0:03If you have a mobile phone, there is a high possibility

0:04that you, once at least to kill time,

0:07downloaded one of the most popular mobile games in the World: Geometry Dash.

0:10It's a little game that does not look much,

0:11it's visually modest and proposes you to do one thing:

0:14tap on your screen.

0:15Here, look, I'm tapping and my icon jumps,

0:18and then here I tap again, I dodge obstacles and then the next ones,

0:20and I arrive at the finish line which indicates the end of the level.

0:23And if you've ever played it you know that the game quickly increases in difficulty,

0:25and there's a good chance that you'll

0:27never actually get to the end

0:28In fact, I'm telling you, even if you have reached the end of the game,

0:31you have not reached the end of the game.

0:33Because if you thought that this was Geometry Dash,

0:37uh… no… No no no, it is…

0:41no.

0:41[Music]

1:02Is this starting to intrigue you?

1:03And remember that if it looks hard, for us

1:05who have never reached this level of difficulty,

1:07it is actually a hundred times more complicated than it looks.

1:09And believe me, I'm not exaggerating,

1:11that's hell.

1:13And if you think I'm going to explain in detail why

1:15the few levels I showed you are unspeakable horrors to complete,

1:18I'll first introduce you the sponsor of this video: Genshin Impact

1:21that you all know. A free-to-play action RPG developed by HoYoverse

1:24initially on mobile but now also on PC and PlayStation.

1:27Genshin Impact is an open-world RPG, complex and immersive made up of

1:31several different kingdoms with very diverse styles, inspired

1:33for a few of them by real places and which you will be able to explore

1:36to discover all their wealth.

1:37What is interesting here is Genshin Impact's combat system

1:40which offers you to play a character called Traveler

1:43while having the possibility of controlling up to four characters among

1:46more than 60 unlockable playable characters while progressing in the story.

1:49Each character has its unique look and abilities

1:51and the colossal number of combinations available to you will allow you

1:54to compose original and potentially very effective teams.

1:57And if I speak to you about Genshin Impact today it is that there is

1:59an exceptional opportunity which explains it.

2:01From the 1st to the 2nd of July, 2023,

2:03the Genshin Impact 2023 summer festival will take place, the very first festival organised

2:07for French Genshin Impact players in Paris.

2:09This festival is not only the possibility for Genshin players

2:11to meet in the same place

2:13but it is also a lot of different activities.

2:15You have games

2:16like puzzles or musical quizzes, Genshin Impact knowledge tests,

2:19you also have concerts or shows or even

2:21a large number of stalls where you can buy merch.

2:23You will have the opportunity to interact with cosplayers

2:26and will have access to setups on which

2:28you will be able to play on accounts with complete characters.

2:30If you feel like going to the festival,

2:31feel free to click on the link in the description.

2:33And if you want to discover Genshin Impact before that,

2:36you can also check the description, or you can use the QR Code

2:39that appears in front of you.

2:40Okay, well, we can go back to the beginning.

2:42Geometry Dash was created in 2013, launched on iOS

2:44and Android, and is now also available on PC

2:47and exploded in popularity very quickly.

2:48Most of us played it to kill time,

2:51finishing a few levels without going to the end of the game.

2:53The end of the game is currently, on the paid version,

2:5521 levels which last one or two minutes each.

2:57These levels are categorized by level difficulty: from "easy" to "demon",

3:01and take, for the hardest ones, for a casual player,

3:03a few hundred, or even a few thousand tries to complete.

3:05You can only do

3:06two things in Geometry Dash: tap quickly or hold,

3:09except the game actually proposes more complexity than that.

3:11There are several shapes for your icon

3:13that you activate by going through portals.

3:15In normal mode, you can tap once to jump, in "ship mode" for example,

3:18you keep pressing for the ship to gain height,

3:20and you release to make it fall. In "wave mode" you press

3:23or release to send your icon in a diagonal or another.

3:26In short, we have a few like that

3:27on top of which are added portals

3:29that can change anything and everything:

3:31portals that reverse gravity,

3:32portals that make you go back the other way, like a mirror,

3:35portals that split you, and force you to direct

3:38your two icons with the same pressure but on different surfaces,

3:40and obviously, because it wouldn't be fun otherwise,

3:42you can chain these portals and combine their effects.

