0:01good thing?
0:08Hey guys, it's me, Eagan Douglas, and
0:10today I want to talk to you about being
0:13spiritual and what that means. Now, when
0:16the Bible talks about being spiritual,
0:17it usually talks about it in reference
0:19to like being spiritual as opposed to
0:22being fleshly. To be spiritual means to
0:26like follow God and do what he says. And
0:29to be fleshly means to like follow your
0:32gut, follow your instincts, just do what
0:34your body wants you to do. To be
0:36spiritual means to focus on spiritual
0:38things instead of physical things.
0:40Spiritual things being like, you know,
0:43loving your neighbor, loving God, doing
0:45what God wants you to do, focusing on
0:47what lasts as opposed to focusing on,
0:50you know, what the what the flesh wants,
0:51the physical stuff, cuz physical stuff
0:53doesn't last. Instead of focusing on
0:55money or power, we should focus on love
0:57and kindness. But to be spiritual also
0:59just means to like recognize that there
1:01is something beyond what we can see and
1:05measure. I know that I have a soul. I
1:07know that God is real. I know that
1:10angels and demons and the spiritual
1:11battle that's all around us, I know that
1:13that is real. And the people who are
1:15unspiritual don't believe that there's
1:16anything beyond this this physical
1:19world. And most of the people that I
1:20interact with who are not Christians
1:24fall into that unspiritual category
1:26where they just don't they don't really
1:28believe anything. I would consider
1:29myself a very spiritual person, or at
1:32least I want to be. I want to be more
1:34spiritual than I am right now. Every day
1:37I want to be drawing closer and closer
1:38to God. So yeah, I'd consider myself a
1:40spiritual person, but but it's a it's a
1:42struggle, it's a fight. I've known for a
1:44long time that being unspiritual is not
1:46the way I want to be. Being unspiritual
1:49is not the right way to be. But it only
1:51occurred to me recently that sometimes
1:53being spiritual is not the way to be
1:55either, at least by certain definitions.
1:58In my class at school this year, we all
2:00went around the room and everybody
2:01introduced themselves and there's this
2:03girl that I didn't know named River. And
2:05when she was introducing herself, she
2:07she said that she was a very spiritual
2:09person. And I'm like, "Well, that's
2:11super cool. I should get to know this
2:12girl." Cuz you know, it's really
2:13important to have, you know, like
2:15fellowship, friendship with other
2:17believers. And if I want to be more
2:18spiritual, it's a good idea for me to,
2:21you know, have friends who are
2:23spiritual. So, I went and introduced
2:24myself to her and I started talking to
2:26her. And the more I talked to her, the
2:28more I realized that something was off.
2:31Cuz when I was talking to her, one of
2:32the things I asked her was I asked her
2:34where she went to church. And she said
2:36that she didn't really do church. And
2:38like, you know, the Bible says, you
2:40know, not to forsake meeting together.
2:42Like, we're supposed to go to church.
2:44That's part of God's plan for us as
2:46Christians is to, you know, connect with
2:48other believers. You know, it's not
2:50church that saves you. It's Jesus who
2:52saves you. But God does say we should go
2:54to church. But I didn't want to be like
2:56judgmental towards this girl. So,
2:58instead I just kind of changed the
2:59subject and was like, "Oh hey, that's a
3:01cool keychain you got on your backpack."
3:03And it was cool. It looked like
3:04something she had made out of like
3:05leather and string and beads. So, I was
3:07like, "Hey, that's a cool keychain." And
3:09she was like, "Oh yeah, it wards off
3:10malignant vibrations." And I was like,
3:13"I I didn't understand what those words
3:15you just used. What What did you It does
3:16what now?" And she was like, "It keeps
3:18away evil spirits and energies." And I
3:21was like, "Oh, oh okay." And I'm
3:24thinking to myself, "That's That's
3:26weird." And at first, since she said she
3:28was spiritual, I thought that I Well, I
3:30thought she was a Christian. But
3:31eventually, after talking to her for a
3:33while, she said she doesn't really do
3:35religion either. She She doesn't do
3:37church. She doesn't She doesn't do
3:38religion at all. Which seemed weird to
3:40me cuz she said she was spiritual. But
3:42then after like the keychain thing, I
3:43thought maybe she was like a part of
3:45some other religion. But she says she's
3:47not a part of any religion. But she is,
3:49in her words, super spiritual. Well,
3:52where I live, like the people that I
3:54interact with the most, if the people I
3:56know aren't Christians, they're usually
3:58like not spiritual at all. They they
4:00don't believe that there's anything
4:01beyond the physical. But, there are
4:04there are lots of people who would
4:06consider themselves spiritual who aren't
4:09Christian. And that's something that I
4:10don't know, I just hadn't realized until
4:12I saw it for myself. Within the church,
4:14when you hear the word spiritual, it's
4:16it's a good thing. It's good to be
4:18spiritual. You want to be spiritual.
4:19But, out in the world, spiritual can
4:21mean a lot of different things. And
4:22outside the church, it's always bad. So,
4:26I'm I'm not going to be mean to River
4:27because she's you know, because she's
4:29not a Christian. But, you better believe
4:31I'm not going to be taking any spiritual
4:33advice from her at all. And I think we
4:35need to be really careful about
4:37spiritual things. Within the Bible,
4:39being spiritual means walking with God,
4:42living according to the spirit, His
4:44spirit, the Holy Spirit, God Himself,
4:47the one true God. But, spiritual can
4:49mean a lot of different things to a lot
4:51of different people. And we need to be
4:53very very careful about spiritual
4:57things. I think even sometimes in the
4:58church, I've spoken to people who, you
5:00know, would call themselves Christians
5:02and would say that they're very
5:03spiritual. But, to them, very spiritual
5:05just means that they are very open to
5:08the spiritual ideas of other religions.
