What is embedded systems?
0:00hey everyone it's oliver today i'm going
0:02to be talking about embedded systems
0:04engineering i'll go over what it is what
0:06embedded systems engineers do at their
0:08jobs and what degrees can lead to
0:10becoming an embedded systems engineer so
0:13let's kick it off by trying to
0:15understand what embedded systems are to
0:17those without an engineering background
0:19this name might sound a little fancy or
0:21complicated but really embedded systems
0:24are all around us in the context of
0:26engineering an embedded system is really
0:28just a combination of hardware and
0:31software designed for a specific purpose
0:33anything from your calculator to a
0:35microwave to a digital camera will have
0:38an embedded system in it hence the word
0:40embedded an embedded system is
0:42essentially a computer system that has a
0:44dedicated function within a larger
0:46mechanical or electronic system most

0:49embedded systems today are made on a
0:51variety of microprocessors or
0:53microcomputers these can be programmable
0:55or they can be for a single purpose and
0:57they look a little bit something like
1:00like this or this
1:02or this or this there's tons they're
1:05everywhere rather than being
1:06multi-purpose like a laptop or your
1:09desktop computer an embedded system
1:10usually serves a more focused smaller
1:13purpose which means it can be easier and
1:16cheaper to manufacture as well as mass
1:18produce but obviously it takes somebody
1:21with a specific skill set to be able to
1:23program or develop a microcontroller or
1:26computer and this is where a variety of
1:29different engineers come in the most
Engineering disciplines
1:31common engineers who work on an embedded
1:33system are computer engineers or
1:35mechatronics engineers in these
1:37disciplines you gain a background of
1:39both hardware and software systems and
1:41understand how computers work with this
1:43skill set they are ideally equipped to
1:46develop embedded systems for a variety
1:48of purposes other engineers who you
1:50might see working on embedded systems
1:52are software engineers who would try to
1:54optimize the code to make it run as
1:56efficiently as possible or you might see
1:59electrical engineers or even engineering
2:01scientists who are testing out the
2:03electronics making sure there's no
2:05interference between electronic
2:06components all of these different fields
2:08of engineering might find themselves
2:10involved in embedded systems in one way
2:12or another at some point in their career
2:14practically every single thing that we

2:16use nowadays aside from your desktop and
2:19laptop will have some type of computer
2:21in it and that's where a lot of these
2:23embedded systems are and every year with
2:25the advances in technology things like
2:27shrinking the sizes of transistors so
2:29that you get more processing power per
2:32the same space microcomputers have
2:34become very powerful and they can run
2:36some pretty complex algorithms but with
2:38this complexity you also need the people
2:40who are able to understand it this
2:42complex new way embedded systems
Companies
2:44engineers can work for many companies
2:46but some popular ones are companies like
2:48intel shielinx amd nvidia and some of
2:51the other big tech companies like apple
2:53microsoft and google
2:56since they all kind of have their own
2:57hardware and software systems and they
2:59have to find ways to integrate those
3:01things you could also work for smaller
3:03more local companies to develop embedded
3:05systems for managing traffic transit or
3:08managing a business warehousing system
3:10you also could work for a company that
3:12develops drones or security cameras or a
3:14variety of other systems related to that
3:17there's pretty much limitless
3:18possibilities as an embedded systems
3:21engineer and it's really up to you to
3:23find the thing that you're truly
3:24interested in and try to pursue the
3:26knowledge you need in order to work in
3:28that field but generally to work in

3:30embedded systems you need to have not
3:32only a good understanding of how
3:34computer hardware works along with how
3:37software works along with how circuitry
3:39works and many other things but you also
3:42have to understand how all those things
3:44work together and once you can do that
3:46you can proudly call yourself an
3:48embedded systems engineer and i know
3:49that there's going to be some people out
Salary
3:51there who want to know how much an
3:52embedded system engineer gets paid and
3:54this varies depending on where you live
3:57as well as which company you're working
3:59for but generally you can expect to
4:01start somewhere between sixty and a
4:03hundred thousand dollars i know it's a
4:04pretty big range but sometime after two
4:07to five years you can easily be making
4:10over a hundred thousand dollars
4:12sometimes a whole lot more the best
4:14thing you can do for yourself if you
Learning embedded systems
4:15really want to work on embedded systems
4:17is to try tinkering with them yourselves
4:19learning about programming as well as
4:21circuits and computers and then putting
4:24all those things together to create fun
4:25projects to showcase to the world so you
4:28can do that through a youtube channel
4:29through your linkedin page or any other
4:31avenue that you see fit and really show
4:33people that you know how embedded
4:35systems work if you want any more
