0:00Is that a serious thing? If an NFL team calls you, you would you'd suit up? >> I thought my playing career was over. I would certainly entertain going back and playing in the NFL. And I've had a couple teams uh reach out and just gauge my interest. The UFFL's actually reached out as well, and they want me to come
0:14come play in the league. Michael Parson's on Twitter, you know, tweeting about every team in the world, doing podcasts. I don't think Mike is always great for the locker room. It's a distraction. And and I I'll tell you this story, and I I've told it before, but I haven't told it in this way. the only person who didn't come and your
0:31luck. >> Yo yo yo, I'm Robert Griffin III and you're watching Double Coverage.
Welcome to Double Coverage with RGIII
0:36>> Double Coverage is presented by DraftKings. The crown is yours. >> What's up guys? Mr. Exact here. Welcome back to season two of Double Coverage. Today I am joined by former Heisman Trophy winner, NFL Rookie of the Year, NFL Pro Bowler, now the host of the Out of Pocket Podcast, Fox College Football Commentator, my guy RG3. >> Appreciate you, brother. Good to be here
0:55with you. >> Good to be here with you, man. And it's always a good time when football's on. College and the NFL, it's a different mood. >> Yeah, there's no better time in the year than the fall when football season comes around. Feels like social media is jumping more. All the memes are a lot funnier and everybody feels like they're
Cowboys’ Super Bowl Chances & NFL Quarterback Injuries
1:11in their happy place. So, >> yeah. No, it's everyone's year, right? We're still in that phase. We're heading into week five. >> Still got a chance. >> Everyone's got a chance. Um, both college and the NFL. Who are you? Who's standing out to you? Who are your teams you're looking out for? We'll start with the NFL. >> Oh, I mean NFL wise, uh, I heard you're
1:30a Cowboys fan. I am a Cowboys fan. >> So, uh, somebody's got to figure out a way to to guard Cidi Lamb, right? He had 17 catches this past week. I think the Cowboys actually have a decent chance of making a Super Bowl run this year. I can't say that they're the Super Bowl favorites, you know, but there's just a
1:43lot of injuries, you know, so what sticks out to me is kind of the bad Washington Commanders, Jaden Daniels with the elbow injury. Um, you know, you got a bunch of other quarterbacks that are that are falling by the wayside. The Baltimore Ravens, right? Jackson with the ankle injury. >> Um, so I'm just looking at this like,
1:59man, when is one of these teams going to going to call my my my phone number and uh maybe Cam Newton, you know?
Would RGIII Actually Return to the NFL?
2:05>> Is that a serious thing? If an NFL team calls you, you would you would suit up. >> I got to say, first and foremost, I love my job. Fox Sports. Appreciate you guys. Take care of me greatly. I love my crew. Connor Onion, our playbyplay, Alexa, our sideline. But yes, if an NFL team did call me and the opportunity was was
2:21worth it, I would certainly entertain going back and playing in the NFL. and I'm ready. You know, I posted videos on social media of me out there throwing and I've actually ramped up my throwing over the past couple weeks just because a ready man doesn't have to get ready. He stays ready. >> Have there been like any prospective
2:35conversations? Any feelers?
RGIII Reveals NFL Teams Have Reached Out & UFL Interest
2:38>> Yes. Um, you know, I'll try to keep all those things, you know, as private as I possibly can, but I've had a couple teams uh reach out and just gauge my interest to see if um if I'm serious about it or if it's like, you know, just social media fodder. The UFFL's actually reached out as well and they want me to
2:54come come play in the league. Uh, you know, Mike Rapoli, the Noble guy, body armor guy, Vitamin Water guy, he he's really trying to turn that league into more of an entertainment league instead of a developmental league. So, uh, they're actually talking to me right now trying to convince me to come play in the NFL. So, I thought my playing career
3:12was over, but apparently there's some prospects out there in the NFL and and the UFFL that maybe I go back and play.
Falcons Quarterback Situation & Michael Penix Jr.
3:17We'll see. >> Yeah. Well, we were all watching the Falcons those couple of weeks and I haven't played quarterback since Flag, but even [laughter] I was like, maybe I can do it. You know, I don't I can maybe get the ball to Drake London in a pinch or hand it to Bjon Robinson. >> I mean, come on, Zach. Like, you you
3:32don't think that you could hand the ball off to Bean 30 times and maybe just like run around and like he's open down there somewhere, throw it up to Drake London? I mean, I think you could have played quarterback better than Cooper Rush. Sorry, Cooper. It was horrible. And uh I I was I mean that was really the reason
3:48that I posted the video was the Atlanta Falcons. Couldn't be happier now for Michael Pennix Jr. Yeah. Cooper Rush. >> Hey, >> no. When I watch Michael Penn, I don't think [laughter] I take myself out. No, I'm not that guy. No, he was excellent. And they beat down the Saints. >> Yeah. I mean, listen, I'm from New
4:06Orleans, Louisiana. You know, my family, should I say, is from New Orleans, Louisiana. Mom and dad, both born and raised there. So, I've heard the Saints be called the Ants for 36 years from my family. It was sad to see cuz Tyler
Is Bijan Robinson the Best Running Back in Football?
4:17Shuck's been playing at a high level, but man, you know, when you got Bejian Robinson out there running 59 yard touchdowns like he's jogging in that offensive line looks like he's jogging. >> He literally looks like he's jogging, you know, efficient sprinting, but uh they beat the Saints so bad. The family group chat was in shambles. >> Yeah. Am I crazy [laughter] or is like
4:34Bajan Robinson as good as any running back there's I mean >> Yeah. I mean, the the the closest comparable to Bejon is Barry Sanders. You know, I'm not saying that just cuz you got the Lions jersey on, but Barry was so elusive and Bejon does that, but he also has that topend speed that makes him so dynamic. I think Bejian Robinson
4:54is the best running back in the league by far now. >> Yeah, I agree. >> Couple years ago, sorry, Gibbs. >> A couple years ago, it was like, you know, Gibbs, you know, Derrick Henry, Seaquan. Now, I think it's bean's league and uh he's showing you that every single week now. >> You know, it's absolutely Bejan. And
5:08what about what he does in the prime time games? >> And that that's what fans at home have to understand. How you perform in prime time games really shapes the narrative for the fans cuz more fans are paying attention. You're in that early game or in the midday game, you don't have as many eyeballs. But you get Monday Night
5:23Football, Sunday night football, you got 20, 30 million people watching you. And Bean seems to only elevate when there's more people watching. So I I think that's going to go a long way in shaping the narrative for him being the greatest back. And it's also just winning. you know, Detroit, you know, has lost a couple games this year, you know, got
5:39dominated by the Panthers. Sorry about that. But when Bej is able to do what he's doing and the other backs aren't, that's when it starts to snowball for him. You know, he's got a he wants to be
Kirk Cousins, the Raiders & the AFC West
5:49an actor. >> Oh, okay. He's got the look and he's certainly got the >> he's got some mustard. You know, he's selling product, but Bejian by far right now is one of the most unstoppable players in the league. >> No, you're absolutely right about that prime time narrative. For years, your former teammate Kirk Cousins played by that
6:05>> 100%. And it's and it's unfortunate and and I and I'll go ahead and dispel any rumors now. Me and Kirk were great as teammates. We even shared a burrito together one time when we were rookies. Kirk is a is a really good quarterback who never performed quite to his capabilities in prime time games. And that's why fans think he can't get it
6:24done. He's actually playing at a high level right now uh for the Raiders. I'll be honest, I was not a guy that thought he should start for the Raiders. Not after the way he played last year. I thought that, you know, our guy Fernando Mendoza should have been the starter just because you want to come into a new
6:38era with a new quarterback, but Kirk is playing out of his mind right now. And uh he's got a lot of people believing that the Raiders could actually be contenders. They played the the Chiefs. >> They played him tough. The only way for Kirk to really get over that hump would be to go on a massive playoff run, play
6:55well in prime time, and potentially win a Super Bowl. Otherwise, his narrative is pretty much already written. >> Are you buying the Raiders hype? Do you think that's a possibility? >> I I do think it's a possibility because the Chargers have been so bad. No one expected them to be in the position that they are right now, especially with Jim
7:12Harbaugh and Justin Herbert. And you bring in Mike McDaniel from, you know, Miami and one of your other teams. [laughter] It's It's unfortunate, but it makes the rest of that division feel better. The Broncos aren't as good as they were last year. >> No. First year play caller. >> Chargers are terrible. So, the Raiders are sitting there and it's like, well,
7:29if the Broncos don't get better, the Raiders can make the playoffs. So, I I'm I wouldn't say it's hype at this point. It's only the first quarter of the season, but man, did they did they start fast. >> Yeah. And they're very well coached. I mean, clearly bringing in Clint Kubak was a good decision. Tom Brady maybe
7:43making his impact felt up there, right? And then when you go back to Kubak and his success with Kirk Previous in Minnesota, correct? >> The puzzles start to piece together. I I've always said this, coaches and people in general in business, they are way more comfortable failing with the people that they know. He knows Kirk. He comes in, he's trying to establish his
8:03own culture of winning and he's like, "All right, well, I know this guy. If I draw it up perfectly, that's one thing Kirk will do. If it's drawn up perfectly, he will hit the play. If it's open, he's going to hit it." Creativity is where he where he struggles. But right now, early in the season, Kubak is
8:16doing an incredible job of scheming things open for them. So I always I've always noticed that coaches bring guys with them wherever they go. And I think Kirk was the right move for Kubak.