5:11And that's that's not at all what it
5:13means to be spiritual according to the
5:14Bible. You know, I've gotten so used to
5:16like people outside of Christianity
5:18having no faith in anything, that I
5:20forgot that there are lots of people who
5:21have faith in stuff that is wrong. They
5:23believe in spiritual things, but the
5:25spiritual things that they believe are
5:27not what God wants them to believe. The
5:29spiritual things that they do are not
5:31spiritual things that God wants them to
5:33do. And it's not even just like specific
5:36religions, either. Like, there are a lot
5:38of people who would say, you know, like
5:39River, they would say that they aren't a
5:41part of any specific religion, but they
5:43are spiritual. And just being spiritual,
5:46meaning you believe that there are
5:48spiritual things, you believe that there
5:50is something beyond the physical world,
5:52does not at all mean that you're on the
5:53right path. It seems like more and more
5:55people are starting to consider
5:56themselves as like spiritual people. And
5:59at first it might seem like a good
6:01thing, but if you are {quote} {unquote}
6:02spiritual, but you don't believe in
6:05Jesus, that is not good. And if you do
6:08believe in Jesus, but you are like
6:09dabbling in in the spiritual stuff of
6:12other religions, man, that is also
6:14really really not good. And here's the
6:17thing too, if I if I meet a Christian
6:19who says that they are not spiritual,
6:21that's that's like a red flag. That's
6:23not okay. If you're like, "Well, I'm a
6:25Christian, but I really only believe in
6:27what we can see and measure. I don't
6:29really believe in miracles, that sort of
6:31stuff." It's like, "Well, then you're
6:32not a Christian." You know, Jesus is
6:34God. Jesus performed miracles. Jesus
6:37still performs miracles. If you're a
6:39Christian, you should be spiritual. But
6:41there is a right way and a wrong way to
6:43be spiritual. God wants us to follow
6:45him. Like the biblical definition of
6:47spirituality, the biblical definition of
6:49being spiritual is following after God,
6:51following after the Holy Spirit, doing
6:54what he wants us to do. So, my challenge
6:56to you guys today is that you would be
6:58spiritual. It is good to be spiritual.
7:00God wants us to be spiritual. He wants
7:02our minds to be on the things that that
7:05are above. He wants us to focus on him.
7:07He wants us to focus on his ways. He
7:09wants us to walk in the spirit. He wants
7:12us to be not fleshly, not worldly, but
7:15spiritual. I want that for me. I want
7:18that for you. God wants that for us. But
7:21my challenge is that you would also be
7:22very careful about what others call
7:25spiritual. If there is anything that we
7:29need spiritually, God has shown it to us
7:31in scripture. There is no other religion
7:34at all that can share any spiritual
7:37wisdom with us. It does us no good to go
7:40looking for spiritual truth outside of
7:43scripture. And God does not want us to
7:45mess with anything that is spiritual
7:47that is not of him.
7:49Crystals and talismans and and stuff
7:52like that, they they are not going to
7:55protect us spiritually. In fact, they
7:56could really mess us up spiritually.
7:58Looking for signs and and divination
8:01from like tarot cards or or trying to
8:02talk to the dead or like seeking truth
8:05from the constellations, like none of
8:07that is good. God doesn't want us
8:09messing with that. If you want
8:11protection from evil spirits, trying to
8:13make some magical protective word is
8:15like the exact opposite of what you want
8:17to do. If you want protection from evil
8:19spirits, believe in Jesus Christ and ask
8:22him for help. We don't need that stuff.
8:25We have Jesus. And messing with
8:26spiritual stuff that is not of God is a
8:29great way to get, well, spiritually
8:31messed up. So yes, absolutely, be a
8:34spiritual person. That is a very good
8:37thing. God wants you to be spiritual.
8:39But be spiritual according to his
8:41definition of spiritual. Be spiritual
8:43according to his will. But anything at
8:45all that is spiritual but not of God is
8:48not good. Not to be messed with. So be
8:51spiritual, but be very careful about
8:53what you mean by that.

8:58And yeah, have you ever like interacted
9:00with somebody who is very spiritual but
9:03not Christian? I feel like there are
9:05more and more people like that these
9:07days. People who who would consider
9:09themselves spiritual but are are very
9:10far from God. I also interact with a lot
9:12of people in the church who would call
9:14themselves spiritual and I I kind of I
9:16don't know, these days I'm kind of wary
9:17about that. I'm like, "What what exactly
9:19do you mean by spiritual?" Cuz you know,
9:22in some ways like in the biblical sense,
9:24to be spiritual is
9:25is very good. It is absolutely what we
9:27should do. We should be spiritual. But
9:30spirituality apart from God is bad news.
9:34And I I I know that I would say that
9:36it's better to be spiritual than
9:37unspiritual just as like a blanket
9:39statement. I do think that people who
9:41are spiritual might be farther along the
9:43right track than people who are
9:44unspiritual, but anything that is not of
9:46God is not good. If you're spiritual,
9:49but you don't believe in Jesus, you are
9:50just as bad off as someone who doesn't
9:53believe in Jesus or any sort of
9:55spiritual thing at all. So, yeah, being
9:57spiritual as a Christian
9:59is a goal. We should be spiritual, but
10:01we need to be careful about what we mean
10:03by that.
