Intro

0:00hey everyone welcome back to my channel

0:02my name is Shier and in today's video

0:04I'm going to be walking you through a

0:06case study presentation I did to land a

0:09job as a senior product designer now for

0:11this particular case study presentation

0:13the instruction that I got from the

0:15recruited was to focus on process so the

0:18team really wanted to see what my design

0:21process was like as well as how I

0:23collaborated with other team members and

0:25just really understand how I approached

0:27design related problems so in this case

0:30study you're going to see a lot of

0:32detail on the process on this very

0:34step-by-step and granular level now this

0:38presentation and interview process was

0:40roughly 2 years ago so 100% if I were to

0:44do this again there's probably a couple

0:45of things that I would do differently or

0:47better just based off of the fact that I

0:49have a bit more experience and I've

0:51gotten better as a designer Over time

0:54however there is still a lot of really

0:56vital and valuable things that I think

0:58most designers can still apply in any of

1:01their upcoming interviews or case study

1:04presentations so without wasting any

1:06more time let's get into today's

1:09[Music]

1:13video so first thing that we have is

Chapter 1: Cover Page and Introduction

1:15basically just the cover page right so

1:18on this page of course you can be much

1:20more creative than this and show a lot

1:22more detail or whatever as you like for

1:24me I just wanted to you know just

1:26introduce basically starting with like

1:28my name my current role at the company

1:30that I was working at so yeah just very

1:32I kept it very basic and very simple so

1:35I wanted to kind of break it down into

1:36chapters now originally this was this

1:39presentation had two projects in it but

1:41for the purpose of this video I just

1:43shortened it to one project so I wanted

1:46to get into about me and talk a little

1:48bit more about myself so then I have

1:51like a picture you should always try to

1:53use a picture that you like at the time

1:55I really like this picture and I still

1:56use it a lot and I just did a quick

1:59intro about my myself where I currently

2:01work my background which is mostly

2:03graphic design and print design and how

2:05I transitioned you know to frontend

2:07development and from their ux design and

2:10I also gave a little bit of personal

2:11information about like hobbies and

2:13things that I was into at the time and

2:15one thing I'll say about this is that

2:17this is your when you're still doing

2:18this introduction is a time for you to

2:20do you know some quick bonding almost

2:23with the people that you're talking to

2:24so you want to form some sort of

2:26relationship with them maybe make some

2:28jokes and also very strategic about it

2:31so if there are specific things that you

2:32think are part of your experience that

2:36could make you stand out or stand a

2:37better chance I would say this is the

2:39best time to to mention it so if you

2:41have experienced in something that your

2:43interviewers probably currently work

2:45with this is a good time to mention that

2:47so the next part of my introduction was

Highlighting Experience

2:50just highlighting my experience so this

2:53was not like all of my experience but it

2:55was my most recent experience so working

2:58in the past like three companies after

Highlighting Skills

3:00that I wanted to highlight some of my

3:02skills and things that I felt like I was

3:04adep in or things that I knew a lot

3:06about so this is something that I think

3:08is really really really helpful

3:10especially if you have specific tools

3:13and skills that you want to highlight it

3:14really helps to focus on this so I also

Design Process

3:17went into a quick overview about my

3:20design process this is something I

3:22actually learned also here on YouTube

3:24from fellow designer I believe her name

3:26is f and picked this from one of her

3:28YouTube videos it was very helpful so I

3:30just spoke a little bit about how you

3:32know I like to go into a little bit of

3:34research defining the problem user

3:36Journey mapping exploring designs as

3:39well as usability testing and then

3:41handoff and monitoring which is all very

3:43important in working with design teams

3:45so then from there I wanted to do like a

Chapter 2: Let's Talk Projects

3:47you know let's get talking about you

3:48know projects so like I mentioned there

3:50were originally two in this presentation

3:52but for this I worked uh I would just be

3:54showing one of those projects and this

3:56was the project that I wanted to focus

3:58on it was for a brand called replate um

4:00at the company I was working with at the

4:02time and it was the Loyalty challenge so

4:04I first of all started also by giving a

4:06quick intro into the brand what it does

4:09just to make people really understand

4:11like you know everything the the

4:13business was about and create that

4:15background understanding of the problem