Vikings’ Undefeated Start & Brian Flores’ Defense
8:27>> Absolutely. And then his former team, the Vikings, off to an undefeated start. They're the first team to start two and four and0 with two games they didn't score a touchdown on offense. [laughter] >> So they're they're a weird case that hasn't happened since the 30s. Literally the 30s. But uh you have to give it up to Brian Flores in this defensive unit.
8:46It's been a masterful job. Brian Flores lives by one creed and it's we're not going to slow right all right so he is full send every single time on defense they're blitzing I think at one point they were at like 69% blitz percentage coming after the quarterback and when you have different quarterbacks every single year you got Kyler Murray before
9:06that you had you know JJ McCarthy Sam Darnold now you got Carson Wentz it's like >> nine [laughter] you've seen those memes I think your defense is what really plays into that. So, you know, KC is doing a nice job of managing his QB situation right now. Uh they they when you start 4-0, it gives the quarterback some relief.
9:26>> Oh my god, I don't have to do everything. Um but it's it's it's a weird league, man. Uh coaches always say you live it by quarters. First quarter of the of the season, those first four games, Minnesota's obviously playing well, >> but Flores, I mean, got to be an early front runner for coordinator of the year.
9:41>> Oh, yes. >> Once again. >> Once again. And he's suing the NFL. [laughter] So, it's like he is he is, you know, he's a coach that should get another head coaching opportunity. You just wonder with all the legality of stuff that's going on, how is that going to go? But if other teams are missing out on him as a head coach, well, the
9:59Vikings are certainly benefiting from him being the defensive coordinator, >> but maybe he can negotiate a good check. >> Oh, yeah. Exactly. And they're paying, you know, there's no salary cap for the coaches, so they can pay him whatever they want. [laughter]
Ben Johnson, Caleb Williams & the Bears’ Super Bowl Potential
10:11>> It's a good advantage for him. Talk to me about some of these other teams. the Chicago Bears, Ben Johnson, what he's done as a head coach. I mean, I I saw Nick Wright say this. I think it was absolutely right. He's a massive advantage for the team going into every week. They lose Caleb Tyson Beette this
10:26past week. Case came the week before. Explain this Chicago Bears team and coach Ben Johnson. >> Yeah, Ben Johnson's the best thing that ever happened to Chicago. And uh he's the best thing that's happened to Caleb Williams. And this is what I hate. John Ben Johnson, the Bears are playing so well. Tyson Beant, amazing story. I don't know if you ever heard about his
10:41dad and the arm wrestling. like I I did the special that special interest story for Begant when he was coming out um when I was at ESPN, but because Ben Johnson is so effective, people are starting to try to discredit Caleb Williams and and I think that that's counterintuitive and and and dumb. Caleb Williams is the starting quarterback for
10:58the Bears. Special guy. Ben Johnson is a timing, rhythm, on time guy, and that's why Case Keenum played so well. I did this uh study uh you know last week about Case Keenum getting the ball out on time. So he was getting the ball out of his hands in like 2.4 seconds. Caleb was more at like 3.1 longest in the
11:18league. Why? Caleb is like Picasso. He's going to paint the picture. You know what I mean? He's not going to just sit there and be like, "Oh, well this was wide open or this wasn't open, so I'm just going to throw the check down." He's like, "No, no, no. That's not open Let's get jiggy with it. Let's do
11:33a spin move. Go this way. Oh, touchdown 40 yard gain. I think that's special and I think him and Ben together can help the Bears win a Super Bowl. I think that's where Ben struggled with Jared Golf in Detroit. They were able to play at a high level, but he needed his Picasso at quarterback to say in the
11:50playoffs when it's not just about the X's and the O's, right? This podcast game is not just about the production and the X's and the O's. It's about the Jimmies and the Joe's. You feel me? And you got to make sure you have that proper balance. And I think Ben Johnson with Caleb Williams gives them the proper balance of structure and someone
12:07who's willing to paint a little bit outside the lines. And that to me is why, you know, I think the Bears, they had to get the decision right with the head coach. And they got it right with Ben Johnson. >> Best thing to ever happen to Chicago. >> Best thing to ever happen to Chicago. Yeah. >> Caleb since Michael Jordan.
