0:00Well, hello and welcome to this English

0:02lesson about everyday English phrases.

0:04These are phrases that I use every

0:06day as a native English speaker.

0:08And the first two phrases I want

0:10to teach you are, phrases we would use

0:12when talking about the grocery store.

0:14I would probably say to someone,

0:16I need to get groceries

0:18or I need to pick up a few things.

0:20The second one is actually quite common.

0:22If I was at work and someone said,

0:24what are you doing after work?

0:25I could say, oh, I need to go to

0:27the grocery store because I need

0:29to get groceries, or I'm going

0:31to go to the grocery store

0:33because I need to pick up a few

0:34things.

0:35So those are two common everyday

0:37English phrases that I use...

0:39well, at least on the days when

0:40I go to the grocery store.

0:42Before we continue with the lesson,

0:43though, I do want to thank

0:44Preply, the sponsor of this video.

0:46If you're looking for someone

0:47to help you take your English learning

0:49to the next level, in my opinion,

0:51Preply is a great place to find someone

0:53to help you do just that.

0:54And if you use the link

0:56in the description below today, you'll

0:57get 50% off your first lesson.

1:00So behind me is a coffee shop,

1:02and there are a couple

1:03of phrases that you would use when

1:05talking about a coffee shop.

1:06And you would mostly use these

1:08two phrases in the morning.

1:10People do usually go to a coffee

1:12shop on their way to work or

1:13on their way to school.

1:14So these two phrases work

1:15best in the morning.

1:17You might say to someone,

1:18I'm going to grab a coffee.

1:20In English, for some reason, we use

1:22the verb grab for a variety of things,

1:24but that is the correct way to say it.

1:25I'm going to grab a coffee

1:27at the coffee shop.

1:28Or because it's morning and maybe

1:30you didn't eat at home, you might

1:31say, I'm going to get breakfast.

1:34And there's a couple other

1:35phrases I'm going to teach you.

1:36You could say, I'm going to go

1:38through the drive through,

1:39so you're going to use your car

1:41to go through the drive through.

1:42Or you might just say to someone, I'm

1:44going to go in, which means you're

1:46going to get out of your car and go in.

1:48So a few phrases to use

1:50at the coffee shop.

1:51I'm going to grab a coffee.

1:52I'm going to get breakfast.

1:54I'm going to go through the drive

1:56through, or I'm going to go in.

1:58So behind me we have a gas station.

2:01When you go to the gas station, there's

2:02a few phrases that you would use to

2:05talk about that. You would say I'm going

2:07to the gas station to fill up my car.

2:09I'm going to the gas station to get gas.

2:12By the way, when you say you're going

2:13to fill up your car, it's just

2:16understood that you're getting

2:17gasoline, that you're getting gas.

2:19You might go to the gas station

2:21to pump up your tires.

2:22So we have a little, air pump here.

2:25You might go to the gas station

2:26to pump up your tires.

2:28And some people, when they're

2:29at the gas station, they

2:30decide to check their oil.

2:32So they open the hood of their

2:33car and they pull out the dipstick,

2:35and they check to make

2:36sure it has enough oil in it.

2:38So when you go to the gas station,

2:39you might go to get gas,

2:41you might go to fill up, you might go

2:43to check your oil,

2:44or you might go to pump up your tires.

2:47Now, there are a couple of phrases

2:49you would use when talking

2:50about a bank, and there's a couple

2:52variations of each phrase.

2:54You might go to a bank to withdraw money

2:57or to make a withdrawal.

2:59We use both phrases pretty

3:00much interchangeably.

3:02You might also go to the bank to

3:04deposit money or to make a deposit.

3:07Sorry, I was trying to make sure

3:08I said them in the same order.

3:10So two phrases, actually four

3:11phrases that you can use

3:13when talking about the bank.

3:14You might go to the bank to deposit

3:16money or to make a deposit.

3:18You might go to the bank to withdraw

3:21money or to make a withdrawal.

3:23So behind me, there's a post office.

3:25And there are a couple

3:26of phrases that you would use when

3:28talking about a post office.

3:30You might go to the post

3:31office to send a letter.

3:33You might have written a letter to

3:35someone and you go to the post office

3:37to send that letter to someone.

3:39Or you might go to the post office to

3:41get your mail or to pick up your mail.

3:44I have a post office box

3:46in the post office, so sometimes I go

3:48to the post office to get my

3:50mail or to pick up my mail.

3:52So two phrases you can use

3:54at the post office.

3:55You can go there to send a letter.

3:56Wait, is that actually three phrases?

3:58Yes, that's three phrases.

4:00You can go there to send a letter, you

4:02can go there to get your mail, or

4:03you can go there to pick up your mail.

4:05Now, of course, you can only get your

4:07mail or pick up your mail if you have

4:09a post office box in the post office.

4:11Some people get their mail

4:13delivered straight to their house.

4:14That's much handier.

4:16Before we continue with the English

4:17lesson, I do want to once again, thank

4:19Preply the sponsor of this video.

4:21If you're looking for a way to

4:23practice everyday English phrases

4:25like the ones you're learning today,

4:26in this lesson, Preply is a great

4:28place to find a tutor to help you do

4:30just that.

4:31In fact, that is a great way to help

4:33you remember new words and phrases.

4:36If you watch a YouTube video and

4:38you learn some new words and

4:39phrases, you can send a list of

4:41those words and phrases to your

4:42Preply partner and they can help

4:44you practice them in your next

4:46conversation.

