Mais que vencedores: Romanos 8.26-30
0:02Today I have a very important matter to discuss with you , and I am certain this word is an encouraging and blessing word for your heart . I will speak today about more than conquerors , and I will expound on Romans chapter 8 , verses 26 to 30 . What I am about to tell you is
0:23very important to me . Not all people who dream , desire , and plan to succeed in life , actually succeed in life . This is not a possibility . This is a fact . It is a fact . And I will illustrate this fact with the Brazilian sports saga . I will bring it to your clear
0:43memory . 1950 , when Brazil hosted a World Cup for the first time ; on that occasion , when the Maracanã was built for that competition , that very important modality of global sport , uh ,
1:04Brazil was the big favorite to win that Cup . The world press pointed to Brazil as the strong candidate to be crowned world champion . Not to frustrate this expectation , there at the Maracanã , Brazil routed Mexico 4-0 , then came to São Paulo , drew 2-2 with Switzerland ,
1:25and qualified for the next stage by beating the then-Yugoslavia 2-0 . And from then on , Brazil became a great phenomenon of world football , because they went to the semifinal and routed Sweden 7-1 . They went to the semifinal and routed powerful Spain 6-1 . Then , on
1:47July 16 , 1950 , at the Maracanã , with 198,000 fans . Brazil took the field to play against Uruguay , needing only a draw to be crowned world champion . The entire Brazilian nation was already celebrating in anticipation . Flags waved in the streets and squares , and
2:09the people considered victory a certainty . Brazil took the field and scored 1-0 in the first half . They almost returned for the second half with the champion's sash on their chest , but when they returned for the second half , Uruguay tied the game , bringing great apprehension to the Brazilian nation . But Brazil was still the world
2:31champion . However , before the match ended , Uruguay turned the game around , making it 2-1 . The Maracanã was covered in silence , the Brazilian nation in tears , and the expectation of victory turned into a bitter and fateful defeat . I want to tell you , however , that this is not the destiny
2:52of God's children . We do not just have an expectation of victory . We have a guarantee of victory . We are already more than conquerors . This is the great truth that this text presents to you and to me . Romans 8 : 26-30 . Paul shows
A solidariedade de Deus: o Espírito nos ajuda
3:14us here that God Himself is determined to lead us to glory . And he will show us some truths that I will highlight here . The first one , what we would call God's solidarity , when it says : " Likewise : The Spirit also helps us in our weakness , for we do not know how to
3:34pray as we should . " Notice that we are not more than conquerors because we are strong , because we are giants , or because we have within ourselves all the elements for this magnificent victory . We are not winners because we have the capacity to fight and win on
3:54our own . We are more than conquerors , despite being weak and very weak . We have emotional weaknesses . We have moral weaknesses , we have spiritual weaknesses , we have physical weaknesses . The Bible even says that God knows our frame and remembers that we are
4:17dust . When you visit bookstores , here in Brazil and abroad , new publications appear every day , and you will notice that most of the literature that is not only published but reaches huge sales , as major bestsellers , is generally self-help or works that teach you how
4:38to get rich quick , saying that you are a giant , that you have the strength , that you have the power , that there is power in your words , when in truth the Bible teaches us the opposite of this . We are weak . What is interesting is that God does not abandon us , nor does
5:01He drive us away , nor does He discard us because we are weak . The Spirit likewise helps us in our weakness . And this word " help " in the Greek language carries the idea of sustaining , of carrying , implying that life is too heavy a burden for you to bear alone .