12:21>> Since Michael Jordan. All right. [laughter] Is Caleb Williams the top 10? The >> top 10 quarterback? >> No. No. The best things happened Chicago. >> I I think it's still, you know, >> the jury's out a little bit. The jury's not out. I think he's their franchise quarterback. >> He absolutely is. >> But I think from a from a head coaching
12:36standpoint, Ben Johnson potentially could be the head coach for the Bears longer than Caleb Williams could be the quarterback. And I think that's where, you know, people have to understand that our our shelf life could be 10 to 15 years. Ben Johnson could be in Chicago for 30 years if he wanted to. That would be phenomenal, right? I think Caleb is
12:52is already putting himself in position to be one of the best quarterbacks the Bears have ever had. All he needs is a Super Bowl. >> He's like almost number one. He's he's right there, right? I mean, they Jay Cutler, but like >> Jim McMahon is the one. >> What Caleb Williams does out of the pocket is accuracy. Probably the most
13:09accurate guy I've ever seen out of the pocket. >> Yeah. And it's and it's crazy cuz he's in what year three. >> Yeah. >> So, if he he's already climbing the the ranks, you know, Rex Gman took him to a Super Bowl. That was he was my teammate in Washington. >> He's my uh shout out to Mark. That's his
13:22neighbor in Delray Beach. >> Yeah. And Rex is awesome, by the way. Phenomenal, hilarious guy. He just kept both teams in the game. You know, he's going to throw it to his guys and he's going to throw it to the other team a couple times as well. But you you see Caleb climbing and it shows you honestly
13:35just how bad the Bears quarterback situation has been for generations. >> Oh no. He's going to he's going to supersede every single record. He's going to smash them all for sure. And it doesn't hurt when you got Kyle Manungai, DeAndre Swift, Ben Johnson prioritizes the trenches. They go out and get Drew Joe Thun Wright a tackle. I mean they're
13:52blocking so well up front with Caleb Williams' ability. They're they're Super Bowl contenders. >> Okay. You no ball. Yeah. >> You feel me? I like it. He's he's throwing it out there. I'm like, "Hey, what' you say?" >> um >> the defense has to get They need the defense to be average. >> Yes. >> Just to have a And then they can be a
14:08Super Bowl winning team. >> 100%. And I don't know if you read my my write-ups this this offseason, but that's exactly what I said. The the Bears don't defense doesn't need to be like the 85 Bears. They just need to be average. If they're middle of the pack, this team goes on a Super Bowl run. And if they can find a way to get after the
14:24passer, that's when now, okay, we can be dominant. If you look at the the quarterbacks that have won Super Bowls in the last 10 years, I think only two of them didn't have a top 10 defense or a top 15 defense. So, if the Bears want to win the Super Bowl, the defense has to continue to improve. Obviously, Caleb
RGIII Defends Caleb Williams Following Injury Criticism
14:40has to get back healthy. Um, but with that additional game, you're seeing more guys get hurt and they're like, "Oh, it's just one more game." Yeah, but there's 65 car crashes happening in that game. So if you put yourself through 65 more car crashes, >> yeah, >> you guys are going to get hurt a little bit more. So I just want him to take his
14:56time. It's a hamstring. Everybody got on him about, you know, how he reacted, whatever. [clears throat] Like >> what did you think is you've been in that situation? >> I've been in the situation. I didn't I actually didn't even comment on it because at the end of the day, when you when you see a guy get hurt, you don't
15:12know what the extent of that injury is. He probably didn't even know it was a hamstring. He he he might have thought it was something else. >> Definitely thought it was something else. And uh you know, you see Kobe, right, tears his Achilles, limps back to the free throw line, knocks him down. Everyone's like, "Oh, this guy's soft.
15:27This guy's this." And I really think it was just an excuse. Personally, I think people hate the fact that Caleb Williams paints his fingernails and and has his uh style that he likes to wear. And I think that's wrong. I think people who feel a certain type of way about that need to look in the mirror for
15:40themselves. >> Everyone's entitled to their opinion, but come on, man. Don't don't try to hide behind, oh, he's soft because of this, this, this, when, when, when, when, when, when, when, when, when, when, when you're really just attacking him cuz you don't like his character or what he maybe what he represents to other people. That to me is wrong. I got
15:54no problem with him getting carded off. I got no problem with him, you know, crying and being emotional. He cares. Don't we want people to care about their profession? And real men cry. We can have that discussion all you want. Real men cry. And he decided to cry in that moment. I'm I got no problem with it.
16:08>> There you go. And the the same people get mad if a quarterback doesn't show enough emotion, right? He's not mad enough about the loss. He's not, you know what I mean? He doesn't care enough. So, you you you get both sides for sure. The other team in the division been pretty disappointing to me. The Green Bay Packers.
16:21>> Oh god. Oh my goodness. Green Bay and
Packers’ Struggles, Jordan Love & Matt LaFleur
16:24Matt Laflur, he's my quarterback coach in Washington. I'm very fond of Matt. When I was going through some tough times in Washington, he was always there for me. The problem is he doesn't have an a quarterback anymore, right? Jordan Love isn't Aaron Rodgers. And I don't mean that from a talent perspective. We all know Aaron Rogers is one of the
16:40greatest ever. I don't mean that from an arm talent perspective. We all know Aaron Rogers probably throws the football better than anyone we've ever seen, right? But Aaron Rogers was also going to challenge Matt Laflur in ways that made him better. And and I found this out in every business deal that I do. There there's got to be a little bit
16:55of tension. Doesn't have to be destructive tension, but just a little bit like I'm demanding greatness out of you because this is what's affecting us on the field. And I need Jordan Love to to do that. He needs to be a little bit more of an so that if the play is not right, he gets it right. You you saw the
17:10clip of of Aaron Rogers. >> Yeah. Mike McCarthy Mike McCarthy on the field. I'm not saying do that. >> Can we get a little bit of that? A little bit of that because you have no Josh Jacobs anymore. >> Yeah. >> Right. Off the- field stuff is taking him out. You got no running game. They need you to be Superman now. You're in
17:27year you're not in year one anymore. We need you to be Superman when we don't have all of our, you know, DC legends. You know what I'm saying? And I think for Jordan Love, that's what it really boils down to. Otherwise, man, if they have a if they have a really bad year, you got Michael Parsons on Twitter, you
17:41know, tweeting about every team in the world doing podcasts. And I I'm a big
RGIII Calls Out Micah Parsons Over Podcasting During the Season
17:46proponent of guys who are in season who are active players should not have podcasts. It's not because competition. >> Hold on. If you get signed, you're not doing your podcast. >> I I would honestly I would stop it. >> All right. >> I would stop it just because uh for that locker room, you need that. So Micah, I
18:03don't know what he's I don't know how active he is on his current podcast, but he's super active on Twitter. And he's not talking about the Packers. He's talk free Cal Pitts. I'm like, bro, Cal Pitts plays for the Falcons. What are we doing right now? You should be focused on getting healthy. And I like Micah. I
18:17think Micah is great for the league. I think he's a great personality. I don't think Micah is always great for the locker room in season doing a podcast or talking about other teams. It's a distraction. And and I just I feel bad for for Matt, but him and uh Guda, if they don't have a if they can't
18:35resurrect this season, one of them is going to get fired. And that's just about that's just the truth. >> One or both? >> Could be both. And I would hate to see that cuz I think I do think they've done a nice job building the roster. But when you make a big bet like Josh Jacobs at running back last year, it paid off, but
18:48now off the field has taken him out and he's your bellcow. That's like taking Bejan away from the Falcons, Jir away from the Lions. Like these GMs, they know like, hey, this is our guy. If he goes down, we're kind of screwed. We got to figure something out. And right now, the Packers are they're really up the
19:04creek without a paddle. And they need Jordan Love to get in the water and start swimming and pushing the boat.
Should Green Bay Trade for Tony Pollard?
19:08>> Would you like to see the Packers go out and make a move for a running back? They said Tony Pard could be available. >> Tony Pard wouldn't be a wouldn't be a bad a bad idea at all. A proven back that you know you can you can get it done with. >> Also, Zack Tom went down with injury.