4:17I went into it a little bit deeper gave

4:19a little bit more context because some

4:21people are not familiar with this so

4:24it's also very helpful to just give that

4:26added context that gives people some

4:27more knowledge about what you're talking

4:29about then then I went into explaining

4:31more about like the problem right so our

4:33customers what were they saying I wanted

4:36to help them to understand that you know

4:38there were surveys and there was

4:39feedback that we were getting and

4:41gradually you know highlight some of the

4:43the issues that we were seeing so we

4:44were seeing things like I don't see the

4:46point of you know meal kits for context

4:48if you didn't already follow every plate

4:50is a meal kit planning service so under

4:53the hell fresh group and so we were

4:54seeing people saying things like I don't

4:56understand the value I don't feel

4:58rewarded for my loyalty so for people

5:00that have ordered frequently or have

5:02ordered a lot and then people of course

5:04asking how they can get access to like

5:06more discounts and basically rewards for

5:08their loyalty and then I from there

5:10moved on to explaining about the how

5:12might we statements that we crafted

5:15based off of some of the problems or

5:18issues that our customers were raising

5:19frequently and I first started with you

5:22know the first one talking about like

5:23how can we give customers something to

5:25look forward to ensure our customers

5:27stay long enough to understand the value

5:29keep our customers motivated and engaged

5:31on the platform and also reward your

5:34customers consistently so I think

5:36something I was really trying to do was

5:37to like progressively reveal information

5:40so that it wasn't not just everything at

5:42the same time which can be pretty

5:43overwhelming when you're going through a

5:45presentation I went into talking about

5:47defining the projects right so the

5:49business team and the product team we

5:51you know had several meetings touch

5:53points of course pioneered by Design and

5:55research it's also really helpful to

5:57highlight what specific things you did

5:59did so I tried to you know say that okay

6:02yes I worked with the team but you know

6:03there were certain things that I also

6:05LED as well so we decided to create a

6:07loyalty challenge for every play to

6:09address some of the issues that we had

6:11previously gone through right then I

6:12went into details about the project and

6:15the Loyalty Challenge and how

6:16specifically it was supposed to work so

6:18it was for a duration of about 12 weeks

6:20eight boxes or meal orders and three

6:24rewards throughout the duration of the

6:2612 weeks and the eight orders and it's

6:28really important to to highlight what

6:30your goals and focus areas are and so

6:33that's what that was the next thing that

6:35I wanted to do and so I started off by

6:37defining like what our primary goals

6:38were you can also use this to include

6:41maybe your metrics or kpis so at this

6:43point I was talking about like improving

6:45customer engagement and motivating

6:47loyalty you know through the use of

6:49incentives also really important for you

6:51to highlight constraints and limitations

6:54if they are because most teams are

6:56always going to have some level of

6:57constraints and limitations and they

6:59want want to see how you work as a

7:01designer with knowledge of that and how

7:03you maneuver that so the first

7:05constraint at the time was that yes

7:07there were three rewards but technically

7:09it was just one and so we had to repeat

7:12that reward three times and so I walked

7:14them through that process and how it was

7:16and why it was that way it was mostly on

7:18the technical side and also being aware

7:21of scalability because like I mentioned

7:23it's one of Hof Fresh's Brands and

7:25hellofresh does have other brands

7:26underneath it which we might have had to

7:29duplicate that feature across different

7:31brands and then did a quick intro about

7:34the team I spoke about you know the role

7:36of the product owner the copywriter the

7:38researcher as well as the engineering

7:40manager who was managing a team of

7:42Engineers that were working with us on

7:44this project and then of course myself

7:47and then I wanted to also talk about the

7:49research aspect cuz we started off with

7:51doing a bit more research to get more

7:53real context on the issue so I want

7:56didn't want to just phrase it like step

7:58two research there's no nothing wrong

8:00with that but I wanted it to sound a bit

8:01more human and you know to explain that

8:04we were trying to understand so that's

8:05why I phrased it like empathizing

8:07through research so I explained a little

8:10bit about why we were doing these

8:12interviews the methodology at the time

8:15it was also around covid so it was we

8:17spoke to about 10 active users as well

8:20via zoom and we had primary research

8:23questions that we were trying to answer

8:25so we wanted to understand what type of