5:25So the Lord Himself carries this burden for us . We would be crushed by our own weaknesses — physical , emotional , moral , and spiritual . But the Holy Spirit helps us in our weakness . Now you might still ask : " But why are we weak ? Where does it lie ? Where is our weakness ? In
Por que não sabemos orar como convém
5:47what does our weakness consist ? " Paul answers : " Because we do not even know how to pray as we should . " And what does this mean ? It means that we do not know what is best for us . We are so weak to the point of not having a full discernment , a clear reading of what is
6:07best for us . Sometimes we ask God for a stone thinking we are asking for bread . Sometimes we ask God for a snake thinking we are asking for a fish . Sometimes we ask God for a scorpion thinking we are asking for an egg . Sometimes we ask God for what will destroy us , thinking we are asking for
6:24what will give us life . God loves us so much , God cares so much for us , God is so determined to lead us to victory and guide us to glory that He does not answer , He does not grant all our requests . He gives us not what we want , He gives us what we need , He gives us
6:42the best . When Jesus taught us to pray like this : " Ask and it shall be given to you ! Seek and you shall find . Knock and it shall be opened to you . For everyone who asks receives . Everyone who seeks finds . Everyone who knocks , it shall be opened to him . " Sometimes
6:55we understand this in a biased way . Sometimes we understand it like this : " Everyone who asks receives what they ask for . " No , that is not what Jesus taught . What He taught was that everyone who asks receives , but He did not teach that everyone who asks receives what they ask for . Because we
7:12do not know how to pray as we should . Because sometimes , since we cannot see around the bend , we cannot see in the dark , we do not know , we do not know what is up ahead , we think this or that is best for us . So , God does not give us what we want , but gives us what we
7:33need . This is where God's solidarity lies . But verse 26 continues by saying :
O Espírito Santo intercede por nós
7:39" But the Spirit Himself intercedes for us with groanings that cannot be uttered . " Here is this great compassion of God . Because you see , God is so good to us . God is so determined to make us more than conquerors and lead us to His glory , that within the Trinity you have two intercessors . Jesus Christ , the
8:02second person of the Trinity , is the righteous advocate , the one who intercedes before the Father for us . He is our great high priest . He is the one who took up our cause , the one who died for our sins , the one who rose for our justification , the one who is at the
8:21right hand of God the Father interceding for us . In such a way that Jesus is the legal , forensic intercessor . Whenever an accusation against you reaches the court of God , it is as if Jesus stood up , saying , " No , for this sin I died . " Whoever believes in me owes nothing more . There
8:41is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus . They are square with the law , square with justice . They are justified . There is no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus . He is able to save completely those who draw near to God because He always lives to intercede for us . But now Paul
9:00is saying that we have a second intercessor in the Trinity , which is the existential intercessor . is the third person of the Trinity , the Holy Spirit . And how does the Holy Spirit intercede for us ? First , He intercedes for us in an intense manner , He intercedes exceedingly . It is the same expression from John 3:16 . For God so
9:22loved the world in such a way . Being God , He employs all His effort , all His attributes , His whole person in the commitment of this intercession for us , in us , to the God who is above us . Secondly , this intercession is agonizing because it is with groanings
9:42which cannot be uttered . Now , pay attention that the Holy Spirit is God and as such He knows all languages , all idioms , all dialects of all peoples , of all times , of all places . He knows the language of angels , He knows the language of men , He knows the language of heaven , He knows the languages of
10:03earth . And when He is interceding for us , in us , to the God who is above us , He does not find even one language . So He groans with groanings that cannot be uttered . It is with this agony , this intensity that the Holy Spirit intercedes for you , in you , to the God
10:26who is above you . But thirdly , the Holy Spirit intercedes not only intensely and agonizingly , but also effectively . Because verse 27 says : " Now He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is , because He makes intercession for the saints according to the will of God . " If I do not know
10:46how to pray as I ought , the Holy Spirit knows . If I can pray against the will of God , because James says : " You ask and do not receive , because you ask amiss , that you may spend it on your pleasures . " All the Spirit's intercessions for me , in me , to the God
11:08who is above me , are strictly aligned with the good , acceptable , and perfect will of God . In other words , the Holy Spirit does not waste any of His intercessions for us . That is why we are more than conquerors . Now , note with me that this text presents us not
Todas as coisas cooperam para o bem