3:45And you might understand a little better why the game is complicated,

3:48except you don't understand at all.

3:49If the game remained so popular after all these years,

3:51it's not just that it's accessible and entertaining,

3:53it's particularly that it provides a tool that will change everything:

3:56a level editor, which allows those

3:58who want to make their own levels.

4:00And that's where it all went crazy

4:01because some players got really good at Geometry Dash,

4:04more than good enough to finish the main game.

4:05Players quickly developed a desire to play more complicated levels,

4:08so they built their own ones.

4:10Well, we're not here to talk about the creativity of Geometry Dash players,

4:13not here to marvel at their ingenuity

4:15even if we can stop for a few seconds on this guy

4:17who created, on an editor that only allows the creation of 2D levels,

4:21a 3D level, or on this guy who created a system

4:24to reproduce a video with the game editor,

4:27but let's forget that, we will save this for another time. What we are going to talk about

4:29is what will happen within the demon difficulty.

4:31Players designing more and more complex levels over months

4:35will need to create

4:36a new difficulty scale within the demon difficulty:

4:38"Easy", "Medium", "Hard", "Insane" and finally "Extreme".

4:42It is this category that will interest us,

4:44the "extreme demons", because this is where

4:46the most terribly complex levels of Geometry Dash are found,

4:48carefully listed and classified in what is called the "demon list",

4:51the ranking of the hardest levels in the game.

4:52Here, forget the few hundred tries to complete a level,

4:55even the best players in the world know that they will have to invest

4:57several tens of thousands of attempts, hoping to complete one.

5:00Levels are so complex,

5:01so obnoxiously fast, that they no longer end

5:03by reacting to obstacles in front of those who try.

5:06Here we are falling into the realm of memorization,

5:08the best players will memorize the inputs necessary

5:10to complete one section,

5:11then another one, then another one,

5:13to assemble them and end up completing the level.

5:15I mean, look at this,

5:16I'm having a hard time even understanding what obstacles we're supposed to avoid.

5:19I don't even want to imagine the skill and the amount of effort

5:22it takes to be able to hope

5:24to only reach 10% of one of these levels, and you

5:26can find a whole list of those,

5:27and at the top of this list, there is a level called

5:30Silent Clubstep, and that...

5:33Well, I'm going to explain.

5:34We are in the middle of 2014, and Sailent,

5:36a Finnish Geometry Dash player

5:38decided to create a level that would not

5:39only be hard to complete, even very hard,

5:41he decided to create what is called an impossible level:

5:43a theoretically doable level but which seems so

5:46obnoxiously hard that it is considered as impossible.

5:48That's Silent Clubstep,

5:49and when it came out,

5:50verified with a hack by its creator without really being completed so that

5:53others could try it,

5:55the majority of the best players in the world were seized by a passion for this level,

5:58before being disgusted by it. Because the first person to get

6:00to 4% of the level, which is 4 seconds after the start, did so more than a year

6:05after the creation of the level.

6:06Alright, I think you're starting to get it.

6:08Okay, I'm going to introduce you the level.

6:09Here we are going to speak in percentages,

6:11when you are progressing in a level,

6:12you are not told the time you have spent there,

6:14you are told the percentage of the level

6:16at which you are, and the explanation of the first percent

6:18will give you an idea of what awaits us on the rest of the map.

6:20In Geometry Dash you regularly find what are called “spikes”,

6:23over which you have to jump.

6:25The hardest part, theoretically, in the main game, is a jump over 3 spikes.

6:28From the first percent of the level,

6:30Silent Clubstep asks you to jump over 4 spikes,

6:35okay.

6:35In fact, it is something that is allowed by the level editor.

6:38If you want to pile up spikes, you can do it,

6:40and what that means is that you can theoretically

6:42put four spikes side by side, and bring them slightly closer together

6:45to make the jump possible, barely possible,

6:48to be honest almost "frame perfect".

6:49Frame perfect for those who don't know

6:51it's very simple, when you play a game you run it

6:53at a certain number of frames, frames per second,

6:55what we call fps.

