural
0:06frequencies of vibration , and if you
0:07apply force repeatedly at the right
0:09rhythm , each movement can reinforce the
0:11previous one . This is called resonance .
0:14In 1831 , soldiers were crossing a
0:15bridge in England , marching in rhythm ,
0:17when the structure started to sway .
0:19Then , the bridge collapsed and dozens
0:20of soldiers fell into the water . A
0:22structural failure was also involved ,
0:24but the case helped reinforce a rule
0:25that exists to this day . Soldiers must
0:27break step when crossing certain
0:28bridges . But Tesla took this idea much
0:31further . He claimed that a small device
0:32he created managed to make his
0:34Manhattan laboratory vibrate so hard it
0:36caught the neighbors ' attention . Tesla
0:37even stated that by using the right
0:39apparatus , he could make even large
0:41structures enter resonance . But this is
0:43where the story gets even stranger : the
0:44human body also responds to certain
0:46vibration frequencies . And decades
0:48later , an engineer named Vic Tandy had
0:50a frightening experience while working
0:52in a lab in England . The place had a
0:54reputation for being haunted . One night
0:55, while alone , he felt like someone was
0:56watching him . Then , he noticed a gray
0:58figure in the corner of his vision , but
1:00when he turned to look directly , it
1:01vanished . The next day , Tandy noticed a
1:03blade clamped in the lab was vibrating
1:05practically on its own . He decided to
1:07investigate and found a vibration of
1:08approximately 19 Hz in the environment .
1:10The source was a fan . When they turned
1:12the device off , the strange reports
1:13disappeared . Tandy then proposed a
1:15hypothesis . That very low frequency
1:17could be causing strange sensations and
1:19even alterations in peripheral vision .
1:20In other words , perhaps the ghost was
1:22never really in that room . This leaves
1:24an even more frightening question .