11:29only with the solidarity of God and the compassion of God , but this text presents us with the wisdom of God . And verse 28 of Romans 8 is perhaps one of the most appreciated texts in all the Bible , one of the most beloved verses in all the Bible , certainly one of the most comforting in all the Bible . And
11:50Paul begins like this : " And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God , to those who are the called according to His purpose . " This word , " we know , " is a word derived from mathematics , from an exact term . This is not a hypothetical conjecture ;
12:10it is an experimental certainty . We know ; Paul does not say : " We feel , we ponder , we imagine , we idealize . " No , we know it as surely as two plus two equals four . We know it ; it is an experience , not just information . And what do we know ? We know that all
12:32things — not some , not the majority — all things work together for the good of those who love God . This verse , while being comforting , can also be highly confusing , or someone might be saying : " No , no , no , I cannot believe this . " If you heard my story , you would
12:50agree with me . My story is tragic . I have already been through so many extremely difficult situations . I cannot accept this , I cannot understand this . So , let us better understand what Paul is not saying . First , Paul is not saying that all things that happen to
O que Romanos 8.28 não está dizendo
13:08us are good things . He is not saying that . He himself was persecuted in Damascus , rejected in Jerusalem , forgotten in Tarsus , stoned in Lystra , flogged in Philippi , driven out of Thessalonica , chased out of Berea , called a babbler in Athens , and called
13:29an impostor in Corinth . He faced wild beasts in Ephesus , was arrested in Jerusalem , was accused in Caesarea , and faced a shipwreck . He was bitten by a snake in Malta on the way to Rome . He arrived in Rome as a prisoner in chains . He was abandoned by his friends and was accused of a crime he did not
13:48commit . He was sentenced to the death penalty . These things are not good in themselves . He faced shipwrecks . He faced dangers from rivers and dangers in deserts . He carried on his body the marks of Christ , the scars from the lashings . So , he is not saying that all things that happen to us are good
14:09things . I know that terrible things happen . A serious accident , a grave illness , a painful bereavement , a traumatic divorce , a son who brings tears and pain , a daughter who brings worry , a loved relative who remains bedridden for years , a dire financial
14:29situation , full of hardship . So he is not saying that all things that happen to us are good things . Secondly , he is not saying that all things just fall into place like a game of dice or coincidences . It is not a matter of horoscopes , whether the stars are in your favor or not . It is not a mystical
14:51issue . No , things by themselves will not just fall into place . What he is saying is that it is God who will , like a divine weaver , interweave all things , some joyful , others sad , health , sickness , prosperity and adversity ,
15:12laughter and tears , embraces and partings . And in the end , in the end , all of this will work together for our good . Thirdly , he is not saying that all things work together for the good of all people . No , he is not saying that . The Bible even says that whoever
15:35sows the wind reaps the whirlwind . Whoever sows enmity reaps enmity . Whoever sows confusion , reaps confusion . Whoever sows hatred , reaps a lack of forgiveness . So the Bible even says that whoever sows to the flesh , from the flesh reaps corruption . So he is not saying that all things work together for the good of all people . He
15:56says that all things work together for the good of those who love God , of those who are called according to His purpose . Well , but you might still argue , well , pastor , but I don't understand . I don't understand . What is happening to me is something serious . I imagine , for example , the story of Job
16:12himself , who , being the richest man , ends up bankrupt , broken , in a financial collapse . A father who buries all his children on the same day , a man who loses his health , becomes covered in sores , a human carcass , a living wound . A man who has , at the most acute
16:31hour of his life , the displeasure of hearing his wife saying : " End this , curse God and die . " A man who deals with accusations from his friends , heavy and baseless accusations , calling him a thief , an adulterer , a madman , an exploiter of orphans and widows . So ,
16:53perhaps you are saying : " I can't understand it . " Now , when you cannot understand what God is doing , you can understand God , because what we know of God is that He is good , He is faithful . He does not allow us to be tempted beyond our strength or tested beyond our strength . He is rich in mercy and
17:14takes pleasure in forgiving . Allow me to illustrate this . When Albert Einstein came to America for the first
Ilustrações: Einstein e o bordado visto pelo avesso
17:23time after the famous theory of relativity that made him notorious and known and famous worldwide , a reporter asked his wife , who was accompanying him , although she was a very cultured , very intelligent woman who followed all his scientific research : " Do you understand the complex theory of relativity for which your husband is so