19:20They're [snorts] >> It just doesn't seem like they're a year. It doesn't feel like their year, but pack the Packers and the Cowboys have always been America's team. So, everyone has always felt like it's our year every year. So, they're not going to be good with them winning four games. They have to find a way to go make a
19:38move to get back, right? >> Don't have your picks. But who would help them? Brian Robertson Jr. is uh Bean's backup. He had three rushing touchdowns this past week. They're not going to get rid of him. >> Why would they Why would Why would they send him to Green Bay and help them out? So, if Tony Pard's available from the
19:53Titans cuz the Titans are horrible. I mean, good God, I feel that's so I feel so bad for Cam Ward. They are this guy. Tony Pard would be a good idea because he is he is a proven back that knows how to get it done. But I don't think he fixes the the Packers problem. >> No, I don't think so either. I feel bad
20:08for the Packers fans cuz they don't they can't even be like, "Oh, it's Tank and try to get Jeremiah Smith or something." They can't do anything. >> If they tank to get to try to get Jeremiah Smith, the coach and the GM are gone. But they their picks gone. Is the M. Oh, that's right. They don't have
20:24they don't have any picks because and Micah can't play for another M to ACL. >> Another month maybe. >> And they were planning on Micah being able to get in and help them on the playoff push. So, you got rid of all the picks and if they continue to lose the way that they are, the head coach and
20:41the GM are gone and the fans aren't going to love Micah. I mean, if you go look at Mike's mentions right now,
Micah Parsons’ Social Media Activity & Locker Room Concerns
20:45they're because he's they think he's focused on everything but what he needs to be focused on with the Packers and that I would take his social media away. [laughter] If I'm if I'm his agent, if I'm his team, it's like, "Hey, Micah, bro, chill." Those 11,000 or 20,000 likes and views, not worth it right now. Let our
21:01team is struggling. Stop talking about other teams. Stop talking about other players. Focus on your team, your locker room. There's one clip I know you're pretty I'm chronically online. So are you. There's a clip of Micah talking to the defense on the sideline and they're not listening to him. >> Yeah. >> Like that that is bothersome to me
21:20because he's supposed to be your leader in the locker room. >> And it's old themes coming back up with him. >> Yes. >> It's the same things that Cowboys fans were saying when he was supporting the Eagles players or he was doing his podcast. I remember that. >> And he was on the trainer table on the sideline. Then his brother is tweeting.
21:36And I mean, listen, they're probably going to try to kill us for everything that we're saying, but the b the bottom line is >> brother did it again during the Cowboys. Did you see that? >> I didn't see that. What do you do? >> So the the Cowboys were down to the Texans. He's like, without Micah, y'all
21:47keep getting blown out. >> Oh my god. Well, the Packers are getting blown out without Micah, too. So [laughter] >> Cowboys came back and won. And >> our job is to as players is to win games, but we're entertainers, right? Fans pay their hard-earned money to come watch us. It's why we have a job and we get to do these podcasts and have fun.
22:03But the fans also have this irrational belief that we hate the rival as much as they do. Every player you've ever see go
Why NFL Players Need to Respect Their Rivalries
22:12to a press conference, they say, "Man, we got the best fans in the world." And I'm just like, "Guys, come on. Every fan base can't be the best fan base in the world." And you see guys go on multiple teams. Hey, I'm playing with the Lions, man. The Lions are the best fans ever. They play for the Commanders. Man, the
22:23Commanders are the best fans ever. And I always would get confused by that, but I understand it now. What do you have to gain by going to play for the Commanders and saying the Cowboys fans are the best ever? But you know what you can really do? If I'm a Cowboys player and I have a podcast in season and we just played the
22:36Eagles and I bring on Darius Slay. Love Darius. What's up my guy? I bring him on and we're just giggling and laughing on the podcast. The fans are watching that like, yo, whoa, whoa, aren't you supposed to hate this guy? Or at least make us think you hate the guy in season. And that's where Micah has kind
22:52of pulled that back to say, nah, we're cool. You know, I'm going to talk to all these guys. We're going to have a good time and then when we go play, may the best man win. No fan wants to hear that. >> No. Absolutely not. It's so it's every sport. It's not even just football. >> Not just football.
23:05>> You see it with fighters. The UFC Dana is all mad. You know, Ian Gary's way too nice. Tennis, they get mad when Alz [laughter] and Sinner aren't, you know, don't hate each other. But the reality is the athletes don't feel the same way you do. Nine times out of 10, there are certain >> your Kobes and your MJs who are
23:20legitimately a little bit deranged and that's why they're the goats, right? But, you know, for the most part, not the case. >> Look at soccer or as the the rest of the world calls it, football. Messi and Ronaldo. Maybe if I I could be wrong, but I don't think I've ever seen like a clip of Messi and Ronaldo like hanging
23:36out. >> Dude, they dropped one picture of them like playing chess and it's the most liked picture in the history of Instagram, >> right? And and they're probably thinking to themselves, "These guys are mother each other as they're moving on the board." But I I don't I haven't really seen videos or clips of them like dapping it up, saying what's up to each
23:52other, giggling, laughing. Like they take the rivalry as serious as the fans do. And they and fans want us as players to do the same. And I would say even if you don't feel that way, you can never in wrestling they call it KFAB, right? You can never exit that. >> Absolutely. >> You got to make the fan believe, no, I'm
24:09a cowboy. I hate the Eagles. I hate the commanders. I hate the Giants. And then, you know, when you retire and you're Justin Tuck and you're working at, you know, I forgot the firm that he's working at, but um Mel Lynch or something. Yeah, Morgan Stanley. H no problem. Have have fun with it. But when you're in character, cuz that's what we
24:24are. We're players. We're doing this for a living. We love the game, but we are in character when we are wearing that uniform. Stay in character. You cannot pull that back and the fans actually still believe in you. >> So, you live that motto when you were playing at Baylor at watch cuz you you resonated. I mean, you had an
24:39unbelievable amount of brand deals before you ever stepped on an NFL field. Correct. Right. I mean, I was watching you at Baylor. I was playing with you in in NCAA, [laughter] right? And I I'm God, it was 2011, right? I was 9 years old. >> 2011. >> You couldn't have told me any different. Robert wasn't the greatest thing to ever
24:55live. I mean, how is Andrew Luck going to go no more over this guy? Look at him. But you had that that swagger and
RGIII Reveals His History with Andrew Luck
25:00that aura like you were in character. >> Yeah. And and and and I I'll tell you this story and I I've told it before, but I haven't told it in this way. But when you talk about like staying in character, so Andrew Luck, me and Andrew, uh we didn't grow up together, but Texas, I was in Coppers Cove, Texas.
