0:02Every mile, a little more, and nothing
0:04on your dash says a word about it. You
0:07feel it as a car that does not pull like
0:09it did. A shake on a cold morning that
0:11smooths out by the stop sign. A tank
0:14that does not go as far. You're not
0:17imagining it, friend. It is not in your
0:19head, and it is not the gas. And the
0:21clock behind that service counter runs
0:2390 to $140 an hour at an independent
0:27shop, 140 to 200 at a dealership. Here
0:31is what is doing it. Oil mist and
0:34exhaust soot routed back into your
0:36intake on purpose, baking onto metal a
0:39little harder every heat cycle. Nobody
0:42is hiding that. What gets hidden is the
0:45price. Good news, it is still your
0:48engine, and most of what it costs to get
0:50it back is pocket change and an
0:52afternoon. You do not need a lift. You
0:55do not need a scan tool that costs more
0:57than the car, and you do not need to
0:59give up a Saturday. I am Sal Whitaker,
1:0212 years inside a dealership service
1:05department, 30 years running my own
1:07shop. What I have for you is 10 moves
1:10against carbon. Most of them under $20.
1:13Three of them free, and three of them
1:15are sentences you say at the counter
1:17instead of paying. And do not skip
1:19number 10. That is the one they charge
1:22the most to scare you about, and it is
1:24the cheapest thing on the list. All
1:26right, come on over here. Number one,
1:29your engine air filter. Pleated paper in
1:32a plastic box, and every bit of air your
1:34motor breathes goes through it first.
1:36Pop the clips, lift the lid, there it
1:39is. Clean, those pleats are white. Ready
1:42to change, they are gray brown with
1:45seeds and leaves down in the housing.
1:47Pleated paper, not a family heirloom.
1:50Here is where the money is, and it is
1:52not the filter.
1:54A basic paper filter is 10 to $25 on the
1:57shelf. Premium or high flow, another $10
2:01to $60 on top. The published average
2:03from RepairPal for a shop to do that
2:05same swap is $75 to $96.
2:09Every fix on this list gets measured the
2:11same way. What it really costs against
2:14what they would quote you for it. The
2:15two numbers say it themselves. Whole
2:18job, engine off. Find the black plastic
2:21box the big intake tube runs into. Undo
2:24the clips, usually four, sometimes a
2:27couple of Phillips screws. Lift the lid.
2:30Note which way the old filter sits. If
2:32there is an arrow on the frame, it
2:34points the way the air flows. Pull it
2:36out. Wipe the grit out of the housing
2:38with a damp rag. Drop the new one in
2:41flat, seated in its lip. Close the lid
2:43and press until every clip snaps home.
2:47Now, here is the part nobody tells you.
2:49Not every car is four clips. Some need
2:52the intake tube off or half a dozen
2:54screws. I am not going to stand here and
2:56tell you they are all 2 minutes because
2:59that is how a mechanic gets caught. Open
3:01your own box and look before you pay
3:03labor for it. And if that lid does not
3:06seat all the way, unfiltered air goes
3:08straight past everything downstream. 5
3:11minutes, $15.
3:13A fellow brought me a Corolla with a
3:15ticket for $91 to change one. He had
3:18paid it before he showed me. Driveway
3:20job. Put your wallet away. Number two
3:23cost you nothing at all and it decides
3:25which half of this video is even about
3:27your car.
3:29Number two, your fuel injector and where
3:31it is pointed. On an older port injected
3:34engine, that injector sprays into the
3:36intake port right at the back of the
3:38intake valve.
3:40On a direct injection engine, somebody
3:41moved it into the cylinder itself.
3:44Same word, injector.
3:46Two different worlds for everything else
3:48on this list.
3:49Gasoline is a solvent carrying a
3:51detergent package. On a port engine, it
3:54washes the back of that valve every
3:56single cycle. On a direct engine,
3:59nothing washes it, ever. And oil mist
4:02and soot still go past it. Owners start
4:04noticing it well past 50,000 mi, often
4:07past 80.