17:45famous in the world ? " She replied : " No , I do not understand the complex theory of relativity for which my husband is so famous worldwide , but I do understand my husband . " " If you cannot understand what is happening in your life , you can understand that He is your father and He loves you , and He is
18:07working so that all things work together for the good of those who love God . " Of course , you and I have short-sighted vision . We cannot see around the bend , we cannot see in the dark , we do not know exactly what will be up ahead . So , uh , sometimes we look at life from the wrong side . Let me
18:29illustrate again , uh , an American writer , ah , who published ' The Five Love Languages , ' said that when he was a child he was playing while his mother was doing hand embroidery . And he was playing ah at his mother's feet and saw the embroidery from below , from the
18:49backside , with loose threads , and nothing made sense . There was neither harmony nor beauty in it . And unable to contain his curiosity , he said : " Mom , what an ugly thing you are making , what is that ? " His mother realized his dilemma , took him on her lap , and
19:09showed him the beauty of the embroidery from the right side . And the boy was enchanted because there was beauty , there was harmony , there was meaning , there was a purpose . Perhaps we today are looking at our lives like a child looking at embroidery from the backside . The threads are loose , things seem
19:33not to fit , but one day God will take us into His presence , into His glory , He will show us our lives from above , and we will understand that all things worked together for our good . Well , but the question remains : what good is this ? What good is this ? What is Paul
O grande projeto de Deus: ser parecido com Jesus
19:53talking about ? Is this good being rich , having health , having success , having friends , having professional fulfillment , having a brilliant academic or professional career ? No , that is not what Paul is dealing with . He answers in verse 29 , when he says : "
20:15For those God foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son . " This is the good for which God is working in us , through us . " In other words , God’s great project in your life is not just to lead you to
20:36glory , but to transform you into the image of the King of Glory . " God's great project for your life is to make you a person like Jesus , for you to have the character of Jesus , for you to live just as Jesus lived , for you to imitate Jesus when he himself said : "
20:56Learn from me , for I am gentle and humble in heart . " To be like Jesus , to lead you to the stature of the perfect man , to full maturity , that is God's great project for your life . Other things might even come in tow : health ,
21:18prosperity , professional success , etc. , etc. , etc. They come in tow , but God's greatest project in your life is to make you a person like Jesus . If you have any doubt about what God's plan for your life is , there it is in plain language . God wants you to be like
21:39Jesus . Well , let's go to verse 30 , because here is what we can call the
A cadeia da graça: escolhidos, chamados e justificados
21:46links in the chain of grace . It is this plan of God that unfolds from eternity , passing through all of history and consummating in eternity once again . And Paul begins like this : " Those whom
22:06God predestined , these he also called . " And those whom he called , these he also justified . And those whom he justified , these he also glorified . There is a word here that causes a kind of resistance in many people : the doctrine of predestination or election , as some
22:27prefer to call it . The big question is this : who chooses whom ? Are we the ones who choose God , or is it God who chooses us ? The Lord Jesus Christ said back in John 15:16 : " You did not choose me . " On the contrary , I chose you . I
22:49chose you . It is God who predestines us . It is not we who choose God . It was He who chose us . And He chose us before the foundation of the world . Therefore , this election is unconditional . God did not choose us because He saw that we would believe in Jesus , and therefore
23:08predestined us . No. Acts 13:48 says : " All who were appointed for eternal life believed . " It does not say that all who believed were appointed for eternal life , although that is true , but it is written : " All who were appointed for eternal life believed . " In other words ,
23:31faith is not the cause of divine choice . Faith is the result of divine choice . You were not predestined because you believed ; you believed because you were predestined . Secondly , God did not choose you because God foresaw that you would be holy or saw holiness in you .
23:53No. Paul says in Ephesians 1 : 4 he chose us in Christ before the foundation of the world to be holy and blameless . And not because we were holy and blameless . In such a way that holiness is not the cause of election . Holiness is the result of election . God
24:15did not predestine us because He saw good works in us . No , that is not what the Bible teaches . The Bible says we are God’s handiwork , created in Christ Jesus for good works and not because of good works . In such a way that good works are the result of divine choice and not the cause of
24:34divine choice . All things come from God . Who reconciled us to Himself through Jesus Christ . Then Paul continues and says : " Those whom God predestined , He also called . " And you know well that there are two types of calls . There is an external call and an internal call .
