0:00One way that you can test your
0:02English understanding is
0:03by listening to an English joke
0:05and understanding the joke
0:07and hopefully laughing at it.
0:08If you can listen to a joke, if
0:10I tell you a joke, and if you
0:12understand what I'm saying, but
0:14you also laugh at the joke
0:16because you understand why it
0:18is funny, it would mean that
0:19your English level is very,
0:21very high.
0:22Your English understanding
0:23is very, very good.
0:25So in this English lesson, I
0:26will tell you two different
0:27jokes, and your job is to try
0:29and understand the joke, and
0:31then your job is hopefully to
0:32laugh at the joke because you
0:34understand it.
0:35Okay, here we go.
0:36Joke number one.
0:37My uncle told me this joke when
0:39I was really, really young,
0:40and I thought it was hilarious.
0:42For this joke, you have
0:43to imagine that there's been
0:45an accident on the highway,
0:47and there was a truck,
0:48and the truck had penguins in it.
0:50And all the penguins are safe.
0:52They didn't get hurt in
0:53the accident, but they're walking
0:55around on the highway, and there
0:57is a police officer there.
0:58And a man stops
1:00with a pickup truck.
1:01And the police officer says
1:02to the man, hey,
1:03could you do me a favor?
1:05Someone needs to take
1:06these penguins to the zoo.
1:08So the police officer and the man,
1:10they put all of the penguins
1:11into the back of the pickup
1:12truck, and the man leaves
1:14to bring them to the zoo.
1:15And the police officer stays
1:16and handles the rest
1:18of the accident and does
1:19whatever police officers do.
1:22Well, a week later, the police
1:23officer is driving on the same
1:25highway, and he sees the man in
1:27his pickup truck, and he still has
1:29all the penguins in the back.
1:31And so the police officer puts his
1:32lights on and his siren, and he
1:34pulls over the man in the pickup
1:36truck with all the penguins,
1:37and he says, what are you doing?
1:40I told you to take these
1:41penguins to the zoo.
1:42And the man says, I did
1:43take them to the zoo,
1:44and it was a lot of fun.
1:45Now I'm taking them
1:46to the amusement park.
1:49So hopefully you understand
1:51why that joke is funny.
1:52The joke is funny because, of
1:54course, the police officer wanted
1:57the man to bring the penguins
1:58to the zoo because that's where
2:00animals like that belong.
2:02Especially, he wasn't going
2:04to take them back to,
2:05Antarctica, of course.
2:07He was going to hopefully take
2:08them to the zoo and they
2:09could go back to wherever they're
2:11supposed to be at the zoo.
2:12So the joke is, the man took them
2:14to the zoo as if they were
2:16people, and they went to the zoo
2:17and had a good time, and now
2:18he's taking them to an amusement
2:20park, maybe to ride on the
2:22roller Coasters and to do other
2:24fun things.
2:25So hopefully you understood
2:27the joke as a story,
2:29and hopefully you also understood
2:32why the joke was funny.
2:33And here's a challenge for you.
2:35You should memorize that joke
2:37and you should tell it to
2:38someone else today if you go
2:39to, an English speaking, night
2:42class or have conversation
2:43practice or something like
2:44that, try to tell that joke to
2:46someone else.
2:47So the joke about penguins.
2:49So, this has nothing to do
2:51with this lesson, but you might
2:52have noticed that winter came
2:54early here in Ontario, Canada.
2:56It's only November 10th and we're
2:58already having a snowfall.
2:59In fact, last night, there was,
3:02a lot of snow came
3:03down and the power went out
3:05and it just felt strange.
3:06And I was hoping today would
3:08be a snow day, but it wasn't.
3:10So that would have been fun.
3:11But, no, no snow day today.
3:13But, a beautiful backdrop
3:14for a lesson about jokes.
3:16Let's find another spot to stand
3:18and I'll tell you another one.
3:20So this next joke is also
3:21a joke that my uncle told me
3:23when I was a kid. I had an uncle
3:25who, whenever he came over,
3:27he usually had a joke to tell.
3:29And some of them are not
3:30appropriate
3:30for an English lesson like this.
3:33But some of them were
3:34very, very funny.
3:34So here is the next joke.
3:37You need to imagine that there
3:38were two men who went fishing,
3:40and so they drove out to
3:41the lake and they rented a boat.
3:43They went to a place that had
3:45lots of boats to rent, and
3:46they rented a boat and they
3:48put their fishing rods and
3:49fishing tackle in the boat and
3:50they went out on the lake in
3:52order to fish.
3:54And they tried a couple spots.
3:55They tried one spot and they
3:56didn't catch anything.
3:57They went to another spot
3:59and they didn't catch anything.
4:00And then finally they
4:01found a little spot
4:02on the lake where they started
4:03catching lots of fish.
4:04And it was amazing.
4:05They were both super happy
4:07to be catching so many fish.
4:08They would cast the.
4:10They, would cast their fishing rod.
4:12Is that how you say it?
4:12They would cast and then they
4:14would reel in fish after fish.
4:16And so the one guy says
4:18to the other guy, he says,
4:19this spot is amazing.
4:20We should come back here next week,
4:22but let's put an X on the bottom
4:25of the boat so we know
4:26where this good fishing spot is.
4:28And his other friend says,
4:31don't be dumb.
4:31Putting an X on the bottom
4:33isn't going to work.
4:33What if we don't get the same boat?
4:36So this is an example
4:38of a joke where you're kind
4:40of making fun of people because
4:41they're not super smart.
4:43So it's not the greatest joke
4:44in the world, in my opinion.
4:46But obviously putting an X
4:48on the bottom of the boat
4:49is the first punchline.
4:50The punchline is the funny
4:52part of the joke.
4:53Because if you put an X
4:54on the bottom of a boat,
4:56it doesn't mean you're going
4:57to be on the same spot
4:58on the lake next time.
4:59And then, of course, the second
5:01punchline is when
5:02the guy says, don't be dumb.
5:04What if we don't get the same boat?
5:06So there's a joke
5:07about fishing for you.
5:08Hopefully you understood the joke,
5:10and hopefully you understood
5:12why the joke is funny.
5:13And hopefully you can tell this
5:14joke to someone else today.
5:17So I don't think I should finish
5:18this lesson without telling
5:19what's called a dad joke.
5:21A dad joke is a joke that's
5:23funny, but it's just funny.
5:25It's like you're not
5:26gonna laugh like crazy when
5:27you hear a dad joke.
5:29In fact, you might just
5:30groan a little bit.
5:31So here's a dad joke for you.
5:33What did one hat say
5:34to the other hat?
5:36The one hat said to the other hat.
5:38Wait here, I'm going on ahead.
5:40So the reason this joke is funny is
5:43because if two people were walking
5:45and one person was going to walk
5:46faster than the other, they might
5:48say, hey, I'm going on ahead.
5:49Like A, H, E, A, D, all one word.
5:52But if you split that into, A HEAD
5:55A HEAD, a hat goes on a head.
5:57So the one hat said
5:58to the other hat.
5:59I'm going on a head.
6:01So anyways, thank you so much