4:09A cold start shudder that runs 30
4:11seconds to a couple of minutes and then
4:12clears, and a pull that faded so slow
4:15you only see it in hindsight. So, find
4:18out which one you have tonight for free.
4:21One. Walk out and look at the engine
4:24cover and the badge on the back. GDI,
4:27TSI, TFSI, FSI, EcoBoost, SkyActiv-G,
4:33City. Those are all marketing names for
4:36the same thing, direct injection. Two.
4:39No badge? Go to the manual that came
4:42with the car, engine description. Three.
4:45Still nothing? Search your exact year,
4:47model, and engine size with the words
4:50direct injection. Four. Write the answer
4:53on the inside cover of that manual. And
4:55D4S means you have both. Direct
4:59injection is not a defect and nobody
5:01built it to fail. It was traded for real
5:03efficiency and emissions gains, and
5:06several manufacturers have since added a
5:08second injector back in the port so it
5:10washes those valves again.
5:12Engineers do not spend money fixing
5:14something they wanted broken. And if you
5:17are port injected, a good half of the
5:19scary stuff on the internet was never
5:21about your car.
5:2230 seconds, $0. And if the counter
5:25cannot tell you which one your engine
5:27is, whatever they recommended right
5:29after was not built on the answer.
5:32Driveway job. It is a flashlight and a
5:35badge. Number three is the bottle they
5:37hand you at the register, and whether it
5:40works depends on what you just found
5:42out. Number three, the bottle. Fuel
5:45system cleaner, injector cleaner, engine
5:48restore. The one that rides on top of
5:51the estimate at the register. Pour it in
5:53the tank, it mixes with the gas, and it
5:55goes wherever the gasoline goes.
5:58That last clause is the entire verdict,
6:01and almost nobody says it out loud.
6:03On a direct injection engine, the
6:05gasoline never touches the back of the
6:07intake valve, so the additive cannot
6:10either. Mechanically, it cannot get
6:12there. And the company that makes the
6:14aerosol version publishes that its own
6:17spray puts detergent 150 times more
6:20concentrated on those valves than any
6:22premium fuel additive.
6:24That is the chemical company arguing
6:26against the bottle.
6:28It is a bottle. It is not a rescue
6:30helicopter.
6:31So, here is how you decide, standing at
6:33the shelf, in 10 seconds. One, pull up
6:37your answer from number two. Two, port
6:40injected, then it is genuinely half
6:42true. The detergent reaches your valves,
6:45and a decent bottle at a normal fill-up
6:47is money reasonably spent. Three, direct
6:51injected, then it cleans your injectors,
6:53which is real work, and does nothing for
6:56the deposits in this video.
6:58Four, either way, if somebody hands it
7:01to you as the fix for a rough idle, put
7:03it back on the shelf.
7:05I am not telling you the bottle is a
7:06scam. Fuel detergent is real chemistry
7:09doing real work in the fuel system.
7:12What I'm telling you is that it gets
7:13sold as the answer to a problem it
7:15cannot physically reach. Usually stacked
7:18on a ticket next to three other lines.
7:2112 years inside, I watched that bottle
7:23go on the counter as the closer.
7:26Every time. 10 seconds and about 10
7:28bucks, spent right or not spent at all.
7:32That is not a your car problem. That is
7:34a their counter problem. Buy it if you
7:37are port injected, skip it if you are
7:39direct and somebody is calling it a
7:41cure.
7:42Still holding number 10,
7:44it is the cheap one.
7:45Number four is free, and it is the only
7:48thing on this list that works while you
7:50drive.
7:51Number four, not a part, a habit, the
7:54full warm-up.
7:56Your engine has an operating temperature
7:58it was designed to live at, and short
8:00trips never let it get there.
8:02Five minutes to the store, five minutes
8:04back, shut it off.
8:06That needle barely lifts off cold. That
8:08car has never once in its life been
8:10properly hot.
8:12Light, fresh, oily deposits burn back
8:15off when the intake path gets hot enough
8:17for long enough.
8:18They do not when it does not.