24:55There is a call directed to the ears and there is a call directed to the heart . Jesus said : " Many are called , few are chosen . " The external call is general , it is for everyone . The internal call is when the sinner hears the gospel , and God Himself removes the
25:16blindfold , unplugs the ears , takes away the heart of stone , and gives a heart of flesh . It was Jesus who said : " My sheep hear my voice and they follow me . " I give them eternal life and no one will snatch them out of my hands . Jesus
25:37also said : " No one can come to me unless the Father draws them , and whoever comes to me I will never cast out . " In such a way , in such a way that those who are predestined are necessarily also called . Because the God who predestines the ends , salvation , also predestines the means . Faith
25:58comes from hearing , and hearing the word of God . The preached gospel is the voice of the shepherd . Those whom God chose will hear , will heed the call , will believe , and will be saved . You arrive in a setting , there are 100 people , 200 people , 1,000 people . You
26:21preach the same gospel in the same setting , on the same day , under the same circumstances . Some will be like wax before the sun ; they will melt . Others will be like clay before the sun ; they will harden . They will harden . Those whom God predestined , God also called . Allow me to illustrate . I was
26:42in Vitória on a Monday in my pastoral office when a gentleman of about 30 years old knocked on the door . He said : " Pastor , may I come in ? Can I talk to you ? " I said , " Of course . " He sat down and told me : " I was here last night at
26:55the service , Sunday night . " I said , " That's good , that's good , brother , you would be very welcome here . " He said , " But I didn't come to participate in the service yesterday , no . " I said , " What happened ? " " So what did you come to do ? "
27:06I asked . He told me : " I was a drug dealer . I came yesterday to steal a car in front of the church , I had to pay a debt . And I asked : " But what happened ? " He said : " While I was watching the cars to know which one I would take , I
27:19heard music , a hymn that poured out from inside the temple , and I was irresistibly drawn inside the temple , just as I was , with my revolver in my waistband . When I went in and heard the word of God , it hit my heart like a bomb . That broke me , and I burst into
27:39tears and ran home . And my wife , seeing me arriving home crying , said : " What happened to you ? Did someone hurt you ? " I answered her : " No , woman , that man you knew is dead . Jesus changed my life . He set me free . I am a new creature . "
27:56He calls , He calls in the street , He calls in the hospital , He calls inside the church , He calls at the bar on the corner , He calls on the soccer field , He calls on the sickbed . The voice of God is powerful . It , it is irresistible . It is like the voice of many waters
28:11to those whom God predestined , these God also called . And Paul continues like this : " And whom God called , these God also justified . " Here is certainly
Justificados pela fé: Jesus pagou a nossa dívida
28:22the heart of the Bible . Do you know why ? The Bible says that all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God . The Bible says that everyone will have to appear before the judgment seat of Christ to give an account of their life . The Bible says that on that great day of judgment , the books will be opened
28:39and they will be judged according to what is written in the books . The Bible says that four criteria will participate , will be elements within our judgment in the court of God . First , our words . We will give an account on the day of judgment for every frivolous word that we utter . We will give an
28:58account on the day of judgment for all the works that we have done . Sometimes some public , others not so much , others even secret . All of this will be laid bare on the day of judgment . We will give an account of our omissions , that which we knew we should have done and did not do . We will give an account on
29:19the day of judgment for our own thoughts and desires , because God will judge the secrets of the hearts of men . God's court is the only court that has the competence to judge the inner forum , because God knows the heart . Certainly , God's court is different from earthly courts , because in earthly courts , even the highest courts are
29:40prone to error and mistake . Often , and sadly , judges are corrupted , witnesses are bought , and sentences are unjust . In earthly courts , you see a Pontius Pilate judging and Jesus of Nazareth being judged . In earthly courts , you
30:05see a Herod judging and a John the Baptist being condemned to prison and death . In earthly courts , you see the wicked flaunting robes and the innocent being judged and condemned , but God's court cannot be corrupted . The true judge of the living and the dead cannot
30:26be corrupted . The law cannot be twisted . Justice cannot be degraded . The soul that sins , it shall die . God will not leave the guilty unpunished , says the Bible . And in these four criteria — our words , our works , our omissions , and our thoughts — certainly , no one will be able to pass through this filter of
30:46God's court . All guilty , all guilty , all guilty . That is why the Bible says that another book will be opened , the Book of Life . And if anyone does not have their name written in the Book of Life , they will be cast into the lake of fire to suffer an eternal penalty .