25:16I believe he was in in the Houston area. And Andrew, we were always compared to each other. Robert Griffin the third did this, Andrew Luck did this. I was uh recruited by Stanford. Andrew was was already committed to Stanford. Jim Harbaugh was the head coach. He came in. Andrew was committed before he came in, but he brought me in cuz he wanted me to
25:33be his quarterback. So, I'm sitting there, I'm like, man, we're both from Texas. We're constantly being compared to each other. And now this coach wants both of us. We're both four-star guys. I was rated uh the number three dual threat and uh Angel, in my opinion, was only rated a pocket passer because he was I that was stupid. He was definitely
25:50a dual threat guy who could run as well. >> By the way, the opposite applies. They act like CJ Strad's the super mobile guy. >> Exactly. So, it's like I mean that's a great point. CJ's mobile, but he's not Lamar Jackson, right? As we go through college, the same things are happening. Freshman All-American, Andrew sits out his freshman year cuz he's he's uh he
26:11red shirts. Then we're going through the draft process. RG3 and Andrew Luck. And I just felt like when the Heisman ceremony came around, we won the Heisman at Baylor. Andrew came in second. I think the kayab part of it and the in character part of it made Andrew Luck in a way not want to be tight with me with Andrew. I I offered
Andrew Luck Snubs RGIII’s Heisman Celebration
26:33to all the Heisman guys. It was myself, Tyron Matthew, Andrew Luck, Trenton Richardson, and Monty Balls. Right. That's a he heck of a of a list of Heisman finalists. After the Heisman, you have two options. You can go uh in a limo by yourself with your family, your friends, your team, or you can get limos for everybody. So, I picked, hey,
26:52everybody, we're all going to go out. We're going to go out in New York. We're going to have a good time. You know, everybody, I believe, was of age. I was 21. The only person who didn't come was Andrew Luck. Now, we did end up seeing him later that night after we had bounced around to a couple clubs, uh,
27:07just by happen stance. But I believe in my heart, and I would love to have that conversation. Maybe we can have that conversation with Andrew as to like why didn't you come with the rest of us that night. I think it's because hey, he he's supposed to not get along with me because we're competitors and it's like
27:24no at that point man it's over. Like we won the Heisman. Baylor won the Heisman Trophy. Stanford didn't get didn't get it. I know he was think his second year in a row being the runner up. But don't let that get in the way of once we're out of character we can be cool. That that was always interesting to me. But I
27:38took it that way. But once we're off the field behind closed doors having a good time, nah, we're good. But if we're on that field, bro, I'm not about to come up and like giggle and laugh with you after you win a game or you beat us like, "No, I'm mad. I'm very upset." >> Did you feel like you got snubbed that
27:53night in that moment? Did it become personal? >> No. For me, it never became personal, but I knew it. I, you know, I got snubbed. You know, basically, I was told, you know, years later that the the reason that he didn't come was because he he was upset. obviously didn't win the Heisman, but he was upset that uh uh
28:08he didn't win it and didn't want to hang out with me. And I'm just like, "All right, man." But I've seen Andrew since I've talked to his family, talked to his wife, and he's been great. And you know, Andrew ended up retiring early, and I respected the heck out of that. And how I view Andrew Luck is I think he's one
28:24of the greatest uh what if stories in the NFL. I think I'm one of the greatest what if stories in NFL history as well. He retired early. I got hurt. And I just think for for him and me that would be a great and powerful sit down to kind of talk through all those things. He's at Stanford now as the the general manager
28:41there and you know trying to get that program back on track but 100% I felt snubbed in that moment because I was just trying to be a team player and he didn't want any part of that and I think it was because of just the competitiveness off on the field. >> Did Andrew going number one over you
28:56give you a chip on your shoulder during your rookie season and were you comparing yourself to him throughout the process? I never I always say, you know,
Going No. 2 Behind Andrew Luck in the NFL Draft
29:03winners focus on themselves and losers focus on other people. So, as a player, never compared myself to to any other players. Just tried to be the best version of me that I could be. Um, but to say like, hey, here we're going one and two and here's the Heisman Trophy winner and then here's the guy that got
29:19runner up. Yes, I thought that >> Well, there's that J. >> It gave me that chip on the shoulder. >> It reminds me of Jimmy Butler. He told me he's like Tobias over me, [laughter] >> right? you go through that rookie year and we win rookie of the year at at uh with the Washington Redskins at the
29:35time, now the Commanders. And for me, like the team felt the same way. Like my team didn't want me to be in Indianapolis, right? They just knew like, hey, when you win the Heisman Trophy and they don't pick you first and they pick you second and they take the guy that got finished behind you first, yeah, you're going to feel a certain
29:50type of way about that. Never compared, but certainly wanted to have that matchup. I never got that matchup. We had it in the preseason, but you know, >> that would have been legendary. >> It would have been a legendary a legendary thing, but I I ended up not being um I was hurt when we had a chance
30:04to play the Colts a few years later. So, never compared myself to Andrew. Um just not the way that I that I'm wired, but certainly had a chip on my shoulder to say, I'm going to go prove it. And we
RGIII’s Biggest Career What-If & Washington’s Mistakes
30:15were able to do that. And obviously, injuries uh derailed my career. >> Two of the greatest what if stories. Absolutely. When you say what if about your career, is it what if I was drafted to a different team or do you think you're just a victim of circumstance that was always going to happen? >> I don't think I I I never like to look
30:30at it as like a victim victim mindset. Uh for me, it's more of everything that happened happened for a reason. How are you going to respond to that? All right. Now, you want to get to the nitty-gritty of it. Would my career have been different if I got drafted to the Indianapolis Colts? Yes, it would have been different. Would it have been what
30:44God called for me to go through? Probably not. The way the Colts attacked it gave Andrew what he needed to be successful for the long haul. I went into a situation where my coach and the GM were both on the hot seat immediately and needed to win now. And we did, but that was also at the expense of uh
31:03caution, should I say. It's why I'm
Mentoring Lamar Jackson & Playing Through Injuries
31:05always so When I was in Baltimore with Lamar Jackson, he had a couple injuries. I was his I was his backup and his mentor for three years. And it's like, hey, should I play through this? No. I'm not saying don't play through a hangail. I'm not saying if you stub your toe on the side of the bed and don't play
31:19anymore. There's a difference between being hurt and being injured. In 2012, I was injured and I played. I wasn't hurt and just like, let's just tough it out. And there's times where Lamar was hurt and I advised him not to play. When I left, there were times when he was hurt or inj or should I say, there's time
31:36when he was injured and I told him not to play. If you're hurting, everybody's hurting. you're going to play in those games and you're going to make the best out of it cuz no one's truly 100%. So for me it was more of a case of I was injured and in hindsight being 2020 I shouldn't have even played in 2013 came
31:52back too soon. I had an ACL and an LCL injury trying to be the gladiator and trying to be you know you you poke your chest out and like I'm a man I can do this. You put yourself in situations that you shouldn't be in. And for me, it was like, man, I wish I was in a a
32:07mentor to myself or a coach in that situation. I'm telling that player, no, you're not playing right now. If I'm the doctors, I'm saying, you're not playing right now until you're 100% healthy. That wasn't my situation. It didn't happen that way. And ultimately, it derailed my career, but I was still able to to fight and get eight years in the
32:26NFL despite it not going the way that I wanted it to go or the way that anyone wanted it to go. um outside of you know the the ma massive success um of our of the rookie year. >> No, absolutely. And then it's just a totally different landscape today even though it wasn't that long ago. >> Yeah, I know.
32:42>> The player rules are so different. They're wearing guardian helmets. I couldn't picture a team making a guy play through an injury like that, especially a franchise quarterback today. But yeah, it's just everything's changed so much. >> Yeah, I think you're you're spot on there. No one no one is uh allowing their quarterbacks to to play injured in
33:01the way that I was allowed to play. I don't want to say forced to play. I wasn't forced to play cuz I wanted to play, but I was allowed to play. >> But at some point, you got to protect the players from themselves. >> Got to protect the players from

RGIII Reveals the Hardest Hit He Ever Took in the NFL
34:13time. There's boots and keepers when you fake to the back and then you round around the other side of the defense. So I saw Demarcus on the right side and I'm like please don't come please don't come my way cuz he we I knew he was unblocked and him being unblocked a lot of times defensive ends will just chase down the
34:29line cuz they're trying to stop the run. That's their responsibility that D gap. They have to close that D gap. But I knew from film study Demarcus Wear didn't care about the D gap. You know what Demarcus Wear cared about? Hits on the quarterback. So when I did the fake, the the thing they always teach you as a
34:45quarterback is as you come off the fake, get your head around. Get your head around so you can see what's coming. I do the fake, man. Demarcus where is like where you're at by the time by the time I turn around, he's where you're at. So I got my eyes around and I'm able to make the throw, but because he's so
34:59close, I had to jump back. So I make the throw and I'm jumping. Demarcus wear hit me so hard, picked me up, and drove me into the ground with his shoulder. Now today, he'd be in jail. All right. [laughter] They would they would he would be in jail if he hit me the way he hit me on that day. But back then you
35:18could do that. I the only way I was going to make the throw was to jump back. So I make the throw. We get the completion. It's like a 15 17 yard completion. So it didn't hurt as bad because we got a good gain. But I couldn't breathe for like the next four plays. >> Oh [laughter] my god.