8:21That is why the published guidance on
8:23decarbonizing services says a car that
8:26reaches full operating temperature at
8:28least once a week generally does not
8:30need one.
8:32Your errand car is building deposits the
8:34commuter next door is burning back off.
8:37Once a week, do this.
8:40One, pick a trip you were making anyway.
8:43Two, take the road, not the shortcut.
8:4720-25 minutes of steady driving, highway
8:50if you have it.
8:51Three,
8:52let that temperature needle come up to
8:54the middle and stay there a good while.
8:57That is the part that matters. The first
9:00two minutes do nothing.
9:02Four, vary the load, pull up a hill,
9:05roll on and off the throttle at legal
9:07speeds.
9:09Five, drive it home.
9:11It cost you the gas you were already
9:13burning.
9:14Now, the old shop myth attached to this
9:17one is the Italian tune-up.
9:19Go flog it and blow the carbon out. Heat
9:22and load take off the light stuff, and
9:24that part is true.
9:26They do not remove hardened layered
9:28crust from the back of a valve.
9:30As prevention, free and genuinely
9:33useful. As a cure, no.
9:36I have been wrong
9:38Once was about a Buick. 20 minutes a
9:41week, $0.
9:43Nothing to buy, nothing to break, and it
9:46is the only maintenance on this whole
9:47list you perform with your right foot.
9:50Driveway job, and you are already behind
9:53the wheel.
9:54Number five is a $2 part that causes
9:57half the mess we have been talking
9:58about.
10:00Number five, the positive crankcase
10:02ventilation valve.
10:04A little barrel about the size of the
10:06first joint of your thumb, pushed into a
10:08grommet in the valve cover with a hose
10:10to the intake.
10:12Combustion pressure sneaks past every
10:14piston ring in every engine.
10:16That is blow-by, and it is normal.
10:19The valve pulls those vapors out and
10:21feeds them back in to be burned. It is
10:24the single biggest source of the oil
10:26half of everything caking up in your
10:28intake. Stuck shut, it pressurizes the
10:31crankcase and pushes oil past your
10:33seals.
10:34That is the mystery leak at three
10:36gaskets at once, and a torn diaphragm
10:39gives you a whistle at idle.
10:41The service guide from Kelley Blue Book
10:43puts the part itself at $2 to $15.
10:46On a discrete valve engine, here is the
10:49job. One, engine cold, off, key out.
10:54Two, find it in the valve cover with a
10:56hose on it. A parts store lookup shows
10:59you where.
11:00Three, slide the clamp back and twist
11:03the hose off gently.
11:05Do not yank a brittle line. Four, pull
11:08the valve out of the grommet.
11:10Five, shake it. No rattle, it is done.
11:14Six, new one in, correct part number,
11:17oriented the way the old one came out.
11:20Seven, hose back on, clamp seated.
11:24Two hard limits. First, plenty of modern
11:27engines do not have a discrete valve.
11:30The function is molded into the plastic
11:32valve cover, and the real repair there
11:34is a cover assembly and a torque
11:36sequence. That is shop work, not
11:38driveway work. Second, this is federally
11:41mandated emissions equipment. Replacing
11:44a failed one is maintenance. Removing or
11:47capping it is tampering, and I will not
11:49show you how.
11:5110 minutes, a couple of dollars up to
11:5215. The published average from Repair
11:55Pal to have it done is 118 to 166.
12:00A second published estimate says 186 to
12:03220. Both are out there, and I am not
12:06picking.
12:07Guy brought me an Outback leaking
12:09everywhere. Stuck valve. Driveway job on
12:12the simple ones.
12:13Number six is the sensor they replace
12:16when a can would have told them.
12:18Number six. The mass airflow sensor.
12:21Small plastic housing clamped into the
12:23intake tube between your airbox and the
12:25engine. Two little screws. Inside is a
12:29wire thinner than a hair, heated on
12:31purpose.
12:32Air blowing past cools it. The computer
12:35watches the current it takes to hold
12:36that temperature, and that is how your
12:39car knows how much fuel to send. It does
12:41not cake. It films over. A gray-brown
12:45haze of oil mist and fine dust, and an
12:48over-oiled reusable air filter upstream
12:50will do it all by itself.