31:08Well , but how can I , being guilty , have my name in the Book of Life ? Because if God's standard for entering heaven is perfection — and it is indeed , because no sin enters heaven , nothing contaminated will enter there — and I am a sinner , and you are a sinner , and we are sinners , then there is no chance
31:28for me to enter there by my efforts , by my works , by my moral credentials , or by my religiosity . The wonderful thing is that God solved this for us when He sent His son , His only son , as our guarantor , as our representative . He took our place . He bore our sins in His
31:47body on the tree , and the Father Himself laid upon Him the iniquity of us all . He was wounded ; it pleased the Father to crush Him . And He took upon Himself the guilt of our sin . He paid our debt on the cross . Not with gold or silver , but with His blood . And He
32:08drank alone the bitter cup of God's wrath that should have fallen upon us . He died our death to give us eternal life . And now he cries out on the cross . It is finished , it is paid . He who believes in me owes nothing more . He is square with the law . He is square with
32:28justice . No more condemnation upon him . He is justified . This is the glorious truth that took place on the cross of Calvary . When you believe in Jesus , you are declared righteous before the court of God . And Paul ends this text by saying : " And those whom he justified ,
32:50he also glorified . " Notice that glorification here is placed as a verb , and a verb in the past tense , as a completed past fact . Even though you and I know that glorification will happen at the end of the ages , at the second coming of Christ , therefore it is in the future . But the apostle Paul ,
33:11knowing that those whom God predestined , those he also called ; and those whom he called , those he also justified , has no problem affirming that , in the mind of God and in the decrees of God that cannot be frustrated , these people are already in the mind of God , in the decrees of God , glorified . In other
33:34words , salvation was planned by God , it is executed by God , and it will be consummated by God . With this , Paul is
Nada pode nos separar do amor de Deus
33:43saying that our salvation is secured , guaranteed , not by us , but by him . Paul , then , says that God knew us beforehand , predestined us , called us , justified us , and glorified us . And he concludes this beautiful , sublime biblical passage with five rhetorical
34:07questions , since he made five statements . If God is for us , who can be against us ? He who did not spare his own Son , but gave him up for us all , will he not also graciously give us all things with him ? Third question : Who shall bring any charge against God's elect ? It is God who justifies . Fourth
34:26question . Who is to condemn ? Is it Christ Jesus who died , yes , who was raised , who is at the right hand of God and also intercedes for us ? Fifth question : Who shall separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus ? Shall tribulation , distress , persecution , famine , nakedness , danger ,
34:42or sword ? Are we more than conquerors through all these things ? And Paul concludes like this : " I am sure that neither death , nor life , nor angels , nor rulers , nor powers , nor height , nor depth , nor anything else in all creation , will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus
35:01our Lord . If you are in Christ , you are more than a conqueror . Your salvation is secure , guaranteed by God Himself . What a sublime truth ! What a glorious gospel , what a blessed promise , what a wonderful salvation , what eternal security . I encourage you to pause for
35:23a moment and meditate on these truths , not only so they may bring light to your mind , but also bring warmth and fire to your heart , bending your knees to acknowledge that Jesus is the Savior , is the Lord , the One who came so you may have life and have it in abundance , to make you more than a conqueror . May

36:05we look at our lives and it seems like nothing makes sense . But we can trust that God is still working . Not all things that happen to us are good in themselves , but God is powerful enough to make them all work together for our good .