35:30>> Because he and I'm almost felt like he separated all my ribs and he kind of got up and like after he hit me he was just laughing. [laughter] I'm like, "Okay, the black kids probably sounded like I had a helium from a balloon cuz I couldn't breathe." Unfortunately for them, we still beat
Growing Up a Broncos Fan & Tim Tebow’s Impact
35:46their So, [laughter] >> we're shooting this here in Texas. Did you grow up a Cowboys fan? >> I did not, actually. I grew up a Denver Broncos fan. So, shout out to Tim Tibo for ruining my opportunity to play for the Denver Broncos. The year before I was drafted, T-Bo became the starter when the Broncos were struggling and
36:04then he took him to the playoffs and he had t-boing and he um he had the touchdown pass to Dearius Thomas against the the Steelers. >> Rest in peace. >> Rest in peace to to DT. So he kind of ruined that for me. But I was a Bronco fan, little contrarian, a little bit of a rebel. I was born in Okinawa, Japan.
36:19So if my Japanese brothers and sisters see this, please I want to come back over there. Maybe we can come over there double coverage and have some fun. When I got to Texas, um I wasn't really a football fan at that time and the Broncos were dominating. John Elway, Terrell Davis, Rod Smith, Ed McAffrey, >> Shannon, Shannon Sharp as well. Well,
36:38this is the Super Bowl between the Packers and the Broncos and everyone in the school picked the Packers. I'm like, I'm going with [snorts] the Broncos. So, that made me a fan of the Broncos. They ended up winning that Super Bowl and I was a fan for the Broncos literally all the way up until 2011. And then when
36:51[clears throat] I got drafted, I dropped my fandom because once you're in the league, you have to play and give that fan base everything you have. And I gave Washington my knee, my head, everything. And I don't think I would have been able to do that if I was fanboying the Broncos while I was >> That would be tough. Are you fanboying
37:07the Broncos now or are you more neutral? >> I'm more neutral now because once you play, and I played for eight seasons, the fandom kind of goes away. So now, yes, I follow the Commanders. I follow the Baltimore Ravens. I follow the Cleveland Browns, the three teams that I played for. Deep down inside, the kid in me still roots for the Broncos, but I
37:24don't have like a favorite team. I have
RGIII’s Relationship with the Washington Commanders
37:27to cover the entire league. And the only way that I can cover it objectively is if I'm not a fan of any particular team. >> Yeah. I was wondering about the Commanders, like your feelings. Are they mixed? I mean, they have new ownership. >> Yep. New ownership. Listen, I got mad love for the city. It's a weird thing
37:43when you go to Washington. They're building the new RFK, so it's back in it'll be back in Washington DC soon. But you practice in Virginia and you play in Maryland. When I fly in, they fly me into Dallas airport and it's in Virginia. And I'm like, why are we in Virginia? They take me to Ashurn, Virginia. I'm like, okay, again, why are
37:59we in Ashurn? I'm thinking Washington Redskins, Washington Commanders. We're in Washington DC. No, not even close. Every home game feels like an away game because you're driving an hour and a half to get to the stadium. I have mad love for the city. Mad love for the DMV. I I was honored to be able to play for
38:15both the Baltimore Ravens and the Washington Commanders, Redskins, however you guys want to feel. I know a lot of fans hate the name. >> A lot of fans hate if you don't use that name. >> If you don't use a name, exactly. There's no winning. >> There's no winning in that situation. But I have a mad love for them.
38:29Organizationally, they've been great to me, invited me to all types of things. They've incorporated me. The intro for Josh Harris, uh opening up the stadium in the first uh ownership group. they did a video with me that I got to go to the stadium and do for them. So, I couldn't be, you know, more grateful to them. And at the end of the day, listen,
38:48up until 2017, I was very, very upset with the team because of what happened with myself. But that year, I was out of the league and I had to make a decision. How do I want to live my life? And sometimes in life, things are not going to go your way and they're not going to be rosy, but you are in charge of how
39:05you respond. And I had to let it go. So, in letting that go, it allowed me to to have joy back playing the game. It's why I went and joined the Ravens in 2018. It's why I cover the game now. Um, because I love it. Football blessed me with so much. So, even though my tenure in Washington didn't fulfill what I
39:23wanted it to or what everyone else wanted it to, I'm still grateful. They changed my life forever. My family is taken care of forever because I was drafted by the Washington Redskins. >> It's a beautiful mindset >> because of the people in that city. I love those people. The real ones tell me how much they love me back and I just
39:40want them to know that I appreciate that. >> Now you are a college football commentator. Are you still a Baylor Bear deep deep down >> when I'm not calling games? Yeah. >> Yes. Like I'm so happy right now. Baylor
How RGIII Helped Recruit DJ Lagway to Baylor
39:52is 4 and one. You know, no one's talking about him. That's fine. Don't talk about him. DJ Lagway just had the greatest game of his career. >> You got to talk to Lagway and >> I mentor Lagway and I've mentored DJ for six years now. Um he reached out to me. Were you part of the reason why he's at
40:07Baylor now? >> Yes. I cannot take complete credit for that. David Aranda, the head coach, Keon Hall, they're they're, you know, massive recruiting guy. He's their running back coach, but associate head coach. He's done a great job. DJ's dad, Derek Lagway, and his and his mom. They've done an incredible job with him. So, I can't I don't take credit for anybody's
40:24stuff. Did I talk to DJ about going to Baylor? Yes. Did I talk to his family about going to Baylor? Yes. Did I get a call from the team to ask me to talk to them about going to Baylor? Yes. I like to consider myself the closer. So, that's my job. My job is to help the university as much as I can. I always
40:42thought DJ should have went to Baylor out of high school. Ultimately, he decided to go to Florida, and I don't ever get in the way of any of those those decisions. So, I've been honored to be able to mentor DJ over the years, talked to him in the good times and the bad. Never abandoned him. That's not my
40:55job. And uh I'm happy for him to be experiencing the success that he is now. And it benefits Baylor. So, if I'm not calling a Baylor game, I am a Baylor fan. That is 1,000%. >> I I figured it had to be the case. >> I want the university to to do great. I'm honored to be able to call both
41:10college games and NFL games with Fox Sports. So, I get to do both and enjoy it and I enjoy it a lot.
Is Jeremiah Smith the Greatest College WR Ever?
41:17>> And you just said something I want to go over. Jeremiah Smith. >> Yes. >> He's Heisman. He's the best receiver in the country. Do you do you find it close? [sighs] The Heisman is not an award you can win in week five, but I I said that Jeremiah Smith is the greatest receiver in college football history. He's the best
41:34player in the country, and the Heisman is his to lose. I'm all about Kamario Taylor at Mississippi State. Jeff Lebby is doing an incredible job with those guys. Kamario, uh, I don't think anybody throws the deep ball better than Kamario right now. And an incredible story. them losing the way they lost to Alabama opened up the floodgates for Jeremiah
41:52Smith, who has more receiving yards right now than 22 FBS teams. Let me repeat, more receiving yards as an individual than 22 FBS teams. 44 catches. I think he's got 833 yards, nine touchdowns, back-to-back 200 yard games, unguardable. And if you see Jeremiah Smith in person, have you seen
42:13him in person? >> I have not. >> If you see this guy in person, he does not look like a wide receiver. He literally looks like a defensive end. I walked past him at a overtime event OT7. You know, my team uh RG3 is in that is in that league and they're like, "Oh, there's Jeremiah Smith." And I'm looking
42:27around. I'm like, "Where where's he at?" Thought, "No, no, no. That guy." I'm like, "What? The guy looks like a defensive end. He's massive." I would never put a DB, a safety, or a corner in one-on-one with that guy. >> There's another guy I wouldn't put one-on-one with any DB line anyone. That's Malachi Tony for the Miami
42:47Hurricane. >> I love Malachi Tony. Malachi Tony was on my my Heisman list early in the year. He's kind of slowed down a little bit. So >> a little slower game against Clemson. >> So Darien Mensah has is on my list. >> Yeah, but Darien Mensah, he's my Heisman. [laughter] >> Come on. >> Listen, I love Darren Mensah. Daren
43:02Mensah, whatever they paid him, it was worth it. All right. The dude four games >> 90% completion percentage. He can't miss a pass. >> Four games into the season, he had more touchdowns than incompletions. Yeah, Malachi Tony. If you put Malachi Tony over here and Jeremiah Smith over here, you're dealing with two different beasts.