6:57The norm for a long time

6:58was 60 frames per second, so 60 fps. A jump that we call frame perfect

7:01is a jump that requires that if you divide a second into 60 equal parts,

7:04you click on the exact good part, the exact good frame,

7:07do you understand a little better?

7:08Keep in mind that in Silent Clubstep, almost frame perfect

7:12or frame perfect jumps, there are a lot of them, everywhere in fact.

7:15Well, the level lasts 1 minute 27, and I may not explain

7:18every second of gameplay to you, but you should know that if you've watched

7:21this first jump thinking that there was nothing complicated,

7:23you should maybe look at the rest of the level in a different way.

7:27Here, eveything is horrible.

7:28And in this endless succession

7:30of terrible sections, there are three parts that are particularly awful,

7:33the three key moments that drove anyone

7:35who tried to complete the level completely crazy.

7:37Number 1, 6%

7:38The neck.

7:39Here, we are dealing with a very common mechanic in Geometry Dash,

7:41which is called "Straight Flying".

7:43You are in ship mode, so you need to press to go up,

7:45and you release to go down,

7:46all in a very narrow corridor that requires you to click and release

7:49quickly, but not too much,

7:50being extremely consistent, with a room for maneuver more or less

7:52reduced depending on the sadism of the level's creator.

7:55It's hard enough as it is, except that here Sailent

7:57decided to put a “mirror portal” at the end,

7:59which forces you to do it the other way,

8:00and he added a "gravity portal" to reverse the direction of gravity.

8:04Oh and by the way it's not straight all the time, so it's Straight Flying...

8:07not straight.

8:08Oh, and to see where you're going when it's not straight

8:09good luck because it's dark.

8:12Well, that sounds hard, but not half as hard as it should be.

8:14When I'm watching there, even I have the impression that you have to tap quickly and precisely, okay,

8:18but the level of difficulty looks moderate,

8:20but you will quickly understand what it really is.

8:22Number 2, 62%

8:23With a “dual portal” which therefore splits you,

8:25with two icons that you control at the same time

8:27with the same pressures and here on different surfaces,

8:29except that there are in this section several almost frame perfect jumps.

8:33Oh and your icons don't move at normal speed, but at x3 speed.

8:36Number 3, 71%

8:38Here we come to what is cheerfully called

8:39the "eight jumps of hell". Literally "les huit sauts de l'enfer" in French.

8:42And you can imagine that if the prodigies who have been trying hard

8:44Geometry Dash for years have given this name to this section,

8:46it is really that there is something wrong.

8:48It's very simple, here almost all the jumps of

8:50the eight that you have to do are frame perfect,

8:52imagine already tapping once the good fraction of the 60 that make up a second,

8:56now imagine having to do it 8 times in a row.

8:58In fact, this part is so difficult that there is a documentary on YouTube

9:01explaining the efforts made by the players only to get through these eight jumps of hell.

9:05Oh and also keep in mind that for these players,

9:06this part is, believe it or not, less hard than the neck at 6%.

9:10Here, I'm telling you,

9:11we have the Holy Trinity of difficulty, peaks of arduousness surrounded

9:13by other extremely complicated sections.

9:16While I'm at it, I'm going to present you the last part of the map,

9:18the one that comes to conclude the hell that is this level, here is an invisible... labyrinth.

9:22In fact, to get out of it you have to jump or let yourself fall

9:24by memorizing a ten-digit pattern that mixes these two actions.

9:27For example at the beginning there, you have to jump four times, there you fall once, in short, you get it.

9:31And while the difficulty of this obstacle is nowhere near as awful

9:34as the three others I showed you earlier,

9:36the fact that it is the last one,

9:37at the very end, when you understand that there

9:40you can mark the history of the game and become the first

9:42to verify one of the hardest levels ever created on Geometry Dash

9:45and that you are not only asked

9:46to completely rely on your muscle memory,

9:48and to remember a pattern of numbers...

9:51Uh, yeah.

9:51Well, that's hell.

9:52That and all of that together, forms Silent Clubstep.

9:56The first real breakthrough on this level was made by a player named IcEDCave,

10:00a Canadian player who would later be known

10:01for creating one of the most complicated levels in the history of the game,

10:04but maybe I'll save that for another video.

