0:00Professor Fello and I am teaching the
0:02psychology C1000 course you are enrolled
0:05in this fall semester.
0:08The C1000 course is the same as what
0:10used to be called psychology 300. It is
0:13an introduction to psychology course
0:15just a different number same course.
0:18The purpose of this video that I am
0:20recording for you is to help you to
0:24navigate the course site. Essentially to
0:27find what you need to find for
0:29assignments, for submitting graded work,
0:31and getting you started for the
0:33semester. So, let's go.
0:36When you find the Los Rios Canvas site,
0:39and so firstly, how do you find that? I
0:42sent an email to all enrolled students
0:44already. you have received that by the
0:46time this video is published. Please go
0:49to your Los Rios Gmail account and click
0:54on all mail and you will find an email
0:56from me with a link to the Canvas site.
1:00If you're not quite sure where to find
1:02your Los Rios Gmail account, do a Google
1:04search and type in Los Rios Gmail and it
1:07will take you to a login page for you to
1:10log in with your credentials and you
1:12will find the app for Los Rios Gmail.
1:15Also, if you want to go directly to the
1:17Los Rios Canvas site, just do a Google
1:20search for Los Rios Canvas and that will
1:23take you to a link to the Los Rios
1:25Canvas site. Again, you'll need to log
1:27in with your credentials.
1:29I strongly recommend that you bookmark
1:31the site.
1:38Okay, so assuming that you found the
1:40site, you're going to be looking for
1:42your courses that you're enrolled in
1:43this semester. So firstly, uh your page,
1:47your dashboard may or may not look like
1:48the page that's displayed in front of
1:50you. Depends upon the settings that
1:52you've chosen. You may have a list of
1:54links to courses or you may have cards
1:56like the ones that are shown on the page
1:58that you're looking at now on your
2:00screen.
2:01Whether it's text links or whether it is
2:04cards, find your psychology C1000 course
2:08with fretello fra
2:10l. Click on that and that will bring you
2:13to a page that looks something like the
2:15one in front of you. Now, this is the
2:17course homepage for the psychology C1000
2:20course I am teaching this semester.
2:23All right, let's take a look at how this
2:25page is organized because this is your
2:26page that you're going to be going to
2:28and starting from every time you work on
2:31the course. So over here on the left are
2:35links uh are links that you can use. One
2:38is to your account with Canvas through
2:40Los Rios. The next one is below that is
2:43dashboard. So again this is all the way
2:45on the far left. A vertical menu
2:49starting with account and then
2:51dashboard. the page we just left. A link
2:53to courses. These are all the courses
2:55that you are currently enrolled in. A
2:57link to calendar. Let me have your
2:59attention here for just mo one moment.
3:01Please do not use the calendar and do
3:04not rely on the calendar for my course.
3:07I will explain more later. Please take
3:09that seriously. All right. Below
3:11calendar is a link to the inbox which is
3:13the Canvas messaging service. I'm going
3:16to skip the next two and go to
3:17bookstore. bookstore is where uh you can
3:21click on to get to the ARC bookstore and
3:24then a link to help which is
3:26specifically canvas help. Now moving to
3:28the right there is another vertical
3:30menu.
3:31This one uh is specific to this course.
3:35So the first link is to the homepage
3:37which is the page that you're looking at
3:38right now. Below that is a link to
3:41discussions. Below that a link to the
3:43grade book. Below that a link to a name
3:45coach. This is to be used if you uh
3:48think that I need help with uh
3:50pronouncing your name. I do my best to
3:53pronounce names uh respectfully and
3:56properly. Uh but I am human. I may
3:58sometimes get it wrong. I mean, look at
4:00my name, Professor Fello. That gets
4:01wrong all the time. So, I understand,
4:03but I do put in the effort. And uh and
4:06so please uh use that if you would uh if
4:10you would like to give me some guidance
4:12on how to pronounce your name. also for
4:14your classmates as well. Below that is a
4:17link to the ARC library. Below that is a
4:19link to ARC tech help. And below that, a
4:23link to ARC tutoring. All right, let's
4:25go to the middle of the homepage. In the
4:28middle of the homepage, you see the name
4:30of the course. You see my name. You see
4:32a book with lots of butterflies and
4:34dragonflies coming out of it just
4:36because it's magical, I suppose. And
4:38below the magical book are links to the
4:42syllabus, the assignment schedule, a
4:45link to synchronous office hour times.
4:48It's once a week, and then a link to
4:50bonus points. Don't worry about those at
4:52this moment, but just know that these
4:54are here for when you need them.