Jeremiah Smith vs. Malachi Toney & NFL Comparisons
43:19>> Exactly. >> Jeremiah, massive hard cover jump ball guy. I just saw Iowa cuz I'm calling the Iowa game uh against Washington this weekend. I just was watching tape. The DB played a play perfectly and Jeremiah Smith went and caught the ball and snatched it away. He's just a bully. Malachi Tony is an impossible cover. Quick twitch in and out of his brakes.
43:41um very hard to stay with, but you got a 6'4 giant and then a guy that's, you know, probably what 5'11ish. So, they win in different ways, but both of them will be first round picks. >> But Malachi Tony can win in maybe more ways. So, you can put this guy at running back, you can put him in the
43:56slot, he returns, he can maybe play quarterback. >> Well, I mean, I would not [laughter] I would not doubt that Malachi Tony can play quarterback. The dude can do whatever he wants. Could you imagine Jeremiah Smith at running back? Oh my god. >> I'm not saying he can't do it. Jeremiah plays inside and out. Malachi, to your
44:11point, plays inside, outside, in the back field, and he's a he's more of a Swiss Army knife. >> Exactly. No, like a Tyreek when he entered the NFL with the Chiefs. >> 100%. Now, Tyreek's elite speed is the >> You got a Tyreek light guy and a Julio light guy to me. >> I agree. I I think and listen, you can't
44:29forecast what a guy is going to be, but Jeremiah Smith could be better than Julio Jones. That's how dynamic of a player he is. And I think Julio would be the first one to tell you like, "Yeah, that guy's got it. He could become that level of greatness. He has the potential to be better than Randy Moss, Terrell
44:44Owens, Jerry Rice, Julio Jones, and all it comes down to is staying healthy. Those big guys tend to not stay as healthy as long as Jerry Rice did. >> Yeah, >> Jeremiah is going to run he might run 4-3. Maybe he might run 42. He is fast. He is big. Can he stay healthy for the duration of his career obviously in
45:04college, but also in the NFL? that will determine whether or not he becomes the greatest of all time. Right now, I think he's already the greatest of all time in college. >> So, if he has a healthy 15 years in the NFL, Jeremiah Smith goes down as the greatest wide receiver in NFL history. >> He's the goat. He's the goat. And
45:18whatever team gets him, I I think because of his level of cheat codeism, remember the cheat codes you used to have on the video games? I don't even know if they have them anymore uh with all the online play, but the cheat codes we used to have back in the day, you put all the cheat codes in, that's Jeremiah
45:29Smith. Whatever team gets him, there's teams that are right now thinking to themselves, damn, how do we lose 15 games? We could get Jeremiah Smith. They will win a Super Bowl. 100%. >> Wow. That's high praise. >> It's high praise, but I think it's warranted. I've never seen anybody like him. >> You went in a different direction. It
45:44wasn't You weren't dis but you just said he needs a little bit more time. Arch
Why Arch Manning Should Stay in College
45:47Manning. Yes. Quarterback Texas. Why do you think he should stay in college for another year? >> I say this and you're talking I was with uh Colin Coward. When I went into my last year of college, I knew it was my last season. The way I prepared was like it was my last season and you can never
46:02predict anything. But my goal was instead of just competing, let's dominate. How can I dominate? Talk to my coaches about it. Talk to the strength staff about it. They're like, "Hey, we need you to get stronger." Boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom. I went from doing seven reps on 225 to 19 in the in the summer between
46:19my red shirt sophomore year and my red shirt junior year. All right. Boom. Check that off the list. All right. What do I need to do better, coach? Hey, you need to throw the deep ball at a higher percentage completion-wise. Cool. We completed 70% of our deep balls that season. All right. instead of just saying, "All right, let's just try to
46:34get 10 yards. Let's try to do this or two. How do I dominate the game?" And I don't think Arch is there yet. I don't think the game is easy for Arch. When I stepped on the field the the year we won the Heisman, the game was easy. I mean, we didn't win all of our games. I'm not
46:46saying that we did. We lost three games, but the game was easy. It was like taking candy from a baby. And right now, it doesn't look like that way for Arch. It looked like that way for CJ Strad. It looked like that for Jir Gibbs his last year. It looked like that for Bryce Young his last year. It looked like that
47:00for Cam Newton at Auburn. >> Oh yeah. >> So for me, I'm like when I watch Arch play, I see the talent. It's there. He can play off schedule. He can throw the deep ball, but he's struggling in things that let me know if he goes to the league now, it'll be detrimental to his to his growth.
47:16>> No, I got to I agree with you 100%. So on all he has the luxury, privilege, whatever you want to say, being in the Manning family, >> he gets that extra time to develop. I mean, now with the NIL, it's a different story, but we've had, you know, players in the past who got to, you know, make
47:30it to the NFL to feed their family, literally. >> Now, they're still making millions of dollars, but there is a big jump going to the NFL from college. I mean, you're talking about he would be $100 million man fast. Yes. >> But yeah, I do agree that he would benefit from an extra year in college. >> Yeah. Why not? The Mannings have all
47:44used all their eligibility. Yeah. >> So, why why not give yourself another opportunity to come back? They're like, "Oh, what about draft st? What if he's the is he the first pick in the draft right now?" I don't think he is. One, I think Jeremiah Smith is. Two, I think Darien Mensah is the first quarterback right now. And the second quarterback is
48:00Drew Mestomaker. So, come back for another year. Allow yourself to continue to develop. Be the starting quarterback for the Texas Longhorns. Like, that's like one of the most prestigious opportunities in a lifetime. >> Absolutely. And I I still want to go over a little bit more of the NFL and
RGIII Defends Brock Purdy & the San Francisco 49ers
48:12then we're going to get out of here. >> Okay. >> I'm taking a victory lap a little bit. The 49ers start. >> Okay. >> I've been a Brock party guy for a long time. I told Chris Carter, he's the most disrespected player in the NFL. that [laughter] people insist he's a system guy, >> correct? >> And he's past the system and they're
48:30ignoring the things he does with his legs, with his second reads. He's looking guys off. He's not a basic guy. He's not a one read quarterback. Correct. He's a multiple read quarterback who gets disrespected because he's Mr. irrelevant. Yep. Right. And the guys he followed in the footsteps of Jimmy G and these other guys who aren't anywhere near as good as
48:45him. They're just So [laughter] >> talk to me about Brock Birdie and the 49ers start. It's um I love Brock Pury. I'm a Brock party guy. You're spot on. I don't want anyone to think that it boils down to just race. It doesn't boil down to just race. We've talked about it. CJ Stra gets characterized as a mobile guy
49:04to some people just because he's he is mobile, but he's not mobile like Lamar Jackson. Brock Pury is putting on for all the short kings. Okay, I I I love Brock Pury. He's short. >> Heightest. >> There you go. They're not just elitist, they're heightist. Brock is short, but what Brock Perie does so well is he plays with great rhythm and timing. He's
49:23not sneaky athletic. You'll never hear me say that. I hate that term. You're either athletic or you're not athletic. >> Absolutely. He's athletic. >> He's athletic. He is not sneaky athletic. That's calling him. Okay. And I think Brock being short, being Mr. Irrelevant, not having a Josh Allen type arm, all these things are painted against him as if he's not good. So what
49:44does he do? He just goes out and he cons consistently win games. consistently wins games, puts his team in position to win, runs when he's supposed to, makes the right throw when he has to. And I think when you look at Brock Pury, they say system quarterback. Well, I would ask you at home and you, who isn't a
50:01system quarterback? What did Tom Brady do when he went to Tampa Bay? Did he just say, you know what, I'm going to run Bruce Aren's offense. I'm going to I'm just going to come in and whatever you want, coach, I'm going to do it. No. He brought his system. When Pton Manning went from the Colts to the Broncos, did
50:13he just go there and be like, "Yep, you know what, Coach John F. I'm just gonna run whatever offense. You're a defensive guy, but I'm gonna run the offense that you want me to run." No. He brought his system with him. Every quarterback is a system quarterback. They have a system that works for them. And Brock Pury is
50:28the perfect guy to run Kyle Shanahan's system. He can run just enough and he can make all the throws that Kyle wants him to make in the rhythm and timing of the play. It's time that everybody stops hating on Brock Perie and just accept the fact that he's one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL. >> He's an elite quarterback.
