The Water Cost of AI
0:00why does AI need drinkable water to run
0:02every single message that you send to an AI
0:05model uses drinkable water
0:06but how does it happen
0:07that a message that I sent to an AI
0:09bot uses drinkable water
0:11and for an estimate about 20 messages to CGPT3
0:14uses half a litre of drinkable water
0:17which is a whole water bottle
0:18and so why does this whole process happen
0:21and why exactly drinkable water
0:23now the first thing we need to understand is
Why AI Generates Heat
0:25what happens when you send the message to an AI model
0:28because all that AI is
0:29is a lot of calculations done by a computer
0:32and these computers
0:33are located inside of these large data centers
0:36and so when you send the message to an AI
0:39it sends it to these computers to do the calculation
0:42and when you send your message to these computers
0:44they need to start processing the message
0:46and this processing by the chips that are used
0:49uses so much computing power
0:50that it generates a lot of heat
0:52and exactly as you have a computer at home
0:54that uses small cooling fans
0:56because the computer
0:57still is doing some kind of calculations
0:59it's just on a much smaller scale
1:01these computers that are in the big data
1:03data centers need to be somehow cooled down as well
1:06but because they are so large
1:08they need to use a completely different scale
1:10of cooling themselves down
The Two-Loop Cooling System
1:11and just as nuclear power plants
1:13they have these large cooling towers
1:15and they use water
1:16because water is an amazing heat absorbent
1:18but then why use drinkable water
1:20if you have so much water
1:21for example in the ocean
1:22well exactly as the nuclear plants
1:24they use something as the primary and secondary
1:27cooling system
1:28where
1:28the primary cooling system is what comes into contact
1:31with the computers
1:31which is usually some kind of a more advanced liquid
1:34for example propylene glycol mixtures
1:36which is what cools down the computers
1:38but when it gets heated
1:39and it's going from the computers
1:41we need to cool it down
1:42and that's where the secondary cooling
1:43loop comes into play
1:45and the secondary is where the drinkable
1:46water gets used
1:47these two liquids meet with metal pipes
1:50because metal is an amazing heat transfer
1:52and so the first heated liquid comes
1:54and it meets with the cooled water
1:57that then gets heated but it cools down this liquid
1:59that then goes again to the computers
2:01but then we have this heated water
2:03that we need to send to the cooling towers
2:06which of course creates steam
Why Not Use Ocean Water?
2:07that is then sent from this cooling tower
2:09and so
2:09using non drinkable water would cause many problems
2:12first of all
2:13because it would contain a lot more minerals
2:15and when this water would turn into the steam
2:17it would leave these minerals behind
2:19which would cause something called scaling
2:21which we can see all around us
2:22even on a sink
2:23which would then block
2:24and completely destroy the whole cooling process
2:27and the second reason is corrosion
2:28because these metal pipes
2:29if they were met with something that is non drinkable
2:32it would cause corrosion on these metal pipes
2:34which would make them completely unusable
2:36and that's not all because these cooling towers
The Bacteria & Fungi Problem
2:39they are wet and they are warm
2:41that's a perfect environment for fungi to exist
2:44if you send their water
2:45that hasn't been processed and cleaned
2:46it would be a perfect environment for bacteria to exist
2:50and that would again
2:51completely destroy the cooling process
2:53and so
2:53this is a large problem that still hasn't been solved
2:56I'm not the smartest person of all
2:57but I just tried sharing what I found out
2:59because I believe that this is something
3:01that more people should know about
3:02and so the real question is
3:03was it worth it to ask GPT
3:05why is sky blue at the cost of drinkable water