12:52A filmed sensor reads low, so the
12:55computer underfuels. You get a stumble
12:58off a stop, a long crank, sometimes a
13:00surge at cruise. The published average
13:03from Repair Pal to replace one is 273 to
13:07382 dollars. Same measuring stick. 10
13:11minutes. One.
13:13Engine off, key out, let it cool.
13:16Two. Unplug the connector, press the
13:19lock tab, do not pry the wires. Three.
13:23Two screws, lift the sensor out. Four.
13:26Cleaner labeled for mass airflow
13:28sensors, nothing else. And per the guide
13:31from the maker, 10 to 15 bursts over the
13:34whole element. Five, do not touch it.
13:38Not the straw, not a swab, not a
13:40fingertip. That wire breaks with almost
13:43no force.
13:44Six, let it air dry completely. Seven,
13:48back in, screws snug, connector clicked
13:51home.
13:52Here is the honest limit, and it argues
13:55use against me.
13:56A contaminated sensor cleans up, one
13:59that has drifted electrically does not,
14:01and there is no way to tell by looking.
14:03So, cleaning first is cheap and
14:05reversible. That is the argument, not a
14:08guarantee. And never carb cleaner, never
14:11brake cleaner. They will leave residue
14:14or take the element with them. I have
14:16had this exact part on my bench this
14:18week. 10 minutes, $10, and the can does
14:21it four more times. Had a lady in with
14:24an Altima quoted for a sensor, and the
14:27published range on that car alone runs
14:29330 to 456.
14:31Cleaned it, drove fine. Driveway job.
14:34Number 10 is coming. It is the one in
14:37the picture. Number seven is the can
14:39they sell for the valves themselves.
14:41Number seven, the aerosol intake valve
14:44cleaner, the can on the shelf right next
14:46to the bottle from number three.
14:48It is built around a high concentration
14:50detergent called PEA, sprayed into the
14:53intake air of a running engine so it
14:55reaches the back of the valve, the one
14:57place fuel cannot reach on a direct
14:59injection motor. Now the fight, both
15:02sides. The company that makes it
15:04publishes that it removes up to 46% of
15:07carbon deposits in the first 60 minutes,
15:09and says use it every 10,000 miles. That
15:12is the company that makes the can.
15:15On the other side, a professional
15:17technician thread titled CRC GDI valve
15:20cleaner trial, before and after, never
15:23again.
15:24Borescope pictures at both ends. The
15:27conclusion is in the title. I am not
15:29giving you a homemade procedure for
15:31spraying flammable solvent into a
15:33running engine.
15:34Be suspicious of anybody who does.
15:37Here is the honest handling. One, decide
15:40what you are buying it for, prevention,
15:42not rescue. Two, if your valves are
15:45already crusted at 90,000 mi, this is
15:48not your fix and no amount of it becomes
15:51your fix. Three, if you use one, follow
15:54the printed procedure on the can
15:56exactly. Hands clear of the belt and the
15:58fan. Four, if any of that makes you
16:01uneasy, skip it. This is the one item on
16:04the countdown I will call borderline and
16:07I would rather say so than pretend.
16:10You are putting a flammable aerosol into
16:12a running motor with hot exhaust
16:14underneath.
16:15That is a different risk than wiping
16:17something cold on a Sunday.
16:19And the way those two published
16:20positions reconcile is mechanical, not
16:23statistical.
16:24Chemistry softens fresh oily film. It
16:27does not dissolve a hard layered crust.
16:30The can is not a mind reader. Call it
16:33$15 and half an hour done exactly to the
16:35label. Reasonable as prevention on an
16:38engine that is not crusted yet, not
16:40worth a dime as a rescue and never worth
16:43blast job money, which is where number
16:45eight lives.
16:47Because that is the line they will put
16:48on your estimate. Two left. Real quick,
16:52if this is saving you money, hit
16:54subscribe so the next quote does not
16:56catch you off guard.