4:57below the uh links to the syllabus and
5:00so on that I just went over. Still in
5:02the middle of the page, you have unit A,
5:05welcome to psychology, a link to the
5:07orientation and week one. Just to be
5:11very clear, the orientation is done
5:13during week one. And so you're going to
5:16be doing both. The orientation should
5:18only take you, I don't know, an hour,
5:19hour and a half, and the rest of the
5:21week you should be working on week one
5:23work. Okay? So uh and notice here that I
5:27have um the course organized by units
5:31and then below each unit are the week
5:33numbers for the entire semester. There
5:35are 16 weeks during this semester and
5:38below each unit name are the are the
5:42weeks and the topics that are going to
5:44be discussed under that unit. So for
5:46unit A, we only have one week. So week
5:49one is unit A week and during uh unit A
5:53you're going to be doing the orientation
5:54and week one work. So let's start by
5:57clicking on the orientation.
6:00I'm going to open that in a new tab.
6:03Oops, it's not letting me look at it
6:05because the semester hasn't started. So
6:07let me leave the student view and give
6:10you
6:12the view, the unofficial view. All
6:15right. So, uh, here, uh, we have again
6:18orientation to this course, so you know
6:20what page you're on. Welcome, and then
6:22we have a link to units A and B
6:24discussion board. I put that right up at
6:26the top because the unit discussion
6:28boards are for you to ask anything about
6:31the course. Do you have questions? Are
6:33you confused? Do you need some more
6:35guidance on what you should be doing and
6:37when? Click on the unit discussion board
6:41and this is where you can ask all of
6:43those kinds of questions. You're going
6:45to hit reply and then you're going to
6:48post your question about the course here
6:54and then click again reply below the
6:56text box and you can see that it has
6:59posted there. Okay. So, uh that's
7:02available 247.
7:05All students can help each other out on
7:07the unit discussion board. I will also
7:09be looking during the work week for
7:11posts that are left there. And then we
7:14have um essentially an overview of what
7:16the orientation is about, what you're
7:17expected to get out of the orientation.
7:19And then we have what are called core
7:20foundations. So the units are all going
7:23to be organized in this way. The the
7:26assignments for every week can be
7:27organized in this way. You're going to
7:29have learning outcomes, core
7:30foundations, and graded assignments. So
7:34for the core foundations for the
7:35orientation, you have a number of
7:37assignments to watch and read. I
7:40strongly suggest doing them in order.
7:42They are listed from top to bottom and
7:44the first one watch navigating the
7:46course course site video. You are doing
7:49that right now. So that one's done.
7:51Check. And then below that um it says to
7:54read the syllabus and the assignment
7:55schedule. Please read the entire
7:57syllabus. Please uh take the assignment
8:00schedule due dates. That's essentially a
8:02list of all due dates for the entire
8:04semester for all graded work. place
8:07those in your own calendar and set
8:10reminders. One of the things with
8:13regards to the Canvas calendar um is
8:15that it is very finicky and it isn't
8:18always clear uh to students when
8:21something is due and when there is a
8:24late period on the assignment schedule.
8:27It's very clear. So I want you to ignore
8:30that Canvas calendar and use your own
8:32calendar uh based on the assignment
8:35schedule that I provided for you. Okay.
8:38Also uh when you are done with all the
8:41watching and reading I have assigned for
8:44the uh for the orientation you're going
8:47to see below that graded assignments.
8:50There is an orientation quiz and then
8:53below that discussion um which is uh
8:56introductions and your study plan. This
8:58is your these two are your first graded
9:00assignments. Okay? So, make sure that
9:02you take your time, read instructions,
9:05ask questions as you have them. When you
9:08are finished and again, you should be
9:10finished in an hour or two at most. When
9:12you are finished with the orientation
9:14quiz and the discussion, you are to go
9:16on, click next to week one work. And
9:20then week one, again, look at the it's
9:22the same kind of organization. And
9:23here's a link to the discussion board,
9:25an overview, learning outcomes, core
9:27foundations, which is what you're going
9:29to be reading, watching, reviewing,
9:31okay? And then a graded assignment,
9:33which is a quiz. All right? And I'm not
9:36going to tell you all about the course
9:37policies and everything because that's
9:38all listed in the syllabus. So, please
9:41read the syllabus. Uh, please put in
9:43those due dates in your calendar from
9:45the assignment schedule and go ahead and
9:48get started with the course. One last
9:50thing, just again, if you somehow lose
9:52your way, let's say, you know, you're in
9:55week one now. Oh gosh, how do I get back
9:56to the orientation? You can always use
9:58these breadcrumbs up at the top. This
10:01first one here will always lead you back
10:02to the homepage.
10:05And then you can see you have a link to
10:06the orientation and again a separate
10:08link to week one. That should get you