50:43>> Elite. He is elite. He's an elite quarterback. You're not gonna I'm not going to be here and tell you any different. People hate on him because they say anybody can play that well in Kyle Shanahan's offense. Not anybody. Jimmy Garopppolo did. Don't get me wrong, he did. But where did Jimmy come up short in the playoffs? Brock has only
50:57come up short in the playoffs when he's hurt. >> And if they're healthy, which is a big if, that's a Super Bowl team. >> You hear guys say this all the time. There's quarterbacks that you can win with and there's quarterbacks that you win because of. Tom Brady was a quarterback that you won with the first three Super Bowls that he won. And then
51:15he turned into a quarterback you win because of. Brock Py hasn't won a Super Bowl yet, but I think he has made that transition from a quarterback you can win with to a quarterback you win because of. >> When they went to the Super Bowl against the Chiefs, they were with him. Now, it would be be because of him.
51:30>> It'd be because of him. a different plate as opposed to Christian McCaffrey. Please help me George KD. Debo Samuel. All these guys. Debo's back. But Debo ain't the Debo from a few years ago. George ain't the George from a few years ago. >> Yeah, but he's always better when he's a
51:51Niners uniform on. >> Oh, he he looks he looks better. He looks skinnier. I don't know. [laughter] Is the is the slimming or something? I don't know what it is, but he looks he looks way better. But to your point, stop the disrespect for Brock Party. He's that dude. >> Anything else you want to get off your
52:06chest? Is you like to get a little out
Podcasting, Family Boundaries & Giving Back
52:08of pocket sometimes? Anyone you want to call out? >> Anyone I want to call out? >> Any you know any topics you want to touch on? You're one of my favorite Twitter followers. >> No, I appreciate it. >> You're not shy. >> I'm not shy. >> You're not shy at all. You do milk and cookies. [laughter] >> I'm not shy. I do I do believe that as
52:27we're going through this whole uh you know content creation and podcasting and all that families are off limits, wives and children are always off limits. And I think that you know at at the end of the day what we do you know we talked about this off air is we want to have fun. We want to cover people tell their
52:44stories the right way. We're going to have a good time. I don't mind getting out of pocket. I don't mind making fun fun fun references online but ultimately it comes back to what are you doing in your community and helping people give back. So for us, what we do at the RG3 Foundation is help with food insecurity.
52:57Um we have a a seven on team that, you know, the most of our our guys don't have to pay for because we take care of them from a foundation standpoint. So they can travel the world, travel the US, play play games and and be able to give back to their community in the right way. So food insecurity is a
53:12number one issue in a lot of communities. >> Um you talk about underprivileged youth, abused women and children, military families, they just don't have the the five meals a day that they need. So, we decided to take that that battle on for ourselves. And, you know, if anybody wants to help us out with that, you know, you can go to just the
53:29rg3ports.com and go to the the foundation ticker and you can donate there and we'll have more stuff that's developing. >> Absolutely. I love any charity drives or anything like that. And I've always said like even if I had my struggles growing up, I never went to bed hungry. Right. >> And that that's a massive advantage and that's something that that no child or
53:46any person, but especially children shouldn't have to go. >> No, 100%. Other than that, what do you think about the Eagles? Ah, Lane
Eagles’ Struggles & Why Jalen Hurts Isn’t to Blame
53:52Johnson's gone. They're They're toast. >> You think they're toast? >> I think they're a bit dead in the water. It's not going right for Philly. I mean, Saquon's hurt. They got Will Shipley coming in. Lane Johnson, what's the record without him? It's bad. It's really bad. >> It is. It's like 18 and 30 without >> Yeah, it's like 18 and 30. It might
54:09become 18 and 31 if they play Jacksonville Jaguars. They look out of sync. Sean Manion, first year play caller with Jaylen Herz. They are not on the same page. Devont Smith's out for a few weeks. Dallas Goddard's hurt. Nothing's going right. >> So, those are the two things I' I'd want to get off my chest. One, the Eagles.
54:24Eagles fans, hear me out. You got to stop blaming Jaylen Herz. Honestly, it's never any nothing is ever good enough for in Philly, and that's all how they've always been. But this guy led you to two Super Bowls, one year Super Bowl. Nickian's won your Super Bowl. Um Shawn Manion has to be better. It's he's four games into calling plays. I'm not
54:40saying he's he's never going to be a good coach. What I am saying is he's got to be better at game planning. And if you can't win with Jaylen Herz, you can't win with anybody. The second thing is Michigan, one of the biggest alumni bases in the world, and they have completely failed Bryce Underwood. Michigan actually offered me a job two
54:53years ago to be Bryce Underwood's quarterback coach. I ended up turning it
RGIII Reveals Michigan Coaching Offer & Defends Bryce Underwood
54:55down. Thank god I did for whatever for everything that happened there. But you can't bring in a head coach like Kyle Whittingham and an offensive coordinator like Jason Beck who have no experience developing an NFL type quarterback that Bryce Underwood has the potential to be. I know there's some rumors around that maybe they might bench him, maybe they
55:14might move on from him. They've guaranteed this guy $12 million in NIL deal. It's not about the money. He is so talented. They have to build the system around what he does best, not what they they think their offense should be. And I think Kyle Woodingham's a great coach. Uh Jason Beck has had extreme success as an offensive coordinator.
55:29>> Well, you got the players calling out Jason Beck on DM. >> Yes. And it's and that's always a bad bad situation, but Bryce Underwood, he starts with his arm and he finishes with his legs. They can't keep running an offense that makes him start with his legs. I would love to see them, you know, take the by-week, build it around
55:46what he does best because you can't punish your quarterback who's failing when you failed them. >> It's almost like throwing the baby out with the bathwater. >> Exactly. >> Right. And obviously there's so much big news in Bryce Hunter when it comes to Michigan. Dave Portoy gets behind him. They raise the money, but then the next step is where they failed. Okay. What do
56:04we do now? >> What are we doing now? And you saw it with JJ McCarthy. um he was able to develop and become a first round pick, but with Bryce, it just never got to that point. I don't think it's a lost cause. I don't think it's a lost cause, but they have to do some massive soularching and stop pointing the finger
56:19at the 19-year-old. >> Couldn't have said it better myself. My guy RG3. Yes, sir.
Outro
56:24>> Double coverage. [laughter] >> Double coverage is presented by DraftKings. The crown is yours.