16:58All right, back to it. Number eight, the
17:01piece of paper. And the line on it that
17:03says exhaust gas recirculation.
17:06That is a fist-sized valve that lets a
17:09measured amount of already burned
17:11exhaust back into your intake to cool
17:13combustion down.
17:15Emissions equipment. And the second
17:17thing on this list I am sending you away
17:19from instead of toward.
17:22Published ranges put replacement at $300
17:24to $900 all in.
17:27$300 to $450 on a compact, $450 to $650
17:31on a mid-size, $650 to $900 and up on a
17:34turbo.
17:35Cleaning it averages around 70, but the
17:38published spread runs from about 25 to
17:41about 500, depending on whether the
17:43manifold comes off.
17:45That spread is where padding hides. So,
17:48this fix is a script, not a wrench. You
17:50say these in this order.
17:53One,
17:54is the diagnostic fee credited toward
17:56the repair if I authorize the work
17:58today?
17:59Two,
18:00put recommended and required on separate
18:03lines.
18:04Three,
18:05which of these does the maintenance
18:06schedule for my car actually call for at
18:09my mileage?
18:11Four, did you test flow or are we going
18:14off the code?
18:15Five, is the manifold coming off and is
18:18the gasket in the quote? Six, what is
18:21the shop supplies charge and is it
18:23capped? Seven, written estimate before
18:27anything starts and a call before it
18:29goes over.
18:31Two things and one of them cost me.
18:34Diagnostic fees run about 89 to 169 and
18:37they are fair.
18:39That is skilled labor with real tool
18:41money behind it and walking out on a
18:43diagnosis you paid for is not a win.
18:46What published guidance flags is a shop
18:49supplies charge over 10% of labor or one
18:52with no cap.
18:54Some states cap the overage, Illinois at
18:5610%. Check yours.
18:59I wrote these tickets from the other

19:0430 seconds of talking beats a $100 line
19:07item and that is the best hourly rate
19:09you will ever earn.
19:11The valve itself,
19:12seized fasteners, one-time gaskets,
19:15buried passages, emissions law. That is
19:18shop work, not driveway work, and
19:20deleting it is not a repair. It is a
19:23violation.
19:25Number nine is the four-figure one.
19:27Number nine, the intake valves
19:29themselves on a direct-injection engine,
19:33and the job that actually cleans them,
19:35walnut blasting. Crushed walnut shell
19:38blasted at the back of each valve
19:40through the open port with a shop vacuum
19:42sealed to it.
19:43That is the photograph you have seen.
19:46Burnt cauliflower, black, layered, dry,
19:50hard as a briquette.
19:51Here is the number that matters, and it
19:53is not shop against driveway. It is shop
19:56against shop, same shell, same engine.
20:00Independent specialists publish roughly
20:02450 to 750 on a four-cylinder, manifold
20:07off and on, gaskets included. European
20:10and performance shops commonly 500 to
20:13800. Dealership quotes get reported at a
20:15thousand and up past 1,500.
20:19Put your wallet away and make some phone
20:21calls. Your job here is the quote, not
20:23the wrench. One,
20:26show me the borescope picture of my
20:27intake valves. Nothing gets scheduled
20:30without that picture.
20:32Two, get the line item separated.
20:35Inspection, manifold off and on,
20:38blasting labor, gasket set,
20:40verification.
20:42Three,
20:43a quote with no inspection line and no
20:45gasket line gets questions before a
20:47signature.
20:49Four,
20:50ask whether anything else is being done
20:52at the same time, bundled or extra.
20:55Five, call two more shops with those
20:58same line items. Get it in writing, and
21:01do not talk yourself into this one at
21:03home. Yes, the equipment rents at 50 to
21:06150 a day and buys at 150 to 400, and
21:10that number is a trap. It leaves out a
21:12compressor with real sustained volume,
21:15the manifold coming off, one-time
21:17gaskets, and rotating the engine so the
21:19valves you are blasting are closed.
21:22Media passed an open valve goes into the
21:24cylinder. Shop work, not driveway work.
