0:11what helps you to be successful in life
0:15your natural ability how good you are at
0:17doing things is obviously one factor but
0:21your attitude how you approach your work
0:24and the people around you is another
0:26probably more important factor people in
0:30invest a lot of time and money into
0:32improving their abilities or
0:34skills but strangely they don't always
0:37spend the same amount of time working on
0:39their attitude and their emotional
0:43intelligence emotional intelligence
0:45helps you to build relationships in your
0:48work and personal life and just like
0:51skills it's something that can be
0:53improved with training so how can we
0:56improve our emotional intelligence the
0:59first thing is to start noticing your
1:01emotions at different times in the
1:05day how did you feel this morning maybe
1:08you felt stressed when you woke
1:11up and then you felt a bit confused when
1:14a colleague complimented you on your
1:18work try to notice if there are patterns
1:21to your feelings have you felt like this
1:24before then think about how these
1:26emotions affected you through the day
1:30[Music]
1:31the second thing is to try to manage
1:34these
1:35emotions try to be objective about your
1:37feelings and to see the positives as
1:40well as the
1:42negatives you felt stressed because you
1:45woke up late and you knew you had loads
1:47to do but maybe you needed the extra
1:50sleep you felt confused because you
1:53didn't know if your colleague was really
1:55saying that your work is good or that
1:57you don't usually do good work but most
2:00likely he was complimenting
2:03you sometimes it's difficult to see a
2:05positive you're depressed because you
2:07didn't get that job you really wanted
2:10but you shouldn't be overwhelmed by
2:11negative
2:13thoughts instead just allow them to pass
2:16over you then think about what you're
2:18going to do to work through the
2:22situation what about handling other
2:24people's
2:25emotions showing empathy is a key part
2:28of emotional intellig
2:30too in fact it's probably the most
2:33important factor in how others see
2:36you one key to this is to be an active
2:40listener that means acknowledging other
2:42people's feelings and asking the right
2:47questions imagine that a colleague who
2:49you like and value tells you that he's
2:52really frustrated with his job in fact
2:55he says he's ready to resign you ask him
2:58why do you feel that way way how did the
3:01situation get so bad your colleague
3:04explains that his boss never listens to
3:06his suggestions you ask how would
3:09resigning make you feel yeah probably
3:12even more frustrated he admits so
3:16without needing to give an opinion
3:17yourself you have shown empathy and
3:20helped your colleague understand his own
3:22emotional
3:23reactions the second key to
3:26understanding others feelings is to
3:28learn to read facial expressions and
3:30Body
3:31Language sometimes these are very clear
3:34in a look of disgust the eyebrows may go
3:37down and the nose and lips come up true
3:40happiness or joy is indicated by a
3:43smiling mouth and smiling eyes but most
3:46of the time expressions are more subtle
3:49what we call Micro
3:51Expressions these are smaller
3:53Expressions that appear only for a
3:55second and then are gone a slight
3:58wrinkling of the nose or momentary smile
4:01and narrowing of the eyes can you tell
4:04what emotion is being expressed
4:08here or
4:13here the first was Sadness the second
4:16was anger as you develop emotional
4:20intelligence and become more aware of
4:22expressions and micro Expressions you'll
4:25be better able to react appropriately at
4:27work school or almost anywhere at the
4:31same time you'll learn more about your
4:33own expressions and learn to notice your
4:36own emotions
4:38[Music]