10:06In short, IceEDCave is a guy who, not content with being able to create

10:08extremely complicated levels, is also able to complete very difficult levels,

10:12and who managed in November 2015 to reach 4% of the level.

10:16In May 2016, another player named Emirate managed to make it to 6%,

10:20do you realize how slow is this progress?

10:22It took 5 additional months for two small percent more.

10:26And I remind you that at 6%

10:27we have not yet faced any of the three key moments of the level.

10:29So, to help you understand better what will follow,

10:31I will present to you the three main methods

10:33that players use to progress on complicated levels.

10:35The first is to play normally

10:36and try to finish the level from start to finish.

10:38The second consists of using the "practice mode",

10:40a mode in which checkpoints are placed automatically

10:43and which allows you to respawn without going back to the start of the level.

10:45In short, using the practice mode

10:47and trying to finish the level with the fewest respawns possible.

10:50The third, finally,

10:51allows you to create copies of the level, and cut it in parts to train

10:54on specific sections by finishing, for example, a section from 10 to 12%,

10:57and as long as no one has verified the level, players must

10:59find a way to know who is the closest to finishing it.

11:02In the rankings, you'll find players who have managed to reach 4%,

11:05other players who have managed to finish the level in 900 attempts

11:07in practice mode, in short, different metrics,

11:10of which the level of difficulty can be judged by players, and therefore rankable.

11:13And after Emirate's insane 6% run,

11:15Sunix, the best player of the game at the time,

11:17managed to finish the level in practice mode in December 2016 after 495 attempts.

11:22Are you hearing what I'm saying?

11:24The best player of the game,

11:25after tens of thousands of attempts, more than two years

11:27after the level was created, has managed to finish it by reappearing 495 times,

11:31but who's supposed to succeed here then?

11:32At this point, understand that in all Geometry Dash players' minds,

11:35Silent Clubstep can't be verified.

11:38Okay, so now we’re in December 2016, and during 2017

11:41something unexpected happened...

11:44Nothing.

11:45Nothing happened,

11:46the level has been completely abandoned.

11:48For several reasons,

11:49First, the fact that Sunix struggled so much

11:50to finish the level in practice mode didn't seem to leave any hope for the other players,

11:53and secondly, in January and November 2017,

11:56two Geometry Dash updates were released: 2.1 and 2.11, both slightly modified

12:00the game and ended up destroying the level by making some timings almost impossible,

12:04and constantly increasing the difficulty of the map.

12:07So we’re waiting, and nothing happens.

12:09We are now in 2018, more than 3 years after the level was created,

12:12at this time the world record was still 6%.

12:15And then one day, a player called EarthRex posted this video.

12:22- 7%! - Oh my god! You actually did it!

12:27Just one small percent, one more than Emirate's record,

12:30that’s nothing,

12:31but on Silent Clubstep it's absolutely huge.

12:34First, because every percent is hell to get through,

12:35but particularly because this extra one percent came after more than 2 years

12:38without any progress, and that got everyone motivated again.

12:40Two days later, ERROR! uploaded a video of him reaching 7% too,

12:44announcing that he reached this stage in 20,000 attempts.

12:45Three months later, he made a run from 33% to 51%.

12:49Something very impressive,

12:50even if none of the three passages of death were in this section.

12:53And just one week later, he managed to break Sunix's record

12:56of 495 attempts, finishing the level in 483 attempts,

12:59what ERROR! was doing in 2018

13:01was showing everyone in the community that it was possible to progress.

13:04Players will mostly be trying hard the practice mode in 2019.

13:07(I couldn't find the videos, fake it, smile) PenguinLuigi_ will succeed in 438 attempts,

13:10(I couldn't find the videos, fake it, smile) pirillkoly in 301, and 11 days later, Atomic in 267.

13:13And later in 2019, level sections will become more important,

13:16with IcEDCave, the player I mentioned at the beginning, who had completed a 4% run,

13:20this time managing a huge segment from 71 to 100%, then from 24 to 51%.

13:24And listen, I know that the list of these accomplishments won't probably interest you that much,

13:27but if there's one thing to remember, it's that, for now,

13:30all the successful runs only included one of the three hardest sections:

13:33the eight jumps of hell.

13:34The biggest problem remained the nightmare that the first of these sections was, at 6%,

13:37which had a new significant problem.

