0:00these are extraordinary times and we
0:02face
0:03an extraordinary challenge our strength
0:06as well as our convictions
0:08have imposed upon this nation the role
0:11of leader
0:13in freedom's cause finally if we are to
0:16win the battle
0:17that is now going on around the world
0:20between freedom
0:21and tyranny the dramatic achievements in
0:25space which occurred in recent weeks
0:27should have made clear to us all as did
0:30the sputnik in 1957
0:33the impact of this adventure
0:36on the minds of men everywhere who are
0:39attempting to make a determination
0:41of which road they should take since
0:44early
0:45in my term our efforts in space
0:48have been under review with the advice
0:50of the vice president
0:52who is chairman of the national space
0:54council we have examined where we are
0:56strong and where we are not
0:58where we may succeed and where we may
1:00not
1:01now it is time to take longer strides
1:05time for a great new american enterprise
1:08time for this nation to take a clearly
1:10leading role
1:12in space achievement which in many ways
1:15may hold the key to our future on earth
1:18i therefore ask the congress above and
1:21beyond the increases i have earlier
1:23requested for space activities
1:25to provide the funds which are needed to
1:27meet the following national goals
1:29first i believe that this nation should
1:31commit itself
1:32to achieving the goal before this decade
1:35is out
1:36of landing a man on the moon and
1:38returning him safely to the earth
1:41no single space project in this period
1:44will be more impressive to mankind
1:46or more important for the long-range
1:48exploration of space
1:50and none will be so difficult or
1:52expensive to accomplish