8:28rewards and loyalties or membership you

8:31know what would be a good enough

8:32incentive we wanted to understand like

8:34if they had preferences about how it

8:36would work we also wanted to understand

8:38what would motivate them to be a part of

8:40the program and what would Delight them

8:42during the experience so from there

8:45quickly moving into key results from the

8:48research and the takeaways and that's

8:50something you always want to make sure

8:52is very clearly highlighted is what did

8:54you learn research is only as good as

8:55what you uh take away from it I

8:57highlighted that of course we were able

8:59to validate a hypothesis which is that

9:01people are interested in the program

9:03were also able to understand that people

9:06wanted brand specific Awards but also

9:09would have appreciated like food and you

9:12know stuff like that as it was a food

9:13brand so we also were able to validate

9:15that you know it would make people more

9:18likely and more likely to stay and

9:20increase engagement which is what we

9:22suspected and it might reduce the the

9:25chances of people looking for something

9:26alternatively so people are thinking hm

9:29if if I order a couple more boxes then I

9:32can stay with them a couple more weeks

9:34and get this reward at the end of it you

9:36know so really take the time to explain

9:38to whoever it is you're talking about

9:40give as much context or whoever it is

9:42you're talking to give as much context

9:44and information so that they can really

9:45visualize and understand on a

9:47step-by-step basis what the project was

9:50about and if there was research what did

9:53the research tell you and also lastly we

9:56learned that uh participants were

9:58interested but were concerned about

9:59anything that might you know make them

10:01spend a longer amount of time that they

10:03were willing to so then from there I

10:05wanted us to get into our approach and

10:08our strategy and you know how did we go

10:10from this research you know into

10:12actually defining the entire scope of

10:14everything so there was a team workshop

10:17led by one of my colleagues at the time

10:20who I collaborated with and so at this

10:22point I spoke a little bit about the

10:24workshop and what was done the customer

10:26Journey talking about the different

10:28phases of the Challenge and what the

10:30overall experience would be like and

10:32then from there we were able to set

10:34certain requirements based on the

10:36uniqueness of this project so you know

10:38we were talking about we have to ensure

10:41you know multiple entry points we wanted

10:43to also take into account the

10:45constraints that I had mentioned early

10:47you know to conceal the rewards because

10:49they were three and they were all the

10:50same and so we wanted to build a sense

10:52of anticipation and not spoil it cuz

10:54some people might feel oh if there's

10:55three rewards and I already know that

10:58they're exactly the same thing it might

10:59get born so we wanted to kind of conceal

11:01it to create a higher level of

11:03anticipation because some people might

11:05look at the rewards and be like eh it's

11:06not worth it and Skip then we also

11:08wanted to ensure that it was clear that

11:10you could see what rewards you had not

11:12yet claimed and be able to easily take

11:14action so getting started with the

Getting Started with the Design

11:16design so of course I also spoke about

11:19you know the process of like low

11:20Fidelity designs and creating basic

11:23flows and using that to get feedback you

11:26know I think it's also really important

11:28for designers based on my experience to

11:30highlight that they're getting feedback

11:32at early stages because a lot of people

11:35have this issue where you wait till

11:39something's like very mature before you

11:41start getting feedback that's something

11:42I also have struggled with in the past

11:44and so it's important to highlight that

11:46you're getting feedback at every stage

11:48and carrying everyone along so I also

11:50got to talk a little bit more about the

11:53High Fidelity designs right I can't

11:55remember if I showed them around the

11:57figma file or not but in some cases

11:59that's not really a bad idea it depends

12:01on the the focus area you know but I

12:04talk them through the different states

12:07the achievements how we were trying to

12:08portray that visually and all of that so

12:11then I wanted to show them a bit more

12:13zoomed in the design and so I was

12:15talking to them about the onboarding and

12:18what that experience was like the

12:20progress Banner the specific

12:21achievements page and then I had also

12:23done like this animation which would

12:25show anytime you like accepted a reward

12:28so it would like open up and like show

12:30these sparkly things which is just an

12:31opportunity for us to create some

12:33Delight some fun so after this we went

Prototypes for Feedback and Usability Testing

12:36into discussing creating prototypes uh