13:39While it's in theory possible to get through the level at 60 fps,

13:42it becomes infeasible at higher frame rates.

13:44From the moment you enter the tunnel, above 60 fps,

13:48the game physics make you die no matter what,

13:49it's as simple as that.

13:50And that was not even the only problem with the level,

13:53which was definitely too broken for anyone

13:55to ever hope to finish it.

13:56At this stage, you could complete sections of the level,

13:58but finishing the whole thing was clearly impossible,

14:00that’s why Sailent, the creator of the level, and IcEDCave,

14:04the level's most advanced player at the time, decided to work together

14:06to solve all the problems.

14:08Sailent wanted his level to be terribly hard but theoretically finishable,

14:11which didn’t seem to be the case anymore.

14:12Together in 2020, they released together a list of fixes

14:14that would make the map humanly doable,

14:16they fixed the framerate issues,

14:18and also the problems that came with the newer versions of Geometry Dash.

14:20And remember, the goal was not to make the level easier,

14:23but simply possible, while keeping

14:24the original purpose of the level at its creation:

14:27to be a pain.

14:28And that was the start of a new era of Silent Clubstep, with the apparition

14:31of a new rivalry between IcEDCave, who's been there from the start,

14:33and SeptaGon7, an American player known for his love of unusual levels.

14:37In 2020, everything changed.

14:39[Music]

15:01On June 18th, 2020, SeptaGon7 concluded this war

15:03by doing something absolutely unprecedented:

15:06he completed a 48-98% section, in other words, he completed half the level,

15:10which is clearly exceptional.

15:12And he followed this up a few days later with a 9% run,

15:14meaning he had almost completed the Straight Flying.

15:17At that moment, SeptaGon7 had 4 of the top 5 records,

15:19IcEDCave was insanely good,

15:21but this back-and-forth between the two

15:22seemed to be at SeptaGon7's advantage,

15:24and you will see that for Silent Clubstep

15:25the progress story is always going to be made from rivalries

15:28between two players, with the unexpected arrival of a new challenger,

15:31and that's what's going to happen here too.

15:34[Music]

15:4411%.

15:44Hyperbola, an American player, made it through the 6% neck

15:47for the first time in the history of the level.

15:49And after making it once from 5 to 11%, he did it a second time

15:52from 0 to 11%, and for Hyperbola this was only the beginning...

15:59"I did the run."

16:01"1, 2, 3, 4, 5... First in the world? 48 to 100%."

16:18"Oh! I did 24 to 100%!"

16:20Just like SeptaGon7 dominated the leaderboard a few months earlier,

16:23Hyperbola had 5 of the 6 Silent Clubstep records.

16:25In fact, it was even more than dominating the leaderboard, with his latest record

16:28on January 13th, 2021, from 24 to 100%, completing 76% of the level in one run,

16:32going through 2 of the 3 hardest sections, Hyperbola finished the level in 3 runs,

16:36From 0 to 11%, 9 to 25%, 24 to 100%.

16:39It can be done.

16:40The 100% run is doable,

16:41it's awfully complicated because you have to remember

16:43that every session Hyperbola finished was an achievement in itself,

16:46and that putting all these sections together in a single run

16:48is almost impossible, almost.

16:51And in the same way Hyperbola came to defeat SeptaGon7,

16:53someone called Vision will come to push Hyperbola to the limit,

16:57in a battle that will last several months, from January to August 2021,

17:00that battle will see an insane amount of tries:

17:02180,000 for Vision and 200,000 for Hyperbola,

17:06resulting in a 15% run from Hyperbola.

17:08And few days later, with a 16% run from Vision,

17:10who only had one record in the top 5,

17:12the very first one, and now the best Silent Clubstep player, it's him.

17:16Except that, where progress has been made over the last few years percent by percent,

17:19after tens or even hundreds of thousands of attempts,

17:21where rivalries have been decided over details from the beginning,

17:24where players have been fighting by grinding meter by meter,

17:26after all that, just a few hours

17:28after Vision's 16% record, a new record has been set.

17:36"I don't know..."

17:51"I got to the drop, not f*cking kidding, I just got to the drop."

17:55"Oh my god!"

17:5625%.