4:47And if you don't know what Preply is,

4:48Preply is a place where you can find

4:50an English tutor who will help you with

4:52your specific English learning needs.

4:54If you're learning English because

4:56you're going to go study in an English

4:58speaking country, maybe you're

4:59going to travel to an English speaking

5:01country, maybe you need to improve your

5:03English because you work in the world

5:05of business.

5:05Whatever your reason, Preply

5:07has a tutor who can tailor lessons

5:09to your specific needs.

5:11So if you use the link

5:13in the description below today

5:14you can get 50% off your

5:16first lesson at Preply.

5:17And I'm sure you'll find a tutor there

5:19to help you with what you need.

5:22So I'm standing in a parking lot, and

5:24one of the things you will most

5:26likely do if you're visiting any of

5:28the places I'm talking about today

5:30is you're going to find a parking

5:32spot and then you are going to park

5:34your car.

5:35So those are two phrases you would

5:37use when talking about a parking lot.

5:39When you arrive at a place like this,

5:41when you're going to the pharmacy or

5:43you're going to the coffee shop, the

5:45very first thing you will most

5:46likely need to do if you're driving

5:48a car is you need to find a parking

5:50spot and then you need to park your

5:52car.

5:53Then you can go and do all

5:54of your errands and visit

5:55the places you need to go to.

5:57And then when you come back,

5:58your car will be safely

5:59in the parking spot where you put it.

6:01So two phrases for a parking lot.

6:03You need to find a parking spot

6:05and then you need to park your car.

6:07So the next phrase I want to teach

6:09you is a phrase you'll use when talking

6:10about a drugstore or pharmacy.

6:13If you go to the doctor, and if you're

6:15sick and the doctor decides you need

6:17medicine, you will get a prescription.

6:20A prescription is permission

6:22for the pharmacy or drugstore

6:24to give you that medicine.

6:26And so the phrase you'll use

6:28is that you go to the drugstore

6:29to pick up a Prescription.

6:31The drugstore gets the information

6:33from the doctor.

6:34They put the medicine in a bottle,

6:36and you go to the drugstore

6:37to pick up a prescription.

6:39So if you're talking about

6:40a drugstore, you might say to someone,

6:42I have to go to the pharmacy,

6:44or I have to go to the drugstore

6:45to pick up a prescription.

6:48Another type of place you might go

6:49to once a week or even every day is

6:52a place called a convenience store, or

6:54we sometimes call it a variety store.

6:57This is a place where you go to buy

6:59something because you're in a hurry.

7:01And the phrase we often use is

7:03to grab something quick.

7:04I'm going to go to the convenience

7:06store and grab something quick

7:08because I'm in a hurry and I want

7:09to buy something very, very quickly.

7:11I don't want to go to a big grocery

7:13store and walk all over the place.

7:14I just want a bottle

7:15of pop and a chocolate bar.

7:17I'm going to go to the convenience

7:19store and grab something quick.

7:21So that's the phrase I would use when

7:23talking about a convenience store.

7:24I'm going to go to the convenience

7:25store and grab something

7:26quick because I'm in a hurry.

7:29So there are two phrases that you might

7:30use when you're talking about a park.

7:33The first phrase you might use is

7:35actually two phrases together.

7:36You might say, I'm going to go

7:38to the park to sit and relax.

7:40So you might go to the park to sit

7:42on a park bench and to relax.

7:44Maybe at lunch, you leave work

7:46and you go to the park to sit

7:48and relax during your lunch break.

7:50And then the second phrase that I

7:51can think of is to walk your dog.

7:53If you are someone that owns

7:55a dog, you might come

7:56to the park to walk your dog.

7:58It's a big, open green space.

8:00As long as your dog's on a leash,

8:02you're allowed usually

8:03to walk your dog at a park.

8:05So two phrases you can use

8:07when talking about a park.

8:08You might come here to sit and relax, or

8:10you might come here to walk your dog.

8:13Maybe you're someone

8:14who likes to work out.

8:15Maybe you like to stay in shape.

8:18You like to be fit.

8:19And in that case, you

8:21would go to the gym.

8:22And there's a few phrases we use

8:24when talking about the gym.

8:26You might say, I'm going to go work out.

8:28That means you're going to go

8:29to the gym and do a whole bunch

8:31of different exercises.

8:32If you are really into

8:34building muscle, you might say,

8:36I'm going to go lift weights.

8:38I'm going to go to the gym,

8:39I'm going to work out.

8:40I'm going to go lift weights.

8:42And maybe you go to the gym

8:44to take a class.

8:45Maybe you're taking

8:46a fitness class at the gym.

8:48So three different phrases.

8:50I think there's actually a fourth one

8:51in there somewhere.

8:52You might go to the gym to work out, you

8:54might go to the gym to take a class.

8:56You might go to the gym to lift weights.

9:00So behind me is our local library.

9:02And there are three phrases you can use

9:05when talking about the library.

9:07By the way, the library is the place

9:08where there's lots of books.

9:10And you can go to the library

9:11to check out a book or to borrow

9:13a book or to return a book.

9:16So when you check out a book or borrow

9:18a book, it means the library, lends

9:21you the book, it lets you have the

9:22book for a little while, and then

9:24when you're done, you need to return

9:25the book.

9:26So, three phrases you can use

9:27to talk about the library.

9:29You can go to the library to check

9:30out a book, to borrow a book, or

9:32maybe you're done reading the book

9:34and you need to return the book.

9:37Well, thank you so much for watching