21:28Half a day of labor you are paying
21:29somebody else for, and four figures if
21:31you take the first number.
21:33I watched one car get a $1,500 quote and
21:36a $540 quote the same week. A blast sold
21:40with no picture is a sale, not a repair.
21:43See a pro and refuse it outright on an
21:45engine with no symptom. All right.
21:48Number 10, the one I have been holding.
21:51Number 10, the throttle body.
21:54This is the part in the circle, and this
21:56is the crust everybody has been showing
21:58you. Machined aluminum, about the size
22:00of a coffee mug, where the big air tube
22:03meets the engine.
22:04Inside the bore is a round disc on a
22:07shaft, the butterfly.
22:09It is the tap on everything your engine
22:11breathes. New, that bore is bright
22:14silver gray, and the edge of that disc
22:16is a clean line.
22:17This one is black and chunky, crusted
22:20front and back. At idle, that disc is
22:22nearly shut. The whole gap your engine
22:25idles on is a hair-thin crescent around
22:28the edge of it, thinner than a business
22:30card. A tar ring there takes a big share
22:33of a gap that was already almost
22:35nothing.
22:36That is your idle sagging at a stop,
22:39your near stall when the air
22:41conditioning kicks on.
22:43Engine cold, off, key out. Car on the
22:46ground, working from above.
22:49One,
22:50loosen the clamp and pull the intake
22:52tube off. On most cars, you never
22:55unbolted at all, which skips the gasket
22:58and the torque spec.
22:59Two,
23:00flashlight down the bore. A black ring
23:03around the plate edge is your answer.
23:06Three.
23:07Spray cleaner labeled for throttle
23:09bodies onto a lint-free rag. The rag,
23:12not the bore.
23:14Four. Small arcs, light pressure, both
23:18faces of the plate.
23:20Five. Tube back on, clamp tight,
23:23connector clicked home.
23:25Never carb cleaner, never brake cleaner.
23:28There is a coating in that bore they
23:30will strip right off. Never scrub it.
23:33Never flood the bore and let solvent run
23:35down the shaft into the sensor.
23:38And never force that plate open with
23:40your finger on a drive-by-wire throttle.
23:43Then the one everybody misses, the
23:45relearn.
23:47Your computer spent years learning to
23:49hold that plate further open to get
23:51around the carbon.
23:52Clean it, and that learned number is
23:54wrong.
23:55High idle, hunting, maybe a P0506.
24:01Not damage, expectation.
24:03Some cars need a bidirectional scan
24:06tool. Some want key cycles in a gentle
24:08drive. Find out which one yours is
24:11before you take anything apart.
24:1430 to 60 minutes your first time. A can
24:17of cleaner, single digits to low teens.
24:20A shop charges 80 to 150, a dealership
24:24150 to 300. And the thumbnail said every
24:286 months.
24:30I have never seen a 6-month cleaning in
24:32a factory schedule.
24:33Every 6 months you look. You clean when
24:36the look says clean. A rag, a can, and a
24:40flashlight. Not glamorous. Just the
24:43thing that means nobody ever hands you a
24:45four-figure ticket for a crust you could
24:47have wiped off in your own driveway.
24:50Let me be straight with you before you
24:51go.
24:52Some of these jobs really are worth
24:54paying for.
24:56A blast job done right by somebody with
24:58a borescope and a clean bench is worth
25:01every dollar of a fair quote.
25:04I am not telling you never to pay a
25:06shop. I am telling you to know which is
25:08which. Your car is not out to get you.
25:12It is not dying on a schedule somebody
25:14else set. It is an engine doing what an
25:17engine does. Breathing a little of its
25:19own oil mist because that is how we keep
25:22it out of the air you breathe.
25:24Nobody hid that. What got hidden was the
25:26price of a rag and a can behind a
25:29photograph of a crusted valve and a
25:31four-digit number.
25:33And now you can spot that from across
25:34the room.
25:36A shop lives on the repairs it talks you
25:38out of. That is 30 years of folks
25:41sending me their mothers and their
25:42daughters because I showed them the worn
25:44part before I charged a dime.