12:39for feedback as well as for some

12:42usability testing and it's another thing

12:44to highlight if you worked with someone

12:46or have led usability testing efforts

12:48this is something that you always want

12:50to to highlight so I showed I embedded a

12:53gift by the way uh this is a platform

12:56called pitch pitch.com but I do believe

12:58other plat forms you could use figma you

13:00could use canva they do support

13:03integrating gifts so I I had a gift

13:05which kind of showed them what the first

13:08time user EMB voiding was like so the

13:11flow for people who had just been gotten

13:13into this loyalty challenge right so uh

13:17I walked them through that flow and it

13:19was just looping on its own so all I had

13:21to do was just explain as it goes human

13:23beings are very visual so it helps to

13:26really highlight the visuals not just by

13:29talking about it or showing screenshots

13:30but if you can embed a video it's very

13:32helpful there was another later stages

13:35of the Loyalty challenge so I also

13:37wanted to highlight that and make it

13:40very clear that this was a further stage

13:42and what that experience looked like as

13:45a user would progress through the

13:47Loyalty challenge then I also

13:48highlighted the web touch points because

13:51while this was focused on the mobile app

13:53experience there were also some web

13:55aspects to it because this was also

13:58supposed to drive app adoption because

14:00it was going to live primarily you know

14:02in the mobile application so that was

14:03something that I mentioned actually

14:05earlier uh but and because this is a

14:08video a couple of years later I might

14:10have forgotten to mention that at the

14:12beginning so after that I wanted to also

Usability Testing Results and Feedback

14:14talk about the usability testing so I

14:16went into a bit more detail about what

14:18exactly was done how it went so I spoke

14:21a little bit more about like the

14:23specific questions we were trying to to

14:25ask and the methodology as well as

14:28highlighting the the specific

14:30recommendations that we got so from

14:32there we were able to get like some

14:34feedback and so we made some iterations

14:37based off the feedback that we got from

14:39the usability testing and then I wrapped

Results and Impact

14:42it up with uh highlighting the results

14:44and the impact which uh for the most

14:47part you should always try to have the

14:48numbers specific numbers so this

14:50initiative actually did improve net

14:53revenue order rate as well as app

14:56adoption by 2.5% 2 .6% and 14%

15:01respectively so I think overall a couple

15:04of things it's very important to

15:05remember when doing these case study

15:07presentations is to make use of your

15:10visual slides ensure you're carrying

15:13people Along on a visual Journey let

15:17people know what your thought process

15:19was at each point and very important to

15:22let people know what you were

15:23specifically in charge of and also let

15:26people know the points it's very easy to

15:28go through presentation and just be

15:30saying a lot of we did this and we did

15:32that it's really important to say I did

15:35this and I led this and I L that and

15:38just to reiterate on the first point

15:39about you know the visuals is if you can

15:41embed gifts some sort of indicators that

15:45show exactly what you did it's very

15:47helpful also try to ensure that you are

15:50consistent with like your usage of fonts

15:53your usage of colors and your usage of

15:57design principles and also don't shy

15:59away from talking a little bit about

16:01yourself and showing some personality in

16:06your introduction stage and while you're

16:09walking them through it they don't

16:11expect you to have a perfect design

16:13process because when you go through with

16:15the very perfect process and all of that

16:18it kind of shows that you your

16:21expectation from them if they were to

16:23hire you might not be as realistic so

16:25feel free to explain certain rough

16:27patches or

16:29obstacles that you faced in the process

16:31of your project and of course give some

16:34context as to how you were able to

16:36overcome it and how you're able to get

16:38past it of course I ended the

Conclusion of Presentation to Interviewers

16:41presentation with a thank you and

16:43appreciated everyone's time and this is

16:45the part where you're open up for

16:47questions so feel free to jump back into

16:51different pages and explain a little bit

16:53more what you did give a bit more

16:56context yeah speak with confidence as

16:59well because it's your work you know

17:02what you did and nobody's going to ask

17:04you anything that you didn't do so speak

17:07with as much confidence and be sure of

17:09yourself and show a bit of character so

The End

17:11guys I hope today's video was helpful if

17:15it was please do not forget to support

17:16me by liking sharing of course

17:18commenting and subscribing to my channel

17:21thank you so much and see you next time