17:57And the person who just did that only had 11,000 tries on the map,

18:01accumulated in just 5 days, which means 170,000 fewer tries than Vision.

18:05Here, we had an enormous talent who seemed to be announcing to the world

18:08that if one player should succeed in validating Silent Clubstep it would be her,

18:11here’s Paqoe, a transgender player who had just made history,

18:14and who was about to... disappear.

18:16No more progress, no more news.

18:18The one who seemed to be able to bring this story to an end was simply... gone,

18:21so Vision, the player who was supposed to start a new rivalry

18:23with Paqoe ended up being alone at this level of play,

18:25and he kept on pushing the boundaries of Silent Clubstep even further.

18:27In December 2021, he made a 27% run,

18:30surpassing Paqoe and becoming the first person

18:32to have a full run with only two connected sections.

18:34Later, as he was reaching 250,000 attempts, he made a 31% run,

18:38and in February 2022, after almost 400,000 attempts, he managed to climb from 0 to 65%.

18:43Vision was closer than anyone else

18:45to completing the level, and other Geometry Dash players

18:47were only waiting for the announcement of his success in the coming months.

18:49Except that, just as she arrived and left without notice a few months ago,

18:53Paqoe came back and completed a 0 to 65% run, beating Vision's record by 0.09%.

18:58Everyone had the feeling that, at that point, despite the massive complexity of the level,

19:01one of the two players: either Paqoe, who is exceptionally talented,

19:04or Vision, who is of course also immensely talented

19:06but mostly determined like no other,

19:08one of those two players will succeed where all the others have failed.

19:11This is the last battle, the last rivalry, the last dance in the history of Silent Clubstep.

19:46"9 to 100%!"

19:48"What the hell?"

19:52"Okay!"

19:53As time passes, even though I know that this video lasts

19:56just over 20 minutes, you need to understand,

19:58try to project yourself,

19:59you need to understand that here, we're going over weeks

20:02and then endless months of unsuccessful attempts

20:04and that thousands and then tens and hundreds of thousands of attempts are being played.

20:08Paqoe and Vision gave everything they had, played for days, evenings

20:11and nights, hoping to complete this level.

20:14They were both feeling that its completion was just there,

20:16around the corner, and yet Silent Clubstep,

20:18a little piece of level that barely lasts more than a minute,

20:21will ask them to play more, to try harder,

20:24to pile up attempts to such an absurd level that maybe,

20:27one day, one of them will be lucky enough to live that moment,

20:31that one little moment when one obstacle follows another,

20:33each of them having made

20:35several tens of thousands of attempts,

20:37that one little moment, lost in time, during which one miracles would follow other ones,

20:42and then, on July 17h, 2022, while on a Discord call with friends,

20:46Paqoe made that run.

22:24"I verified it!"

22:26- "Oh my god!" - "What?"

22:29"From zero?"

22:30- "Yeah! Wait... " - "Oh my god!"

22:34- "Okay... What the hell?" - "Holy sh*t..."

22:39"What, what?"

22:45"Oh my god I verified it! I verified Silent Clubstep!"

22:59Here we are, 7 whole years after the release of the level,

23:027 years of arduous progress, fierce rivalries,

23:05percents painfully acquired by the strength

23:07of the determination of the few players

23:09who tried their best at validating the level, out of nowhere it's Paqoe,

23:12with just 138,000 attempts, who's completed the verification of Silent Clubstep.

23:16Today, for those who are curious,

23:17the level is ranked third on Geometry Dash's demon list,

23:20understand that everything we've just experienced

23:22happened on a level that isn't even the hardest one in the game.

23:24Understand also that new levels are currently being made,

23:26built by players who, looking for greater difficulty,

23:28aren't afraid of having obstacles thrown at them

23:31that will always get into the heads of those who will try to pass them,

23:33resulting in a temporary feeling of weakness

23:35facing the obvious unfeasability of the level in front of them,

23:38and above all, cause a desire to silence the voices whispering

23:41at their ears that they can’t make it, the desire to try.

23:45And know that I'll be there to tell you everything about it.

23:47Thanks to Seraphys, a French Geometry Dash player

23:49who has completed a few levels on this demon list.

23:51He has a little YouTube channel where he posts his own records,

23:54so go check it out.
